Vegan Familiar - Edit
While limited “on the menu” vegan options, they were very accommodating to omit the cheese from one of the salads and the veggie enchiladas. The food tasted great! Margaritas were excellent too!

2019 review: We remembered this place as having great vegan options when we came four years ago. Unfortunately the dinner menu no longer has the delicious vegetarian burrito. They have a veggie enchilada but you have to customize the heck out of it to make it vegan.

2015 review: This place was exactly what we were looking for in Kauai. We ended up going here twice: once for happy hour and once for a light dinner. We live in LA, so when I heard there was an LA-based Mexican place with vegan options near our hotel, I was keen to try it. I'm glad that we did.
Happy hour prices are awesome; $5 for a margarita in Poipu is a steal. We paid almost three times that ($14) for a single margarita at our hotel. The service is pleasant enough and at dinner, you get free chips and salsa.
The real benefit of coming here in my opinion, however, was the delicious vegetarian burrito! We ordered it vegan (no cheese) and it was probably the most flavorful thing we had on the island. We found a lot of the vegan options in Kauai to taste a bit bland, and this was totally on-point for spices and zest, without being too spicy for my husband.
Tip: Ask for the housemade yellow hot sauce if you're a real spice fiend. That stuff is pure habanero gold.

While nothing on the menu is explicitly vegan, staff were knowledgeable of what could be modified to be vegan. I had the enchilada vegetariano without the dairy and it was fine. If you're eating out with omnis, this place will fill you up, but I wouldn't make a point of going otherwise.

vegan rice and beans - Edit
I had a great taco salad here, subbing rice for cheese. It was fresh and tasty. There's a bowl menu item which can be made vegan by leaving the cheese off. Since both the rice and beans are vegan there are other possible menu modifications as well.

One of the best choices for vegans in Poipu Beach area - Edit
In an area dominated by "surf 'n turf" fare, not much in the way of interesting vegan choices. Choosing the "bowl" versions of the "vegetariano" items (& omitting the dairy, etc.) is probably the best way to go. Do not know if the flour tortillas are vegan friendly.

accomodating - Edit
There are two places to sit in this restaurant--upstairs or downstairs--and each has a different menu. The first time we came we sat upstairs and had a great experience. The second time we sat downstairs and it wasn't as good. Below I review each separately.

However, we found our waiter Zack and the kitchen staff were very accommodating and knowledgeable about what it meant to be vegan. (For example, they offered to make the Brussels sprouts with a different dressing that was without honey, and also thought to warn us they used a shared fryer in case that was a concern for us). They told us they would adjust any meals from the vegetarian section if the menu (marked "farm") to make them vegan. We ended up getting the Brussels sprouts (with a different vinegarette) and plablano rellenos (without dairy items). They were both phenomenal. In addition they started us with free chips and salsa. Their salsa was great and so were their cocktails.
Downstairs: our waitress, Christina, to put it simply, was mean to us being vegan. It was Taco Tuesday (two tacos for $8). We called ahead to make sure that we could get the special vegan and they said we could. After waiting for about 20 min for a table (even though we had a reservation) we were informed that they ran out of the veggie tacos a few minutes before we ordered. We weren't annoyed by the wait or the fact that they ran out of tacos. We simply asked if we could get any other veggie tacos for the same price as the special. At that point our waitress stopped talking to us until it was time for the check. We got our guacamole app from the kitchen, but the waitress took another 10 minutes to being us chips so we could eat it. The kitchen staff, instead of our waitress, also served us our tacos. The good news is that food was delicious, and every other person working there was very nice to us. Normally these things roll off my back but it was clear our treatment was due to asking for a vegan accommodation.
Overall: the food is great- not naturally vegan but they know what vegan means and the kitchen will accommodate you. Given my experiences here I say give it a try and if your server isn't making it easy on you just ask for another server (Zack was the best!) because they are able and willing to accommodate.

Read moreThe girl on the phone wasn't sure what vegan options they had so she checked with the kitchen and called us back. She told us they had a rice with bean bowl they could make with no cheese. We ended up ordering, just that for takeout. When we got back to the hotel they had put sour cream on top. We specifically Alex for strictly vegan. I'm guessing they don't know the difference between vegetarian and vegan. If would have been good if they didn't mess up our order. Just make sure to insure them that vegan dishes are no animal product including sour cream.....

My wife and I came today for taco Tuesday. We both ordered the vegetarian tacos without cheese. We both found them to be completely flavourless and very dry. Easily the most tasteless food we ate on the island of Kauai. I would recommend going elsewhere.
