Ate here twice, both times a bit dissapointing.
Read more1st time was not so tastefull.
2nd time I ordered a ''proeverij'' that would give me a bit of everything. It mostly were dips with some bread and soup. More lunch like, than dinner. I expected various dishes from the dinner menu.
Desserts have been realy nice though :D

Unexpected gem! - Edit
Came for a chill coffee place and found a gem of a vegan lunch spot! Really enjoyed a good coffee and a the extensive plant based lunch menu, it was difficult to choose! The fried cauliflower bowl was absolutely delicious, so was the side of fries, and great service!

Definitely recommend this restaurant! We had the shared 6 course menu and we loved every single one of them (except the brussel sprouts, they were very uninteresting compared to all the rest).

Fully vegan sharing menu, every dish was incredible. Seasonal ingredients cooked to perfection make for complex flavours and interesting texture combinations. In all the years of being vegan, it's one of the best experiences I've had.

Our party of three had a nice time, but there's definitely room for improvement. Gys Voorstraat was packed on this Saturday, but not too loud/rowdy. Good coffee and drinks. Biggest downside is the value for money. Gys is not too expensive until you see the portion size. One of us had the fried cauliflower bowl, which was just a handful with some garnish. For 19 euros! I had the fried oyster mushrooms, which had been in the fryer a bit too long (lot of crisp, relatively little taste) and also serving size was not too generous. I walked by the kitchen later and saw the same dish with a double serving, so perhaps it's a matter of chance how generous your portion is. So despite Gys' menu being great for vegans, Gys will not my first choice next time I visit Utrecht.

The food itself was absolutely delicious and looks really good, but I was a bit disappointed by the portion size. I need to eat twice the amount to be full from only plant based food. I was still hungry even after a ‘big’ plate and a desert.
It’s nice if you expect some more fine dining experience, also with the prices that go with it, but I remembered kapsalon and fancy hotdogs from a few years ago and that’s now gone.

I used to love this place, but the food has become less tasty in the last ~3 years. E.g. their kapsalon, shakshuka and Ruffle my truffle sandwich have become less good. On the other hand, their pastries are usually tasty: I really enjoyed their cheesecakes, pumpkin cake and lemon/poppyseed cake. They also have a breakfast platter that is great value for your money.

I actually wanted the cauliflower bites but they were out of it, soo unfortunate.
Or... maybe not? The mushrooms were SAUR good. Perfect. Crisp. Flavourful. Amazing sauce. 10/10
The orzo was a liiittle boring but I really wanted orzo in general so I went with it. The artichokes didn't have any taste but the tomato sauce actually had flavour. The dish also isn't as watery as it may look here.
Staff is very kind and patient!

Read moreThe fries were fluffy and crispy, the mushrooms were nice and crispy as well, and also the bread was really good considering that it's gluten free.
The menu is all gluten free and vegan, except for some optional add-ons (e.g. you can get some of the sandwiches with eggs, or dairy milk with hot drinks) where it's clear they're not.
Forgot to take a picture but looked really nice as well.
A bit pricey but still ok, especially considering what you usually have to pay for gluten free food.

We had the shared dining which included 4 small plates per person. So each person gets to choose 4 options so you get 8 different plates (we were confused at first).

I must say that I loved all of them, one more than the other, which is normal. And beautifully presented!
But it was a lot! We couldn't finish eveything, we were stuffed!
So unfortunately there was no room for dessert 🥺 The options looked great though. Guess I'll have to go back some day!

Had a very nice dinner at Gys. The food was great and you can see it’s good quality. There are a number of small plates and a few main ones. Just be aware that it’s on the pricier end of things and there’s not a massive selection of mains (which is also good as they make things fresh).

Gisteren gegeten bij Gys, Voorstraat 77 in Utrecht. Een hele fijne zaak. De locatie is in het centrum van Utrecht, 15 minuten lopen vanaf het station. De zaak heeft een fijne sfeer, het personeel is attent en vriendelijk. Ik voelde me er direct helemaal thuis, ook omdat ze dezelfde normen en waarden t.a.v. voedsel hebben als ik; zoveel mogelijk plantaardig en lokaal. Mijn vriendin eet glutenvrij. Zij kon dus alles eten, hoefde nergens over na te denken. Ik vond de kwaliteit van de gerechten heel goed en de prijs schappelijk. Echt een aanrader dus!

Heerlijk 6 kerstdiner gehad op kerstavond met veel variatie en groenten uit het seizoen. Gezellige sfeer en zeer vriendelijke bediening. Bijpassende alcohol vrije cocktails en drankjes maakte het feest compleet.

First off, the vibe at Gys is wonderful. It's very bright and cozy and the service was exceptional. It did get quite loud at times, but that can happen anywhere.
Read moreThe food options all looked lovely and I like the way they choose one Veggie as the centrepiece for the meal. We ended up having the Satay and were very happy with our choice.
However, I must say this place was well out of our typical price range, everything they have is very expensive and even though the food was good, it wasn't exceptional, nor was it a particularly big portion. Leaving us wondering whether it was worth it.
Definitely did enjoy our time there and had a lovely evening. But I personally wouldn't go there again.

Zoals altijd, op beide locaties, een aanrader en dat is wat ik dan ook graag doe: aanraden. Het maakt niet uit wat je bestelt, alles is geweldig en opvallend vind ik dat er altijd smaken zijn die ik niet of nauwelijks ken. Het ziet er ook nog eens fantastisch uit.
