Delicious vegan dishes!
16 Nov 2010
We loved this place! It's a little hard to spot from the road but just look for the sign!
My husband and I shared a plate that included a wonderful, dessert-like sweet potato samosa, a salad, some perfectly seasoned and cooked tofu and a few other things. It was SO, SO delicious! They even threw in free vegan pumpkin soup - YUM! This one plate was plenty filling for the two of us!
The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating and let us know what was vegan and what wasn't.
We got to hear some live jazz music, which was great, and the actual atmosphere of the restaurant was so fantastic! Very Hawaiian-tikki feeling with "indoor" (which is somewhat open to the outdoors) and outdoor seating. They're only open for dinner but it's so worth trying this place!

I really wanted to try it...
29 Jun 2009
I was so excited to try Backspace! The space was really cool (and HUGE!) but I was disappointed when my boyfriend and I had to wait for an hour until they started to serve food (they don't serve food until 4pm - we got there at 3pm). Just because we wanted to try it so badly, we waited around and, when 4pm rolled around, we asked for a menu and the woman informed us that it's a limited menu because they are updating their kitchen (or something like that). I had looked at their menu online and many things looked SO good, but none of their smaller menu had any of those things. We left to find another place to eat. I still really want to try this place when they get their kitchen back, so I'll come back and revise!

I just absolutely love Sue's Java! This is by far the best coffee house in Redding. It's cozy and everyone is very friendly.
Not only do they have awesome coffee, but offer such a good variety of vegan goodies, especially for Redding! I'm so happy there is a place vegans can go and hang out and have the types of options that Sue's offers.

My boyfriend and I went to Red and Black Cafe to get some good vegan food -- and we got it! The location is great (right around the corner from other vegan shops) and great selection of food. We wanted to use a credit card, but they didn't take them at that time (they said they would be getting a credit card machine in a few weeks) but they did let us write a check because we didn't have enough checks! That was nice!

Very good food!

My husband and I stopped by here for lunch during our honeymoon and we were pleasantly surprised by the service and food!
I had the black bean burger on focaccia and my husband had the portobello burger on focaccia. Both were extremely tasty! We had to sub the Hawaiian sweet bread for the focaccia since the sweet bread isn't vegan, but we loved that there was at least a vegan option and the focaccia was outstanding!
Unfortunately they didn't have a vegan soup option or the vegan pate (shoot!) but our meals were very good.
The owners are supper nice and totally accommodating to vegans! They let us know exactly what was and what wasn't vegan, which makes things o-so-much easier.
There are many other menu items that are vegetarian on the menu, though! A lot of their breakfast stuff looked good, but being vegan, we couldn't try anything!
Worth stopping by!

We didn't try any food here but the shakes were wonderful! We got a tropical fruit blended one as well as a Kauai Chai shake, which included coffee, chai, banana and other juices. SO good! Worth the stop if you're going to or coming from the North Shore!

Amazing food and wonderful atmosphere!

This place was such a great place to visit! We were passing through and thought we'd stop by and try the new vegan bakery in Sac and we are SO glad we did!
We went on a Sunday and my fiance got the "bottomless brunch" which he raved about while he was eating it and for the remaining part of the day! He loved it! There was so much variety to it and everything on the plate (or plates in his case) was delicious!
I had the Sweet Potato and Avocado Panini and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! It was simple but so great and tasty! The salad on the side was great, too.
The people working there were very attentive and nice and the atmosphere was clean and cozy. I especially loved the multiple outdoor spaces.
It was great to see how many people were actually there when we went, because I definitely don't want this place to go away any time soon!

Incredible food, atmosphere and service!

My boyfriend and I tried out Good Karma and it was absolutely amazing. We tried it on a Sunday, so it wasn't very crowded and there was plenty of seating available. The guy helping us was so nice and offered a lot of advice for vegans new to the area!
The food was AMAZING! We had the mashed potatoes (to die for), the stuffed bell peppers (super good) and the BBQ "chicken wings" (I don't know how they do it). Everything was so delicious and what a great deal for $9! My bf and I filled up with just one plate!
There's a lot of really great art on the walls and there's definitely a laid-back, eclectic feel (which I happen to love).
Definitely try this place if you're in the area.

This place was great! The owners are so incredibly nice! They helped us find what we liked (although everything looked amazing) and they were very friendly.
The place is so cute and bright - it made me feel happy!
The food is absolutely amazing. It's fresh and delicious and should be tried by everyone. The tea that they give you is the best tea that I have EVER tasted!
Try this place if you're in (or within a few dozen miles) of Sunnyvale. It's well worth it!

Great place to pick up some vegan staples!

Papaya's was very well stocked with a huge variety of vegan frozen and dry goods as well as a decent selection of hot and cold foods within their food bar.
It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it to support a local store selling stuff that vegans can eat!
It's a great choice if you don't want to go out for each meal!

I want to move to Seattle just to eat here!

This is not only the best vegan pizza I have ever had but the best pizza I've had PERIOD! It's so freakin' awesome! I dream of the pizza and the variety they offer. If only I didn't like 10 hours away, I would be in there everyday. I hope everyone tries this place out! It's awesome! I wish they would establish one in San Fran and Portland! You will walk away wanting more even if you're stuffed to the brim! GO THERE!

Wonderful food and great atmosphere!

My husband and I went to Kaua'i for our honeymoon and, as vegans, were afraid we weren't going to be able to find much on the island. Boy, were we wrong!
Of all of the places we tried, we loved Rainbow Living Foods the most! There is a generous selection of entrees, desserts, and drinks so going there twice during our week there was wonderful!
There was only one very nice and friendly guy working both times we went, so it was a bit slow, but we didn't mind at all. The atmosphere is great and there is indoor and outdoor seating and you can even get your food to go and step right out to the beach to eat!
We tried the pizza, taco and falafel wrap as well as the fudge and energy balls for desserts and the Rainbow shake and banana nut milk shake for beverages - everything was amazing! The taco was our favorite, though. :)
I thought everything was reasonably priced ($10 for an entrée, $3-6 for dessert, around $6 for a large shake) considering the island has many expensive options.
This place has great food that makes you feel energized and filled but not overly full - so you can still go snorkeling or kayaking or hiking or whatever you have planned!
Hopefully this place will be around for a very long time. It deserves to be!

Soooo honkin' huge (and delicious!)
25 Jun 2008
The burritos are SO good! I got a medium-sized one and it was HUGE! I can't imagine the "honkin'" size! The owner is SO nice and happy! You could tell she was happy to be doing what she loves -- making vegan and vegetarian food! The food is really great and it's definitely worth the small amount of money you pay! As a visitor to Portland, it was great to see a friendly vegan face and get some great vegan food!

BRUNCH in the East Bay!
10 Jan 2011
This was my first time visiting Souley Vegan. My husband and I wanted vegan brunch SO badly and decided on this great restaurant to curb our craving!
Brunch is from 10a-2p on Sundays only and they only serve brunch - nothing from their regular menu. It was a tad disappointing that we couldn't scoop up a few to-go dishes for later since we were there, but the brunch made up for that!
They offered a combo plate (which my husband got) that included grits and corn, tofu scramble, toast, smothered potatoes, and a few slices of fruit (for $10). He also added blueberry pancakes with maple syrup (+$2 more) and a biscuit with gravy (+$2), just to try everything out! Let me tell you - he was stuffed by the time he was done!
I got the three combo plate for $10 - a biscuit with gravy, tofu scramble, and smothered potatoes (I don't really know what they're smothered by - but it's amazing). It also came with some toast and a few slices of fruit.
You get pretty decent portions for the money you spend and the food was great!
I can see people thinking that things may be a little salty, but I didn't mind it. It definitely didn't take away from any other flavor! My favorites were the grits and corn (husband let me try his - they were creamy and flavorful, just be sure to eat them together!), the smothered potatoes and the biscuit and gravy (you only get one biscuit, but it's a big one!).
The staff were so incredibly friendly and attentive. They were hoppin' in there this morning and the fact they could be so nice while being so busy was great. It did take a little bit to get our food but not too long.
There's plenty of seating, too!
I will definitely be back for the brunch but REALLY want to try their main menu at some point!

Amazing food, great service, quirky ambiance
17 Jul 2010
I love this place. This veg restaurant has the best ambiance by far - quirky and colorful while still relaxing. There is quite a bit of information about the owner's particular beliefs but I'd rather see that stuff which talks about helping the environment, animals and people than go into a restaurant that doesn't have any info. about what you can do AFTER you're done with your meal.
The service is great as well. They are very laid back but professional. They aren't pushy or fake or overly happy. They're calm and get you the things you need in a reasonable amount of time.
The food is SO awesome. We feel so lucky to live near a place that serves such amazing vegan food. While it's not the healthiest thing on the menu, their ocean basket is insanely good. I haven't had fried shrimp since become veg over 10 years ago and their version tastes JUST like the real thing! And their exotic mushrooms taste a lot like calamari (or what I remember them tasting like way back when...)!
Their raw Spicy Thai Wrap was AMAZING and you get so much for the price. You won't think you're eating raw when you try this!
Today, we tried a slice of their tiramisu and, let me tell you, this was probably one of the most decadent, delectable desserts I have EVER HAD. I don't remember seeing it on the menu before, but, OMG, if they have it, GET IT. And get it with their coffee too - it's smooth, strong and delicious.
Obviously, I highly recommend this place. If anything, I wish they would start serving breakfast (tofu scrambles, waffles, French toast, etc.), even just one day a week because I know it would be absolutely delicious and we definitely need something like that in San Jose!

One of my favorites!
29 Jun 2009
I don't live in Portland, but this restaurant is possibly one of the reasons why I'll be moving here. It is SO good! My boyfriend and I come here every time we visit. I've had a variety of things, including the messy sammy (AWESOME!) for breakfast and the seitan cheese steak for dinner, and have been nothing but impressed with everything I've had. I've found the staff to be very attentive and friendly and the atmosphere to be lively. I will DEFINITELY be returning to Vita and encourage everyone to visit!
