Vegan Sushi at its Best

I’ve wanted vegan sushi which wasn’t just an easy cop-out for a long time and Alexis Gauthier’s menu at 123V has delivered it. Yes it has the Southern California sushi which has been mimicked in all vegan places purporting to make good vegan sushi, but the other sushi was on another level. It’s hard to describe this sushi without sounding sycophantic but my review is honest and from a real sushi eater’s perspective as I only turned vegan 2 years back.

Petit Sushi Set or Grand Sushi Set? The grand has more of what is served in the petit with the addition of Prawn Tempura.

‘Petit Sushi Set’ - Lets start with the Uramaki There were two California makis which were as anyone would expect but very nice all the same, and two vegan-salmon with avocado makis which were on a new level. The blend of salmon and avocado complemented each other - the creaminess of the avocado supported the salmon flavour balancing the taste into a moreish, light and fresh bite. Next was the Nigiri and in my sushi opinion, the stars of the plate. Like the uramaki there were two of each. The avocado was a nice twist on a sushi dish, creamy, light and perfect to accompany the warm sun on my back. Get ready to gear up because the other two were the vegan-salmon and vegan-tuna. I thought them impossible to replicate as both have very defined textures and tastes but Alexis managed it beautifully. The salmon is cold, the texture sticky to the tongue like the real thing and soft with a light chew as you bite through it. The salmon flavour is there and it tasted like it was caught that morning. The tuna has more bite as you’d expect and the flavour is stronger than that of the salmon, but it’s not fishy and incredibly akin to a fresh piece of tuna. When all of the sushi has a slither of the amazing pink picked ginger placed on it and dipped in the sauce it’s reached a new level. Looking and tasting like the real thing it would fool any sushi eater. To finish there’s a sweet tofu pocket - simply delish.

Paired with a bottle of Albariño it was unbeatable.

Thank you Alexis Gauthier

(To help others - The ‘Uramaki’ is the round rice rolled one with a filling. The ‘Nigiri’ is the rectangular mound of rice topped with a piece of fish (vegan in this instance), usually with a small amount of wasabi between the fish and rice to hold the two together, or a thin strip of toasted seaweed might be used to tie them - the latter in this case - see images)

Delicious food, bad service

The food is delicious, the service was cold, seems like the waitress didnt want to give us a service, and also she disappear and other costumer had to search for her. It overshadowed the good experience of the great food. :(

Pros: Delicious food

Cons: service was cold and unpleasant, The waitress disappeared at some point

Good food but poor service

I found this place on HappyCow and was very excited to go there for a breakfast.

I ordered the Vinglish breakfast and a juice and the food was pretty good. The menu is very interesting as well and I will definitely be back at some point to try their sushi as well.

That said, the customer service I experienced was very poor from the beginning to the end. I got there at 10am exactly and had to wait at the entrance about 5 minutes before the lady from the perfume shop next door went to ask the cook to come out of the kitchen and assist me.
Once seated, I saw the waitress arriving with her jacket (she was probably late to work) and she came to take my order while still in the jacket and the handbag.
After ordering it took another good 25-30 minutes to get the food even though I was the only customer in the restaurant, which in my opinion is a bit too long. After eating, no one came to clear the table. I paid and left.

In summary, the food was good and I will certainly give this place another chance in the future but the service was disappointing.

Pros: Very interesting menu, vegan sushi

Cons: Slow and disorganized service

Great food, service not as good as it could be

First of all, absolutely wonderful food and wine

Just had a challenge in the run up to the meal, as we knew we would be busy (and we were) and we couldn’t work out when the place shut.
(Currently kitchen shuts at 7, restaurant at😄but had to wait til we got there, despite numerous calls and an email) so was very stressed about that

The.n second frustration was they just dumped main meal in table whilst we were eating starters. (We did order when starters had arrived, but expected them to co-ordinate that for us, at this level of restaurant)
However, that seemed to be connected with the kitchen pushing to close up at 7 (although our main meals arrived well before that)

Pros: Great food, Fully vegan, Great wine

Cons: Difficult to contact, Unclear when it shuts, Poor service attention to convivial meal

Awesome place, great vegan sushi

Vegan sushi at this fancy yet welcoming place is something else entirely, ticks all the boxes. The chickpea fries are awesome too. Not too expensive for the experience. Will be back!

Tasty vegan sushi

Went with a friend for my birthday and had a lovely time. The sushi platter was really tasty and had a nice fishy taste and we got the chocolate cake for pudding. Thoroughly enjoyed and found the service to be good.

Best vegan burger we ever had

Well the cheeseburger is simply the best vegan burger my wife and I have ever had. The place is nice and cozy, everything we had was delicious. The waiters (we visited this pace twice) were extremely polite and welcoming. Highly recommended, one of the best vegan restaurants in London for sure.

Good to find a vegan place in this part of town

There are few vegan restaurants in this part of town so we were very pleased to enjoy a lovely lunch at 123v in the basement of Fenwicks department store, with friendly but unobtrusive service.

The quesadillas were very cheesy and mild in flavour (even the spicy one). Our son raved about the sushi he ordered and daughter enjoyed the chicken burger and jerk bites. As all the other comments say, the chickpea fries are amazing.

The slight disappointment was that all the burgers were of the fake-meat type: it would have been nice to have a more vegetable-based option. Also, purely personal preference, but I don’t like bench seats and would have been more comfortable seated in a chair.

Nice menu, terrible service

After waiting for 15 mins nobody was in the restaurant to greet us so we sat at a table.
We ordered the Red Yuzu bowl with watermelon sashimi for it to be replaced with beetroot, without notice - to then have the waitress, tell us it was watermelon!
Later the kitchen confirmed that during the winter they replace the watermelon with beetroot, but haven’t changed the menu…

A top spot in the making.

Well done by the company securing a prime location of London where more vegan restaurant are very much needed.

Hard to judge a restaurant after only 1 visit, more so during the post pandemic year where hospitality it's facing unprecedented challenges.

Concept and proposal are varied enough to catch the attention of a broad range of guests. Will become soon a top spot in West Central.

Not as good as it used to be

I went when it first opened and was really impressed with both the good and service, but my recent visit may be my last. I shared 4 dishes with a friend and only one, the quesadilla, was exceptional. It was the first time I tried the sushi and it was nice, but not terrific, and for £17 I expected it to be better. The Jerk Bites we’re dry and hard. For the price, I expect better.

Pros: All vegan, Has vegan sushi, Variety of choices

Cons: Expensive, Some good was dry, Quality has come down

Fantastic

I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars. The best vegan food and variety ever. We were a group of 3 and each dish was excellent. Sushi range is amazing but the Tempura "prawn" is astounding. The jerk starter fantastic, the chickpea chips amazing, the dark chocolate desert amazing,. All in All amazing range of vegan foods served by lovely charming staff. Busy place so prebook.

Pros: Fantastic foods

Expensive breakfast

We had pancakes and continental breakfast. The pancakes were good but the portion was small. The other breakfast was very basic. Quite overpriced. The restaurant is located in the basement of a department store.

My New Favorite In London

I have a major weakness for vegan sushi, and 123v is among the world's finest sushi restaurants. I am doing a vegan tasting tour of London, so only ordered a vegan sushi sampler. Perfection. The prawn tempura will appeal to meat eaters and vegans alike. The assortment of rolls and Inari are beautifully presented and you will savor every bite.

Delightful sunny terrace

Service was amazing. Went with food recommendation. Chickpea chips awesome. Tempura prawns tasted terrifyingly accurate, sushi platter spectacular, started flavoursome. We also mentioned the Harper award and were gifted a delicious strawberry and Prosecco cocktail. The puddings were divine. Can’t rave enough about how awesome the entire experience was. Definitely will be back.

A welcome addition…..

It is encouraging to see such an esteemed chef focus on vegan food. The presentation of the food was superb, however, I was expecting more from the flavours.

The grand sushi set was a site to behold, the neat sushi, wasabi pebble, ginger and dipping sauce all enticing. The ‘salmon’ sushi looked like the real thing. The taste of the sushi on the whole was good, the inari in particular, juicy and sweet. However, the ‘salmon’ and ‘tuna’ were lacking in flavour. In addition, the ‘salmon’ had a rubbery texture as did the prawns, once the light tempura had been bitten through. I don’t see the point of visually replicating fish purely for the visual effect, it has to have flavour too.

The bacon cheeseburger is made from a Beyond Meat burger. Thankfully the Beyond Meat burger is a common site in restaurants now. That makes it all the more disappointing that a chef of Gauthier’s high standing hasn’t created something unique. The burger was fine with tasty pickles and sauce. The accompanying fries were perfect but even better are the chickpea fries that are crisp, light and fluffy Inside.

To finish we had the chocolate cake which was rich and indulgent, if a little small. The accompanying sour cream wasn’t to my taste with its odd tang.

I would certainly try other things on the menu and it is a bold move from chef Gaulthier to embrace veganism. I suppose my expectations were very high considering the pedigree of the restaurant and it is the dilemma of a top chef that, when those expectations aren’t entirely met, the shortcomings stand out even more.

Great casual vegan spot

Popped in for lunch and what a treat. Everything was delicious! The sushi was great (the texture of the vegan sashimi was unbelievable!).

The aubergine toast tastes amazing and the tempura "prawns" are just next level! Highly recommend it!

Do not take non-vegans here!

I don't usually give a bad review unless things are REALLY bad.

I booked a table for 6pm, got there on time and was told the kitchen was closing at 6:30. I ordered drinks and a burger and asked if I could order desert later and they said I needed to order it then as the kitchen was closing. The desert arrived before the main so it was just melting in the sun (unfortunately it wasn't very tasty either), the "crispy" chickn burger was soggy.

They started clearing the tables and chairs outside and said they were closing at 7.

I don't understand why you would have tables available for 6pm reservations when you close at 7. It was rushed, expensive and not enjoyable.

I was with a non-vegan friend who was not impressed at all and I felt embarrassed.

Staff are not to blame for this. They were obviously stressed and overworked but were still friendly and polite. Owners need to care a bit more.

Pros: Lots of options including sushi , Good location

Cons: Food was bad and expensive , Gives vegans a bad name , Service was rushed

Lovely al fresco lunch

Lovely vegan place with outside seating. Great selection of food including salads, burgers, desserts and even vegan sushi! 4 types of plant based milk alternatives, and good/friendly service. Really enjoyed my lunch here. I had the Soleil Riviera salad and it was gorgeous. The coffee was also lovely and well made. Would return.

Pros: Fully vegan, Lots of seating on a quiet street off Oxford St, Delicious salad

Cons: London prices - expenny
