Delicious and lots of choices! - Edit
Amazing little find! Tons of vegan options for mains and dessert. It was delicious too with great sizes portions! Only negative is the drinks aren't cheap and they fill the glass full of ice so you barley get anything, so ask for no ice or only a couple of pieces to avoid feeling over charged!

Vegan or gluten free? - Edit
Vegan options, but not what you'd hope for from a seaside chippy. But meat options also more than a typical chippy.
Read moreOrdered bread roll with vegan spread, we're told a vegan roll was not available, but vegan bread was, and it arrived with butter, and seeded slightly crumbly bread. We asked for vegan spread, which was delivered, but we think they got confused about the veganism. Which then makes us think do they know the difference?
Chips were good though.

Beware ordering the vegan curry - Edit
I wanted to love this place. We came because of the glowing reviews, but had a disappointing time.
Read moreWe ordered the vegan ‘chicken’ tikka masala and the veg hotpot between us.
The food arrived and the hotpot was really lovely, nice and tasty, hot and good portion - my parters meal arrived and we were instantly skeptical…
After some inspection, we were served real chicken and we’d ate some too which put a real downer on everything. We called over one of the staff and they instantly apologised and offered to change it, mistakes do happen and they did try and correct it but ultimately it’s not great being served meat for a place with such good options and we’d eaten some of it unknowingly.
It was upsetting and spoiled having the rest of the curry. Upon paying the bill we politely asked to take the curry off the bill and we pay the rest but was met with some passive aggressive tone from the manager about how she just follows what’s on a sheet and her daughter is ‘vegan’, as if that makes it better. Her tone was disgusting and made it out like we were the ones in the wrong. It just made us feel really upset which is such a shame, everything else about this place was great, but that encounter at the end just ruined it.
Pros: Veg hotpot was nice, Chips were good, Servers were very polite
Cons: Manager was very rude, Mistakes likely to happen

Great find! - Edit
In a panic after the place I thoroughly researched had closed their kitchen early, I quickly found this place via Happy Cow. Absolutely fantastic find! Has its own vegan menu. The staff were a delight and removed my anxiety by constantly saying vegan when talking to me about my order. The battered sausages were small but delicious (so order extra). Chips weren't the best chippy chips but certainly not a disappointment either.

What a gem! - Edit
Stumbled on this place, expected just to get chips, but they have a whole seperate vegan menu! Sausage and chips was an absolute steal at £4.40. Chips weren't the best chippy chips I've ever had but sausage was amazing. Friendly staff, I'd come here again.

Seaside chippy with good vegan options - Edit
Popped in on a recommendation from a friend & we weren’t disappointed. We ate in the restaurant & I had their Moving Mountains hotdog with chips & curry sauce and my husband had their ‘chicken’ tikka. All in all a pretty decent meal!

Not exactly what we expected. - Edit
Extensive vegan menu. Chatty staff. Falafel particularly underwhelming: deep fried falafel balls on chips. No hummus (contrary to menu). Veggie buger ok. Veggie lasagne was nice, as was vegan hotpot with sliced potato.

Oh, how i have long missed out on the chippy experience since my local stopped doing vegan things. This was everything you could wish for to fulfil that seaside chippy need.

I wasn’t expecting such a range of vegan options but there is a full page for the vegan menu as well as a separate dessert section 😱🤩
Read moreI had the hot dog with curry sauce and vegan garlic mayo. Portion size was big, the chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the hot dog was a moving mountains hot dog and the brioche and fried onions were delicious too. The curry sauce was very nice to go with everything!
I always love finding vegan chippy options (I don’t tend to have unless I’m on holiday now where there’s more options) Barnacles did not disappoint!
Unfortunately didn’t have room for dessert 🥲

Vegan fish and chips + the best curry sauce! - Edit
Thought we'd only be able to get chips as a vegan option, was blown away by the choice and separate vegan menu! We got the fishless fingers and chips, curry sauce, and onion rings. So delicious and the onion rings were freshly made rather than the mashed ones fish and chip places often serve. The curry sauce was one of the best we've had. Would love to come back and try the other vegan options!💗

I would eat here every day if I could - Edit
Had fishless fingers and chips the first day, and hot dog and chips the second, followed by raspberry and frangipan tart.
Read moreIt's a chippy restaurant, with chippy through adjoining doors. Lots of historic pics of Llandudno on the walls, but the youthful staff keep it fresh. They can't do enough for you.
Vegan menu has its own page which is SO mucg easier, and so much choice!!
Loos for customers aren't wheelchair friendly, and the entrance is a bit tight if you're on wheels too, but they do have outside seating.
I just love Barnacles!

Discovered Barnacles after recently moving to the area and have been back twice since. They have a whole vegan menu and genuinely the best veggie/ vegan chip shop chips I've ever had. My absolute fave in Llandudno. Lovely staff and speedy service too.

I was amazed by the separate vegan menu they had. Couldn’t believe it. They were very knowledgeable too about the vegan options and I am not 100% sure but it seemed they cooked it separately.
Read moreWe got a battered sausage and chips. They apologised for the sausage being small but we were so happy they had something for us we didn’t bother. Chips were lovely and so was the things we tried on the menu.

Extremely Vegan Friendly Chippy! - Edit
Note: Visited 15.09.24. Updated review 08.11.24 to correct grammar mistakes.
Read moreBarnacles are infamous among vegans in North Wales as they make a real effort to cater to vegans. The chippy is divided into a restaurant and takeaway, and during my visit, I decided to sit in. There are variations between menus, so please check both before visiting. Menus can be found on Happy Cow and Google. I have attached pictures of the restaurant menu in this post.
The vegan menu is contained within the menu booklet handed to me by an incredibly lovely waiter (I didn't catch her name, but she deserves a special mention) and there was also a vegan special on during my visit. There is no separate vegan drinks menu, but within the standard drinks menu, vegan drinks are labelled (such as milkshakes and wines). I had the Chocolate Milkshake, which was honestly pretty poor as it had not blended with any ice cream. To eat, I had the Falafel with Chips, Onion Rings, and Vegan Garlic Mayo as a dip. The portions were good, and I really enjoyed the food. I was surprised by how nice the falafel was, considering we were in a fish and chip shop, and the onion rings, although not much to look at, were very tasty! I was too stuffed for dessert, but they had a good selection, and I will perhaps have something the next time I sit in. I am also keen to try some things from their takeaway menu; especially their battered sausages!
Barnacles is a great spot for vegans who are after a chippy with a large selection and respect for their lifestyle. Get yourself down there to enjoy a warm welcome in a laid-back atmosphere!

Never judge a book by it's cover! - Edit
I went in here on spec and was amazed to see a dedicated vegan menu. I ordered the lentil and red pepper soup which comes with bread & butter. Unfortunately the butter was dairy and there was no vegan alternative. However the soup was delicious.
Read moreThis isn't the sort of cafe I would usually call into but I saw outside the sign which said vegan and vegetarian options. What a delightful surprise to discover a good choice of vegan options.
There is outdoor seating available, although it's on the pavement with plenty of passes by so not particularly pleasant unless it's a quiet sunny day. But it is Llandudno so beware of the seagulls!

Disappointing - Edit
I think I must have caught Barnacles on a bad day after seeing all the good reviews here. I had a vegan burger, which was dry and tasteless. The chips weren't great either. I appreciate that they have a separate vegan section, but it didn't taste good for me, I'm afraid.
