Not for vegans, bland food

31 Dec 2014

Amara is a nice-looking Indian restaurant inside of the Tokyo Skytree.

Unfortunately the food is very bland and there is only one option for vegans. My husband and I shared the samosa appetizer and both got daal since it was the only thing thing they could make vegan. They could not make any of the breads vegan.

The daal was very bland, which is surprising considering this is an Indian restaurant. The samosas were just ok but were also pretty bland. I would not go back.

Great place to eat while visiting

29 Sep 2014

Great place to eat while you're visiting or volunteering at Best Friends. They have a huge salad bar and various vegetarian lunch items. I asked the kitchen staff about vegan options and they brought me into the kitchen so I could get some vegan quiche (which they didn't have out for everyone). The food was good and cheap!

They only take cash though, so be prepared!

Tons of vegetarian and vegan options, all marked on the menu. The food is delicious and atmosphere is really intimate and authentic. Great place to go with a group of friends, including non-veg people. They have an extensive and fun drink menu too!

Seriously amazing food. I love this place. Their thai tea and pumpkin curry is to die for!

Didn't have a great experience

06 Jan 2012

When I went to Back to Eden I got the blackberry turnover and some peanut butter fudge. The turnover was way too greasy and sweet and the fudge was way too sweet. I've heard their ice cream is awesome and I would like to go back and try that, but I wasn't impressed with the baked goods I had.

So good!

Love this place. Great food. The atmosphere is meh--kind of like a cheap/chintzy Chinese place, but the food is great. Favorites are the sweet and sour pork, crispy beef, and Stewed Shiitake and Oyster Mushroom with Potato and Carrot in Satay Peanut Sauce. Great place to go with a group of friends and eat family-style.

Macrobiotic place in Kyoto

25 Apr 2014

Biotei serves macrobiotic food, which is essentially just vegan + fish. Almost everything on the menu can be made vegan and they have an English menu. The staff spoke English just enough to communicate.

The inside has a small town cafe feel and there were very friendly locals hanging out.

The food was Japanese and fresh, we liked everything we got. I especially loved my homemade ginger ale with fresh ginger! They even had vegan cookies for dessert!

Delicious and flavorful!

27 Sep 2014

Absolutely loved this place. The food was fantastic and flavorful, I especially loved the polenta stack.

Bit and Spur is everything you expect from a nice restaurant--fresh-made food with a chef that can customize dishes to meet your needs. They have some vegan items on the menu but our waiter and the chef were very willing to work with us and with so many great ingredients there were lots of options.

The atmosphere is very nice and relaxing. You could dress up for a nice night out or come in your hiking clothes after a long day (like we did). However, if you have a larger party I would recommend making a reservation.

Oh, and they have great mixed drinks!

Great for vegetarians, not so much for vegans

06 Nov 2012

Black Sheep Cafe has quite a few vegetarian options.

Though the menu says some vegetarian options can be made vegan, vegan options are limited and the staff doesn't know hardly anything about vegan diets. The portobello burger wasn't good at all and was served between two tortillas with no sauce. The Navajo taco was pretty good, and the cactus pear lemonade is delicious.

The staff seems to know little about vegan diets and wasn't sure what was and wasn't vegan. They went to ask the staff multiple times about different things.

Good food, but pricey

06 Jan 2012

Good food, and good raw options. But the prices are what you would pay at a super high-end restaurant and the food isn't up to par.

My FAVORITE Indian place

Lots and lots of vegan options, staff is knowledgeable, and the food is delicious!

Favorite Indian food in Utah

17 Aug 2014

My FAVORITE Indian food in Utah. Their curries, naan, appetizers... it's all fantastic!

They have a section of their menu for vegetarian dishes and vegan options are marked. Staff is also very knowledgeable about veganism.

Only downside is they aren't open for lunch :(

Best Shōjin Ryōri We Had in Japan

04 May 2014

My husband and I went to Japan in April 2014 and tried lots of traditional Buddhist cuisine/temple food. This was by far the best shōjin ryōri we had anywhere in Japan. The experience of the traditional private dining room and garden, the way the staff serve you, and the general atmosphere make it an unforgettable experience. It's definitely a must-see if you're going to Tokyo!

My only caution would be that to a Western palate shōjin ryōri is quite different. Nothing to do with the restaurant, just the food in general. One of the other reviewers said that they think Bon is better than Millennium and I would have to disagree. I think as far as a traditional Japanese dining experience and traditional Buddhist cuisine goes it's #1, but it's not my favorite restaurant I've ever been to.

Great place for lunch!

25 Apr 2014

We stopped by for lunch and had the daily lunch set which consists of a plate of food (based on the day), a drink, and dessert. It was all lovely and we really enjoyed it. Bon An Sha is run by a married couple--a Japanese man and his French (I think?) wife. Between them they speak English, Japanese, French, and Italian.

The daily lunch set is always vegetarian but isn't always vegan. But the couple was really nice and accommodating so I'm sure they could do a modified plate if some of it wasn't vegan.

Good sandwiches

02 Dec 2014

Buds offers an assortment of sandwiches, most of them with soy curls. Some of my favorites are the meatball and pesto subs. The sandwiches are flavorful and very filling. If you're in the mood for a big meaty sandwich I'd recommend it.

However, everything on their menu is very similar and the sandwiches have too much 'meat' (whether it's soy curls, meatballs, etc) in them for my taste. It makes them pretty heavy and not very healthy tasting.

Their new location does not have an indoor dining area but their new outdoor walkup window makes it easier to order when they're busy.

Good breakfast and cake

22 Jul 2013

Great place to go for breakfast or brunch. Their tofu sandwich is really good--they actually know how to cook tofu! They also have scrambled tofu and hummus toast. They have good coffee and soy milk. Staff is knowledgeable about what is vegan and their carrot cake is delicious.

Great coffee and cake, free wifi

21 Jul 2013

The inside has some interesting decor, but it's cozy and friendly. The owner is fun and is American so speaks English fluently. The only vegan item on the menu that I could see was the carrot cake but it was delicious so I didn't mind. The coffee was great and I loved their cappuccino. Plus they have free wifi! It's a nice place to hang around.

Cafe Fresh is decent, but like the other reviewers say--it's pretty unpredictable. Their veggie wraps can be really good or really bad depending not the day and who makes it--once I even got a piece of turkey in my wrap! Gross. But they have a good selection of healthy vegan options including at least one dessert option.

Also, they are REALLY slow and get really bogged down during lunch. Not a great place to go if you're in a hurry.
