True Cantonese Cuisine in Authentic Setting

Three Virtues offers an honest version of the true Cantonese (Hong Kong) Cuisine in a truly Chinese traditional setting. The selection is excellent, the presentation lovely, and the taste - heavenly. Dining among the boisterous groups of families is an experience worth having on its own. Dim Sum, a typical Cantonese breakfast/lunch dish, are served at lunch. Prices are reasonable and dishes are meant for sharing. A satisfying meal for a couple would cost HKD 125.

While this cuisine has become so popular as to represent for many what what "Chinese food" means, it is sometimes inaccessible to vegetarians and vegans due to its heavy reliance on animal-based products. In the grand tradition of Buddhist dining, Three Virtues does away with most animal foodstuff and renders faithful Cantonese dishes using mock meats, fish and shellfish products. Nothing on the menu contains any of these products, and the occasional dishes that include eggs are clearly marked.

Menu in Roman letters with sometimes amusing English translation is available. The stuff speak little but Cantonese, but the friendliness of the servers (and fellow diners) helps overcoming any language barriers.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of a nondescript building, a short walking distance from North Point station. The entrance is recognizable by the food stall located on the street level. Three Virtues is one flight of stairs up.

Pros: Selection, Presentation, Friendliness

Cons: Only for those who seek authenticity

Nice food

I only tried a soup and mushroom/tofu clay pot but they were both nice, not too heavy with light flavours which is what I wanted

Good food, difficult if you don’t speak Cantonese

The food itself was delicious, good portions and variety, but none of the staff spoke English so it was a bit tricky. The menu did have English on it though. To order you fill out the pink slip they hand you with the number assigned to the dish you want (from the menu). To pay you go to the counter on the side with your slip. Recommend the peach sweet and sour dish and the cha siu. The “satay” wasn’t actually satay sauce.

Pros: Taste

Cons: Poor communication , Satay wasn’t actually satay

Friendly, helpful staff!

Some staff spoke English and the menu is in English with many pictures too. Lots of mock meats, including seafood. The to-go kiosk is on the ground but go up escalators to restaurant. Vegan items not clearly marked.

Pros: Great staff, Provide water to rinse dishes before use :)

Cons: Vegan items not clearly marked

Fantastic restaurant, one of the highlights of our HK trip!

Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. We had copious dim sum, and came back for a second meal. We then bought extra to take home! Delicious cuisine, and while not entirely vegan, there are lots of vegan options, and we had no issues communicating our needs in English.

Pros: Rice noodles with prawn and zucchini , Omnipork-stuffed, fried eggplant, Fried rice

Hongkong Chinese local

Seems like a restaurant only visited by locals. It’s huge inside the center on 4th floor and not to miss once going up.
Very traditional style of food and decor. Very bustling and loud, but has charm that way. Waitress always busy so you need to make them aware where you are (think that’s generally normal here anyway). 10% service charge added to bill. Menu without English translation and not pictures. Google translate helps.
Dishes are perfect for sharing.
We ordered three for two people which was definitely more than enough.
8317) pepper 95$ fish
8201) meat bowl
8313) sweet and sour peach monkey mushrooms
Lots of food! Meat bowl I’d definitely order again all differently marinated and great value
Sweet and sour was really sweet and heavy, but nice with crunchy pepper and the peaches turned out to fit well
Fish also good and crunchy outside. Sauce seemed similar to the sweet and sour though. Was hoping for more spices than sugar

Tea is available upon request (I think non complimentary ) also some peanuts

Went here cause other restaurant was closed on holidays.
Overall good, but wouldn’t say I have to go again!

Pros: Transitional setting , Fish 8317 and meat bowl 8201, Huge portions

Cons: No wifi or English menu or pictures , Very sweet style of cooking (which is normal?)

Unspectacular Dim Sum That Does Just About Enough

We ordered a number of dim sum dishes and were surprised by how affordable they were and how large the portions were. Technically, everything was prepared was rather well, if a little subdued when it came to the flavours expected. It was tasty but almost overly-filling for what we ordered.

The interior of this branch is definitely on the shabby side and not in-keeping with the intended style of the restaurant in terms of his service and how staff are presented. It could do with a bit of sprucing up.

An issue we did have was being seated right next to where the service team were stacking empty plates to prepare for washing and they certainly did not make any effort to do this quietly, in fact, they almost seemed to go out of their way to make as much noise as possible! There were other tables available, so surprised we were seated there but, even if there weren't, more awareness of their diners would've been welcomed.

Would like to go back to try some more of the menu, but as far as solely dim sum goes, it's an adequate fix rather than something to go out of your way for.

Pros: Portion Size Is Unusually Huge., Affordable Menu Options. Very Filling.

Cons: Interior And Service Are Lacklustre., Flavours Are A Bit Lacking., Not A Very "Special" Dining Experience.

Delicious food, friendly service

I tried to eat at Light Vegetarian (across the street). See my review of Light for that weird experience. Came across to Three Virtues and had a delicious lunch and encountered friendly service. Highly recommended.

Pros: Delicious, Friendly, Inexpensive

Cons: Apparently no napkins (I asked and was told no)

Dim Sum anyone?

One of my favourite places for vegan dim sum. We always made sure to come every time we visited. Now that we live here, this place is on our rotation. Authentic and not too greasy. If you're in a hurry, try out their little takeaway counter down on ground level. I find myself picking up some delights every now and then for dinner at home.

Amazing!!

Absolutely amazing. Huge menu selection, wonderful waitstaff, easy location, great prices, delicious food. There were no negatives to this experience. 100% recommend to anyone, vegan or not, traveling to Hong Kong.

The pineapple fried rice was a favorite. Very clever using the pineapple shell as the dish.

Sunday dim sum

Perfect for Sunday dim sum. English menu available. Service is quick and the restaurant is always busy!

I always order the usual suspects when it comes to dim sum- rice rolls with that lovely slightly sweet soy sauce, sticky rice wrapped in a leaf, plenty of dumplings and some nice shredded turnip pastries.

Wide variety of dim sum dishes

A rather traditional restaurant - we came for dim sum. Everything was tasty but they left something to desire texture-wise. Overall a good experience though, and it satisfies a craving.

Very good vegetarian food

Not vegan. They serve food without garlic and onion but may contain eggs. Only drawback is the staff mostly speaks Chinese so could be difficult to communicate exactly what you want if you don't know Chinese. Otherwise, it's one of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong. The variety of dishes would amaze you and you'd have a hard time deciding what you want!
