Disappointed

Was so excited to try this place but was very let down. Food had no flavor and staff were super unpleasant.

Come for the decor/atmosphere

Wanted to love this place. Love the roadhouse/diner vibe. Ordered the famous Chickun tenders and biscuits. Overall very average. Biscuits bland and tough. Chickun tenders bready texture. Hash good. Not enough gravy (thin and probably made from a packet). Veggies under seasoned. Wanted the whole thing to be smothered in gravy. Don’t think I’d come back

Vertically Delightful

We loved eating here! Being able to have anything on the menu was a fun not oft experienced phenomenon. My kids were thrilled and my non-vegan hubby found food that he was okay with as well. Good food. Happy tummies.

Pros: Staff helpful, Everything vegan!

A Vegan Greasy Spoon Delight

I keep reading about how cool this place is and today, I finally got a chance to go. I had read the menu ahead of time and couldn't stop thinking about the Dude Cakes. The idea of a gluten-free and vegan tempeh sausage stuffed pancakes smothered in gravy was too much for my big appetite to resist. This greasy spoon breakfast is what dreams are made of, but generally reserved for self described human garburators. (Ie people who have no eating restrictions.) The dish did not disappoint, it was delicious and incredibly filling. Despite being a big eater, I couldn't finish my plate.

My date opted for something smaller and had the blue plate breakfast; a perfectly seasoned tofu scramble served with golden hashbrowns, toast, and jam for only $11.

This place has a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff were incredibly nice, and the service style seems to lend to the idea that they either do tip pooling or have an excellent working culture (or both). Everyone was smiling and attentive, ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

I would like to try some of their comforting blue plate specials like mac'n cheeze and mushroom "steak" n' fries, this spot is a must-visit. The generous portions, fair prices, delicious flavors, and warm, attentive service make it a place worth returning to.

Pros: Low prices , Vegan remakes of blue plate specials, Everything can be made gluten-free

Big servings

I was so happy to finally try Vertical Diner. The atmosphere is absolutely adorable! They have so many options to choose from, we got
The La Mesa, chocolate chip pancakes, tiramisu and carrot cake. The food tasted great and portions sizes were big. They also make their own sauces including ketchup and seitan. The desserts were very decadent. We will definitely be coming back!

Pros: Portion sizes, Great flavors

Vegan diner food!

This was a good stop. A vegan, a pescatarian and an omnivore all left satisfied. We tried the tender tigers (buffalo) and they were super good. Not tender but crispy. Also very hot! They pour that sauce all over it. Get the sauce on the side for dipping so you can adjust how much you want. We also tried The Mountain with mushrooms, the PDX Cheeze Stake and the TBLAT. Everything was good. The Mountain was very flavorful and not dry! There was a delicious orange dipping sauce for the TBLAT. The Cheese Stake was the least flavorful of the three dishes and very messy. The iced chais were just okay for me but a hit with the others. Also shared a carrot cake, which was great. Would like to try more menu items!

Pros: Reasonable prices!

Vertical Portland - Vegan diner

Like it's sister site in Salt Lake, vertical Portland doesn't deviate from the formula. All your favorite local diner food is here. Went on a Sunday morning so the team was pretty busy. Didn't get coffee order until after food had arrived. Needed to be a little patient with a busy Sunday morning crowd.

Pros: Same old regulars , Pretty tasty food

Cons: Prepare to wait on the weekends, Took a while to get drinks.

10 out of 10 every time, + diverse clientele

Great place to come solo (diner seating at the bar) or with friends (think old school, puffy vinyl booths). The food is fantastic every time. Service is friendly. And though Portland is a disproportionately white city, I’m pleased to see people of different races and ethnicities dining here. I think it has a very welcoming, wholesome vibe that makes everyone feel good. And there’s plenty of easy, free parking, which is always a draw for me. I love this place! (Favorites: Joaquin Phoenix lentil burger and crazy-beautiful side salad)

Pros: Comfortable booths, Perfect food, Friendly vibe

Cons: Would like to see new items & seasonal offerings

Vertical Victuals

I ordered the Blue Plate Breakfast. The tofu scramble was flavorful, but oily. The country potatoes were well-seasoned, soft inside, and crispy outside. The toast is served with butter and/or jam.

Pros: all vegan, off-street parking

Good Atmosphere and Food

This restaurant has a nice atmosphere and feels like a traditional diner. The Reuben and vegan chicken fried steak were pretty good. The reuben could use some more sauce and maybe thinner seitan. The vegan chicken was a bit chewy. The food was tasty overall. The tiramisu was great. The staff were quite friendly. I would return here based off of my experience.

First time and I will definitely be back!!

I’m so used to having a single option so looking over the menu got me excited. I went with a chai iced tea (delicious!) and got the biscuits and gravy and it comes with tofu scramble and some potatoes and your choice of protein (I chose the tempeh). It was so good!!!! I dined by myself and talked a lot to the super nice server, I think his name was Zach. Great food and great staff!

Cozy and bight, with great options

Such a great atmosphere here. I love to come in the afternoons for tea, coffee, or kombucha and a light bite and of course brunch! 80% of the menu can be made gluten free and all of their foods are house made. Great place to by yourself or with others. Cozy booths and bar. Convenient location right off of I-5.

I love their house potatoes and all of their savory breakfast options, as well as sandwiches and burgers. All the non-vegans I’ve brought here have loved the experience.

Disappointed

I was excited by the prospect of a BLAT with a reasonable substitute for bacon. Unfortunately, there was nothing appealing about my sandwich (or soggy fries).

The bacon substitute was sliced slabs of tempeh, which were in no way thin nor crispy. I mentioned to my GF dinner companion that I’ve had better “bacon” made from carrots, and she mentioned you can make it better with banana peels!

Lettuce was fine, but it could have used 2 leaves to help offset the huge hoagie roll (not the grilled French bread, as described). Tomato was pallid and tasteless, despite the summer availability of amazing local tomatoes.

My sandwich arrived with sliced raw onions (why?), but not the avocado, so I had to send it back and they added 3 meager slices. The sauce was fine.

Given the wealth of vegan options in Portland, I would not go back.

Pros: Everything is vegan, Some things are gluten free, Uncrowded for a Monday dinner

Cons: Very old-school approach , Food not as described on menu, No zero proof cocktails on the menu

Neat old-fashioned diner

50s diner with all vegan menu. Had the cheese stake and chikn fried stake. Thought the chikn was the better of the two, but both were good.
