Yum vegan lunch and dinner in Utrecht! - Edit
Gys is one of my fave plant-based restaurant in Utrecht - it is 98% vegan and it's great!

A must try when you're in Utrecht and want to eat plant-based.
Oh and they also do everything gluten-free! Also their cakes and desserts!

Delicious food, but very cramped and noisy - Edit
We were here for a late lunch. It was packed.
Read moreWanted to order the scramble eggs (vegan possible) but was not available.
Had the club sandwich (13,5€), ruffle my truffle sandwich (11,5€). We also ordered some snacks (borrel): the cauliflower wings (9,5€) and the onion rings (9,5€).
We thought the snacks were just going to be a small side dish, but when everything came, it seemed they were a fairly large portion!! So ordered way too much food ...
The food was delicious! Great sandwiches.
Only minus were the cauliflower wings, which had a very hard crust.
Everything is vegan, except for the scrambled eggs (why not just standardly make it with scrambled tofu, so then it is a vegan restaurant?).
Accessibility: small step to get in. Restaurant room on ground floor, but very cramped, tables very closely together. Didnt see an accessible toilet.
And with so many people inside, it was also very loud, could hardly have a conversation. And a bit dark too.
All in all: delicious food, friendly service, but too cramped and noisy.

5* - Great Vegan food at any time of the day - Edit
I'm a fan of Gys! I've been going there quite often whenever I'm in Utrecht. Actually my first visit ever was to their other location, but I'm yet to review that one (it's in the queue) and I'll start to this one as I've been there more often.
Read moreI love it. I love both the breakfast menu and the dinner menu. I also really like the drinks.. so it's hard for me to find any negatives here, maybe just a couple of points to improve.
First let me start with the breakfast there.. everything I tried (the tofu scramble, the club sandwich, the pancakes and the carrot cake..) was delicious, really nothing to say here. Their OJ is also quite fresh and the latte's and hot chocolate are also quite tasty.
For the dinner menu, I tried some starters like the beet tartar, and it was also really good, and some mains like the 5 ways of cauliflower (awesome), the Kapsalon (was good, but not awesome, could be a bit tastier) and the Mushroom steak (was good, but probably my least fav so far).
As for the desserts, I've tried the Carrot Cake (amazing), Bananas! (amazing) and Arabian Nights (also quite good).
I still have many dishes to try until I have eaten the whole menu, but I will get there.
I definitely recommend Gys to any vegan in town.
P.S. - One of the times there was also a cat visitor, loved it.
Update after 2 more visits: Uploaded a lot more pictures and I'm still totally in love with Gys, especially on breakfast/lunch. Tried a few more dishes and the hugeee starters platter... all amazing. Also tried the main dish I was missing, the Saté.. it's probably one of my favorites and it's quite good, but still I find it's not at the same level as the starters and snacks. Also my friends surprised me with a candle on the cake for my birthday, it's really sweet that the restaurant was able to provide for that. The cauliflower, what one of the people who was with me said was "There's one of the five ways that is wayyy more delicious then the others, but unfortunately there was only one piece of that one".. maybe this can also be taken in consideration for the future.
I also need to say something about their fries... they are very very good fries.. I'm glad I live far away otherwise I would risk eating them every day!

Read moreUpdate 1/8/22: had lunch at Gys today. It was delicious. The menu was so extensive that I could hardly choose, but in the end I chose the Jacket potato club and the Indian Onion Rings with a Flat White and some lemonade with sage. The food was well flavored and in my second coffee I even got a heart as Latte Art. My day couldn't get any better.
The staff were very sweet and attentive. Even the cook came to ask how the food was. And when I had to go to the toilet, the appealing waitress even wanted to look after my dog. Very cute! All in all, Gys is highly recommended and I will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.

Only recently discovered that the New (post Covid) menu is more focussed on Fine Dining, it is delicious! I have no idea how Gys prepared some of the elements of our meals, but they were impressive and delicious.

The dessert was one of their highlights (and personally one of mine too, with the 'Rose 🌹 Ice cream / sorbet' as an unforgettable sensation, yummy !

Gys might be one of my favorite vegan & gluten-free restaurants in town. The food is always fresh, delicious and looks absolutely amazing. Everything is made from scratch so you are guaranteed wholesome food. Unfortunately, Gys is a little bit expensive but considering the food is organic and all that, I do understand. And, depending on the dish, the portions vary in size. Which, sometimes, feels a bit odd considering the amount of money you have to pay.

Ik heb verschillende keren bij Gys gegeten of besteld. Het voelt altijd een klein beetje als een iets minder dodelijk potje Russisch roulette. 9/10 keer krijg je heerlijk eten en ben je super tevreden, en die ene keer stelt het echt teleur. Ook is er soms behoorlijk kwaliteitsverschil tussen de elementen op het bord.

Goed dat je dit dus ook aangeeft! Superleuk om te lezen dat je zo ontzettend enthousiast bent over de shroom steak. Dankjewel dat je ook laat weten dat de shroom steak iets meer diepte mag. Wel kunnen we je vertellen dat we sinds eind april een stuk meer ervaring op hebben gedaan met het bereiden van de shroom steak dus dat ie waarschijnlijk tegenwoordig wel minder taai en meer diepte heeft. Hopelijk mogen we je snel weer bij GYS verwelkomen om de shroom steak, of iets anders lekkers te serveren! Nogmaals, super bedankt voor de opbouwende en eerlijke feedback. Hier kunnen we namelijk zeker wat mee!

Maybe I’m just not used to being in a busy and loud environment anymore but when we arrived at GYS it was absolutely packed. The food and drinks were really good though! We had raspberry lemonade, buffalo wings, vegan kapsalon and a snickers dessert. The staff was very friendly and we got our food quite fast even though it was so busy.
