Gys is definitely my favorite restaurant in Utrecht. They became fully vegan and their dishes are truly delicious and creative. They change the dishes often so that you can be surprised by a new dish every time. Not unimportant: the staff is incredibly friendly and genuinely interested in their customers. I had the ‘Ruffle My Truffle’ with fries on the side, plus a rabarber grapefruit lemonade, and all of it was so good! Slightly pricy food, but worth it, you get a lot as well. Nice restaurant, will definitely return😄

Balanced in flavors, nice plating - Edit
Gys was on our waitlist for a while. Unfortunately it was one of the hottest days and it was also very hot inside. The restaurant is clean, decorated in Danish style furniture which makes it a modern but also clean casual look.

The leek dish had great flavors, but with the raw cauliflower and stringy leek not all pleasant structures. The beet crumble appetizer was great, balanced in structure and flavors.
Main dishes we had were the kapsalon, which was good and the mushroom steak that was great as well. We had a side salad which was good as well.
As a non alcoholic I had the rhubarb pear shake, which was awesome.
Waitress asked if the music was too loud when we were seated. This is something that is usually not asked, but much appreciated as it was. Music choice happened to be what is on my playlist. Interesting choice.
Waitress/waiters were friendly and as said thoughtful, though at some times they were chatting which each other and unintended seem to forget some guests inside the restaurant to bring drinks. Though serving the food was pretty quick.

Next level food experience - Edit
We were a little group of 4 and shared 2 starters, 4 main dishes and 2 desserts. The whole experience was next level regarding the differently tasting components and ingredients. The staff was super friendly, offered water for our dog and refilled it later in the evening. It was totally worth waiting a few more minutes for our plates than usual. When it got colder outside, they even brought blankets for us. :)

Bit pricey, but very worth it - Edit
With dinner being around 20 euro per portion and drinks 4-5 euro, it's a bit above my budget. But, I would rather spend a bit more for a unique dish with lots of flavours than something basic that I could cook myself. We had the shroom steak and italian with a twist and both were delicious, I love their combination of ingrediënts. I just wish there was a bit more, even though the portion is reasonable. I also love that it's all organic and sustainably and ethically sourced. They also have some small projects like repurposing their food waste through another company.

This is a great restaurant in Utrecht with an almost all-vegan menu. I’ve had lunch here twice and both times the food has been great, friendly staff and the restaurant at the Voorstraat looks very pretty as well. The food is a bit pricy but worth it!

The Dirty Chai, lemonades and coffees I’ve had are yummy as well! Improvements to be made: don’t offer cows milk and eggs anymore - then it would be 5 ⭐️

The latest evolution of Gys is more than recommended! - Edit
From flexitarian, to vegetarian to now almost completely vegan, Gys made a remarkable journey towards plant-based eating over the years. Can't wait for them to also ditch the egg scramble and only serve the eggless one (I guess it will happen one day).
Read moreThe current menu is full of mostly whole food plant-based choices that are a real culinary experience and beautifully presented. Quite a difference from the original comfort food they started with years ago (which I also appreciated).
The newly refurbished restaurant has much improved and better fits their current concept.
I will for sure visit again!

My absolute favorite in Utrecht! - Edit
By now the restaurant/cafe is entirely vegan, so the options are vast. I‘d recommen coming for brunch/lunch as I think the dinner is a bit expensive for the portion size. But oh well, the taste is great! This is my absolute favorite in Utrecht, I come here so often and love eveything on the menu. They just renovated both their shops and added a few new things to the menu - amazing as well ofc. Vibes are great, coffee very good and also the staff super nice. Highly highly recommend trying this one!

I got the seasonal cheesecake to-go. The website stated that it’d be a pumpkin white chocolate cheesecake which I was very excited for, but they handed me your typical red fruit cheesecake. The taste was there (though a couple of bites tasted like it had touched something savoury), but was very dry. I needed to add a lot of whipped cream and my own fruit to get through it. The portion size is decent, but that’s only fair considering the price (€6!). I haven’t been here for lunch or dinner and everything I saw in the restaurant looked delicious, but this is my verdict considering the dessert section.

We had an High Tea! It was delicious. The taste was amazing. Because it's organic I really enjoyed it more. When I am back in Utrecht I really would like to go back, for High Tea or to try something else there. I give 4 stars, because I have had some other High Tea's and there they tell you wat kind of tea is good for wat kind of food. Here they didn't explain the kind of teas there were. After a while another waitress served us the second "plate" and she was really kind and enthousiast explaining the food etc.

I now tried this restaurant twice and the first time we were sitting between flies and the windows were all filled with steam and the food tasted from a few days back. The second time was the same dissappointment. I should not have repeated when the first time was so bad.
