Not Good - Edit
I'm sorry to say (really) that this has been my worst meal in Vietnam. It's especially unfortunate because this is one of the only *vegan* restaurants (as opposed to "vegetarian", whatever that means anymore).
Read moreThe best thing I can say about this food is that it took me back to memories of my old middle school days eating in the school cafeteria. The same sensation of sucking down the food like medicine, rather than enjoying it, was constant throughout my meal. It was the first and only restaurant I ever left food on the plate in Vietnam. I pretended to be sick and just paid my bill and left.
The tomato sauce was just sour ketchup, the mushrooms were slimy and tough, the sauces all seemed like thy came from a can at a discount food pantry, the tofu was disturbingly pink in colour and other-worldly in texture, and the rice tasted like instant box rice. There's not one good thing I can say about the food at Halo, and I really wish that were an exaggeration. I hate to speak ill when they are trying to do the right thing, but they are so far off the mark I can't even pretend.
Pros: Quiet
Cons: Taste, Quality, Freshness

Weird atmosphere and couldn't get enough food! - Edit
We went to Halo because it was close to where we were staying and had good reviews. We ordered 3 dishes and for some reason only two dishes came out. The lady who had taken our order disappeared. After finishing the two dishes we decided we were still hungry so we ordered two rice hot pots. I even used two fingers to show that we wanted two. Anyway, only one came out and we were unable to communicate the issue to the lady who was both serving and cooking.
Read moreWe had heard that they did tasty vegan deserts so asked about them and the lady just shook her head. We have up at that point and paid the bill and left still feeling hungry.
Pros: Plenty of vegan options
Cons: Unable to get enough food , Staff not friendly or welcoming

Nice food but communication was difficult - Edit
I came there for a late lunch. I ordered 1 fresh spring roll but got 3 instead. When I tried to explain to the lady her mistake, she was first confused but then said "ok" so I thought she was offereing me the 2 extra ones but I actually had to pay for them all... They were very good though so no regrets. ^^
Read moreI also had the claypot rice which was quite nice. The desserts on the menu weren't available so I had a lotus seed milk which tasted like melted ice cream!
Pros: Service was quick
Cons: Communication was difficult

Delicious food - Edit
Friendly staff who speak some English, and some wonderful dishes. The grilled 'chicken' with dumplings is a must, it was so good that we got an extra portion to take away for later. They don't do coffee but seem to have a relationship with the coffee shop over the road, so not only did they get us coffee but they added their own rice milk to mine, and it was the best coffee I've had in Vietnam so far. It was constantly busy whilst we were here but the food still came out in reasonable time. Would defo recommend!

Good food - Edit
I liked the food even though you don't really know what you order. It might be helpful if you have internet access and translate some of the items on the menu. I'm not a big fan of mockmeats and ended up with quite a lot of it but overall the food was really good. Loved the soup.

Nice and Casual Place - Edit
I have been eating here a lot of times for lunch. Price is quite cheap and the food is of good quality. Staff is nice and there is a good selection of nice drinks.
Read moreYou have 2 options:
- The vegan buffet where you can choose your selection of dishes. You can choose 3/4 types for the standard price.
-A la carte with meals around 30k VND
It is a favorite for vietnamese and expats workers so it is very crowded during lunchtime. Other times it's empty, I was pretty much the only customer with my friend outside lunch hours.
Pros: Good price, Quality food, Location

A must! - Edit
Halo really took me by surprise. It's definitely one of my favorite vegan restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City! I really wanted to go because I read on Happy Cow that they had vegan ice cream. I ended up going to Halo on my last day and boy was I thrilled!
Read moreThe interior is really basic, they have small wooden chairs and the walls are decorated with famous vegans and their drinks menu. I am a huge fan of low-key vegan restaurants. For me, it's all about the food, and the food at Halo is incredible!
Most mains (except hot pot) are around 40,000 VND which I would consider fairly reasonable. The menu consists of noodle dishes, soups, rice dishes, vegetable dishes and heaps more. They have such a great variety of dishes! If you are not a fan of mock meat, then Halo is a great choice. Although mock meat is in quite a few dishes, they have just as many without it.
The best part? They also have vegan ice cream made out of coconut milk for 15,000 VND! If you want to try a particular one, make sure to pop in and ask if they are going to have what you are looking for.
They have such a huge menu that it took me a while to decide what I wanted. I ended up getting the Claypot Rice for 40,000 VND and absolutely loved it. My man got the same dish and my friend went with spring rolls. The Claypot Rice was one of my favorite dishes while staying in Ho Chi Minh City and I highly recommend trying it!
I also couldn't resist and tried their Coconut Ice Cream for 15,000 VND. It had a really subtle flavor and I absolutely loved it! If you are a lover of subtle, not overly sweet ice cream, definitely give it a try.
If you love great food, a low-key atmosphere, and reasonable prices then Halo, a vegan restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, is your place. If I would have gone to Halo earlier I would have come back almost every day. Yes, it was that good!
Pros: Vegan ice cream, Great prices, Try the claypot rice!

Decent, casual spot - Edit
I came in for an early breakfast this morning. I was hoping to get a Bun Moc Chay, but they didn’t have it, so I settled for a Mi Quang Da Lat. I’ve never had this dish before. It came with bits of jackfruit in the soup, which was unexpected. Overall, the soup was good, but not as outstanding as some of the others I’ve had in HCMC these past couple days.

Decent, local food - Edit
Large menu of all vegan food with basic English translation. My satay noodles didn't taste like satay but were still nice. There was a tiny buffet set up near the entrance for rice plates but it looked a little sad and limp. The place wasn't overly clean or busy but the food was cooked fresh. Okay if you're in the area.

Absolutely must try for a vegetarian - Edit
I have been in Ho Chi Minh for a month now. Just near my place I stay is this small vegetarian restaurant. The place is clean and serve a basic but wonderful vegetarian lunch and noodle soup dishes at night. I have been here like numerous time when I want to have a healthy food. The lunch is a buffet style with numerous offering of about 15 dishes. You can pick or the lady will choose for you. Not much mock meat, but lots of vegetables, tofu and mushrooms. It comes with a bowl of soup for only 25,000d. At night they have numerous noodle dishes that can be order, portion is small but is fresh and tasty.
Read morePro: Clean, cheap, and taste healthy. Yes, they grill some of their vegatables so not oily.
Con : Place is small and no english menu

Great com van phong - Edit
Rice plates are very good; the options change a bit from day to day, and in my many visits, I've yet to be disappointed. Braised jackfruit, stuffed bitter melon, and sauteed chayote squash have been outstanding. They don't use a lot of mock meats but they do use a lot mushrooms, which I'm glad for since I'm very picky about mock meat. Southern Vietnamese food tends to be on the sweet side, but not so here. They have daily noodle soup specials, a couple of which are not common at other veg. restaurants around town (bun moc, for example). They also do hot pots and have an extensive menu of the usual a la carte Vietnamese food fare.
Read morePros: Food tasty and not too sweet, Decently priced
Cons: No A/C, Can get very crowded
