Overpriced slop

very devastating to lose yet another fully vegan spot in seattle but the food quality had declined anyway with the new owners. the ethics and values declined and then fully disappeared too! boooo! after 20 years of being a vegan community staple! it’s labeled as a vegan restaurant on google still which is INCORRECT! they now serve animals! now nothing makes this place stand out. i will not be returning

Pros: Nothing

Was fully vegan, then added meat

Same fate as Lazy Cow. Will never support a place that goes from kindness to cruelty for profit.

Don't piss off the vegans!

Disappointed to hear that the owners decided to add meat to the menu. I could possibly understand vegetarian but why would you go full on meat?
With that said, they offer a full vegan menu (as the default) and since my husband and son are non vegs they for a separate menu.
I ate the Albuquerque wrap which was delicious! I would highly recommend it. It does come with a side of fries but the friendly server brought me a side of fruit.
Perhaps if more vegans ate here they would take the meat off the menu?

What a bummer

Last month someone recommended I go here and in the meantime it became a non-vegan restaurant.

Best spot in Seattle

So many different options and everything was perfect and tasted amazing. Do not pass up an opportunity to dine here. Couldn’t leave five because app won’t let me.

No longer vegan

Claims to serve animal meat now to be more "inclusive". Luckily the AI slop videos on repeat and the too-loud music music haven't changed. 😒

Pros: Used to be vegan

Cons: No longer vegan, Unsettling AI slop videos on repeat, Loud kitchen music makes it difficult to converse

RIP Wayward Vegan

No longer fully vegan and besides, they replaced all of the homemade stuff with impossible and just egg even before this shocking change. Such a sad end to one of the city’s longtime vegan mainstays.

Announced They're No Longer Vegan

Wayward Vegan is changing to Wayward Cafe and will no longer be a vegan restaurant. I can no longer endorse them.

Not vegan

It's taken me a while to write this review because I'm so mad. But they just sent me a marketing email targeting vegans so I'm riled up again.

The Wayward Vegan Cafe isn't vegan anymore, and they weren't obvious about the change. The logo just quietly changed to The Wayward Cafe, and animal products were added to the online menu. I only found out as I was putting in my online pickup order, and my partner stopped me because he had seen the online backlash already.

I'm allergic to dairy and eggs. Not only is adding animal products a huge f*** you to the community, but the way they went about it was literally dangerous. I had no idea my allergens were on the menu and cross contamination is a huge issue for me. I don't exactly think to research a *vegan* cafe I've been coming to for years before ordering.

They have at least updated their online menu to differentiate "plant based" from "non vegan" now, but you still have to scroll to the bottom of the menu to realize they've added animal products. I think I'd be less mad if they had done a full re-branding with a totally new name and logo, vs this subtle change that could literally kill someone with surprise allergens (and does support the killing and exploitation of animals).

EDIT: As of 05.12.26 they're still sending out emails from "The Wayward Vegan" with their old vegan logo, despite animal products remaining on their menu.

I’m also allergic to diary and eggs and am supremely pissed! They shouldn’t even use the word Wayward in their name because they leveraged/used the vegan community and then threw us the middle finger.
I don’t usually hope restaurants go out of business but I hope they do

No Longer Vegan, Poor Service

The last time I went here the service was horrible, the food quality was poor, and worst of all, they are no longer vegan. Do not support this restaurant

Ehhh

Good service. Efficient, friendly.
Decidedly mediocre food.

Also the atmosphere is… way off. Exploitative, even; a cafe run by non-vegans but playing videos of happy bunnies on a big screen like vegan is just an aesthetic to market to. Hope I’m mischaracterising what’s going on here since it was taken over by new management, but I reckon I’m not wrong.

Edit 1 year later: made the mistake of giving it another chance but I agree with my 2023 self. Food was worse if anything, profoundly flavorless and unseasoned.

Edit 2 years later: well well well the exploitative vibes were right, look who’s just another meaty place now…

Every visit and take out meals use to be pleasant and delicious. Use to be one of the best vegan breakfasts around. There were so many tasty items. New owners do not understand the history and importance of this place being fully vegan, so sad.

Not vegan and bland food

The new owners really fell off when it was vegan. The fettuccine tasted like bland gelatinous goo and then they switch over to not being vegan. Sad what they became and you couldn’t pay me to eat there

This was one of my favorite restaurants back before Covid. The food and service has been weird, bad, and expensive since the new ownership. Now it’s not even a vegan restaurant.

Utter sadness

We ate here in February when we were visiting Seattle. It was incredible. We had it at the top of our list of go to vegan restaurants for every time we come back to Seattle. Couldn't wait for the next visit. Now I log on to give it a great review, and I see the sad news that they are no longer vegan. Unfortunately, have to join all of the one star reviews. Even without living in Seattle, I can tell if this is a huge blow to the vegan community there. Looking at their menu online, I see that they still have a huge amount of plant-based offerings. So I'm sure this is still a great place to go. The one star is for losing their ethical compass, which is important to me in my dining choices as an ethical vegan.

Pros: Fantastic food, Mini plant-based choices, Great, atmosphere and service

Cons: Loss of status as a vegan haven, Decision to offer animal products, and animal meat

No Longer Vegan

I used to always get food from here when in Green Lake. Not only are they no longer vegan, they have copy and pasted AI written responses to guests’ concerns and then turned off comments on social media. Not only will I not be going there any longer, I will discourage everyone I know from eating there. Disappointing to say the least.

Used to be my fav breakfast spot

Sad to see *another Seattle* spot rug pull switching from all vegan to serving meat and dairy. Will be missed. I hear there are still a number of vegan options but don't be fooled by the ratings on happy cow - it's all from when they were fully plant based.

As others have said, this place had a long history of being vegan and even when the food quality started to change it was nice to have them around. Now there’s really no point to even pretending it’s the same place.

They also deleted all the negative reviews about them from Google 🤡
