Great vegan pub food served by friendly staff
14 Sep 2015
I had been to Arcadia previously for drinks, but hadn't had a chance to try the food until recently. I'm really glad that I did! Arcadia has a small but varied menu of pub classics and some surprising vegan twists on traditionally meat-filled dishes. I had the Guy Fawkes Burger, and my partner had the chicken and waffles. The burger was fantastic, and I say that as someone who eats a LOT of veggie burgers. Homemade mayo and coconut bacon from Edmonton's own Sailin' On food truck complete this tasty, hearty burger, which is served with a nice vinegar-dressed coleslaw. The chicken and waffles were also delicious, strips of breaded and fried tofu made for a great chicken substitute. For drinks they have many local choices on tap, my favorite being Yellowhead. I would highly recommend Arcadia.

Incredible vegan food
22 Jun 2016
I visited Victoria in June for a little vacation, and be love was located near where I was staying. It was so good that I ended up going twice! The first time I went for a little snack, and had the "breads and spreads". It was such a yummy little appetizer, with raw nut breads, cashew cheese, and assorted crunchy shredded vegetables. The staff were really helpful in helping me to pick out a good snack item that wasn't too large!
The second time I went for drinks and dessert. Had a really good piece of chocolate salmonberry cake, I wish I could have tried a few more of the desserts.
Next time I'm in Victoria, I would definitely return to be love!

Really disappointing, terrible service

I really wanted to like Bistro India because it is literally steps from my apartment! When we were there the place was pretty dead, but service was still horrible! Our server (who I'm pretty sure was actually the manager or owner) was inattentive and didn't even ask us if we wanted rice or naan with our dish (we didn't know it wasn't included). Once the real server came on shift things got better and we actually got some service!
There are definitely much better and friendlier Indian restaurants in the Edmonton downtown area.

Awesome vegan pastries!

The kind staff at Bliss Baked Goods are more than willing to help you select a vegan treat from their dairy and nut-free selection. My husband picked up a box of treats which included danishes, cookies and some kind of a cream-filled puff pastry. All were really delicious. I think they used real fruit in the danishes.
They also make vegan cupcakes and cakes if you order them in advance.
Their hours of opening are very short which makes it hard for me to get there, but it's worth the effort.

Veggie downtown dining

I love how Blue Plate's menu is very specifically labelled to indicate what is vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free. This makes it so easy for me to go there with friends who have allergies and what not.
The lentil loaf is really good, and I also like the veggie burger. However getting a table here can be really challenging, you definitely need a reservation. The price is a bit more than I can typically afford, so Blue Plate for me is a sort of "special occasions" restaurant.

Delicious vegan baking made locally!

It's hard to say no to Sarah and her delicious baking! You can find Blue Rose Vegan baked goods at The Tea Girl and Remedy. Sarah also does the farmer's market on 124 street in the summer months.
My personal favorites are the earl grey tea cupcake, and the pizza buns!

I rarely visit Winnipeg, but when I do, I always request that we go to Boon Burger! It is so nice to have a variety of choices in patties and toppings. The milkshakes are absolutely to die for. Not diet food by any means, but a totally delicious treat!

Delicious lebanese food on Whyte Ave!

Cafe Beirut is really easy to miss. It is a very small cafe located on the west end of Whyte Avenue. I skipped over it many a time before deciding to give it a shot a couple of weeks ago. And am I ever glad I did! The menu is about half vegan items, and has a really good number of choices (at least 8 vegan options at any time!). I tried the mujadara, and it was absolutely delicious (way better than the version I make at home!). It was very well-seasoned and fresh. I've also since tried their veggie wrap, which was delicious as well.
This is a great restaurant for take-out. The seating area is small but it is not super busy. Overall I highly recommend Cafe Beirut!

Great tofu burger!

I love Cafe Mosaic's spicy bomb tofu burger, the sauce is absolutely mouth watering. I go here about once a month, and I usually order the same thing every time! The caesar salad can be made vegan and is really good too. The restaurant itself is a bit of a hole in the wall, but the value and portion size is excellent.

I went out of my way to visit Cartems Donuterie while I was in Vancouver, and I'm really glad that I did! I had a cup of coffee and a maple walnut doughnut. The doughnut was perfect - both salty and sweet with a hint of smokiness. My only regret is that there isn't a Cartems where I live! I would have loved to have tried more kinds.

Awesome vegan menu!

Creole Envie has a great vegan menu on top of it's regular menu. You have to make a reservation for this small restaurant, make sure you specify that you want the vegan menu when you reserve!
I had the vegan andouille sausage po-boy, it was absolutely enormous! A whole french loaf of bread! Seriously it could probably feed two. You probably won't need a side dish, but the sweet potato fries are a good addition and there is even a vegan dipping sauce to go with them.
This is a restaurant that is somewhat high for my personal price range, but we definitely go there to celebrate special occasions! I highly recommend it.

Fast and affordable lunch in the heart of downtown
11 Dec 2013
This little lunch cafe is hosted in the basement of a Buddhist temple, and gains it's clientele almost exclusively by word-of-mouth. When customers arrive, they are greeted at the door by a person who collects $6 cash from each person in exchange for a lunch ticket which includes gratuity. The ticket lets you choose any item from the menu. The cafe itself is in the basement, but it is tidy and warm. The helpful and friendly servers are all volunteers, and the menu selection is quite good, consisting of a number of soups, noodle and rice dishes. Portions are large, and the food is flavorful and fresh. This is probably the most affordable veggie lunch in Edmonton's downtown! The service and food is delivered quickly enough that I can go here from my work and make it back within the hour. If you haven't checked it out yet, consider this your invitation!

A bit dissapointing
22 Jun 2016
I was in Vancouver on a trip, and Cuchillo was just around the corner from where we were staying. I really love Mexican food, and was excited to try them, but ended up a bit disappointed. When we arrived, the host gave us a bit of trouble for not having a reservation, despite the fact that the restaurant was completely empty, and stayed that way for our whole visit. I had the cauliflower tacos, and while they were tasty, the portion was incredibly small. This just might not be the kind of restaurant for me.

Favorite vegan foods store

I love shopping at Earth's General Store. Not only are they competitively priced with chain competitors like Planet Organic, but there staff are like a billion times more helpful and friendly. I love the wide selection of items that are available in bulk. EGS also puts on classes and workshops that are great too! I'm only sad that I have to drive my car to get over to the store, would love if someday they were able to have a downtown location!

Tasty, fresh vegan lunch in the heart of downtown
17 Feb 2016
The Earth's General Store Deli makes a daily lunch special which includes at least 1 or 2 vegan options for soup and sandwich/wrap. I've had a delicious chickpea wrap here, as well as a vegetable goulash that was really tasty. The special of the day is constantly changing, so keep an eye on their social media to find out what's being served. They also occasionally host pop-ups with the Sailin On food truck crew.

A vegan pizza treat
02 Oct 2015
There are several Famoso locations around Edmonton. The staff are generally knowledgeable and really good about helping out with vegan options. The big draw with Famoso is that they have vegan Daiya cheese on offer, and also have more exotic toppings like artichoke hearts and kalamata olives. My favorite is the Primavera pizza. For lunch, the small pizza special with the napoli salad is very good. There are also a few flavors of gelato that are dairy-free too.

Kind of blah
12 Sep 2012
Maybe I was there on a bad day or something, but I was really not impressed with freshii. The chickpea wrap I had was quite flavourless, and the chickpeas were overly hard like they had not been cooked properly. I haven't been back since.

A go-to place for delicious vegan pho
30 Jul 2015
Ask for the vegetarian menu when you arrive. The staff are really good about helping to differentiate vegan options from the rest of the vegetarian menu. My personal recommendation is the Buddha Pho, it's a bit spicy and it has basically every vegetable known to man in it (I even found a brussel sprout!). For dessert, try the golden pie, I know cassava sounds like a weird thing to make pie from, but it's actually very good. :)
