North end Halifax Find.

Great vegan restaurant with gluten free items clearly marked. Great assortment of health food and healthy takes on more junk food style items.

One of the best in Halifax

En Vie is a great gourmet vegan restaurant. The food choices are great, backed by quality and taste. The staff is friendly and because it's so popular, you may have to wait a little to get a table if you don't have reservations. The donair tacos and macro dish are both delicious, but many other dishes are just as appealing. En Vie was a great experience for us and is one of our favorite restaurants in Halifax.

Pros: excellent food, friendly staff, nice vibe

Cons: small dessert menu

A special treat!

This place welcomes guests with an fresh vibe and open, airy feeling. We loved the cheese board/charcuterie options. You could make a meal out of the choices! Local beer and local produce are featured prominently on the menu. The highlight of our visit to Nova Scotia!

Pros: Fresh, local, Creative menu, Hand made artisanal vegan cheeses

Cons: expensive, but worth the splurge

All-around delicious!

Amazing little restaurant with a super cozy atmosphere and delicious food. They have a full menu complete with a charcuterie board (all of the cheeses were very delicious). I had to stop myself from ordering everything, as it all looked great. The food is a little on the pricier side, but I think well-worth the price for the taste and portion sizes.

The waitress was fairly friendly, and the service was prompt. There weren't a ton of places to sit, so I'm not sure how this place would be if it were busier. On the Friday evening we went, there wasn't any wait. They also had some takeaway options in a fridge by the cashier, and the wrap I had the next day was very good.

Definitely recommend checking this out!

Pros: Great food, Cosy atmosphere, Many choices

Cons: A little pricey, Not the most beautiful view

great food and staff

I came here based on the suggestion of the front desk staff at my hotel. The recommendation was a great one. I ordered the pesto chicken to go. It smelled fantastic and tasted even better. I highly recommend this place and I will be sure to come here next time I am in town.

They also had some grab and go options which is great, although my food came out quickly.

And, I should add, the two staff that I encountered that were working the day I went in, we're both very nice and very helpful. One even went out of her way to check on an ingredient in one of their products, ensuring there would be no problems. That above and beyond attitude was appreciated and a real pleasure.

Pros: very delicious, very friendly staff, wide variety of options

East Coast Vegan Feast

I had the pleasure of eating at Halifax's enVie with my brother & his family. What a treat! The entire menu is vegan, and extremely well done. There were plenty of non- vegans dining, and all were enjoying the food. I highly recommend this place if you're in town!

Vegan and GF

Loved En Vie...a lovely space and freindly staff. We had a lunch of Poutine...what is that? a local specialty of potato wedges with gravy and cheese...all vegan..and really yummy! Veggie burgers and Pad Thai...yum. I started with watermelon sushi and ended with Blueberry shortcake...with coconut whipped cream..to die for. We went back the following Monday, but it was closed... I had my most ready for more blueberry shortcake....too bad.

Go here if you are anywhere near Halifax..we came from the airport before continuing our trip around NS.

Pros: nice space, Quality fresh food, great chef

Cons: slightly pricey but hey...Loved every bite, Closed Sun and Mon!

Wow!

I was so impressed to find this restaurant in Halifax...one of my top fave vegan restaurants! The first time we went, I ordered two entrees instead of a main because I couldn't decide. I had the phish tacos and the kale caesar salad, with extra "oysters" on the side(made from king oyster mushrooms). Omg, so good!! The kale caesar had a wonderful dressing with generous amounts of hemp seeds and toasted coconut. My husband had the bacon double cheeseburger that came with truffled potato wedges(I stole one and they were perfectly crisp. I had also ordered the watermelon julep which was mixed with a really nice bourbon, very tasty! I also had the peanut butter pie that had a rich chocolate espresso top layer and a pretzel crust. Whoah, it was intense!

On our second visit, we went for brunch. I had an iced cappuccino, dumplings filled with tempeh, and the poutine. The dumplings were amazing, but I have to admit that the poutine was not my favourite. It didn't have these nice big curds that are in the photos here, and I found the potato wedges cut too big and not crispy enough...it didn't seem like the same type of potatoes that were used the in wedges that came with the burger on the previous visit, as these were dry and a bit crumbly. The gravy was really nice. On to my husband...he had the Benny, which was really tasty. it was made with tofu on polenta with a mustard sauce, perfectly sautéed asparagus, and potato wedges. We also ordered a side of the seitan bacon...so yummy! I ordered another kale caesar to take with my for our outing in the park later....it's really so good.

Pros: Creative dishes, Amazing kale salad, good cocktails

Cons: poutine was not my fave

Vegan Charcuterie Can't Be Missed

We tried to visit on Canada Day and they were closed (damned international cell phone plans) but are glad we went back the next day for an excellent dinner. The small dining room is nicely designed, the service attentive but a bit error-prone, and the food absolutely excellent. You can't beat the charcuterie platter (try the Gruyere spread and the pepperoni) or the chocolate peanut butter pie, though skip their coconut whip as it isn't really whipped.

Pros: vegan charcuterie

Cons: staff memories

Valentines Day

Visited En Vie for the first time this Valentines day for lunch and I enjoyed my meal greatly! The place was packed and I loved seeing so many people supporting not only a small local business but also a vegan lifestyle!!

I had the lentil and rice burger (on a lettuce bun) and loved the patty. The kale ceasar salad was very fresh tasting! The kind mushroom scallops were lacking the saltiness of seafood.

My bf had a wrap and a poutine and did not love it. His drink was not great either.

The service was friendly.

Will give this place another go for sure, but I have other vegan faves in town that still take the crown for now.

Happy eating! xx

Pros: Lentil Burger, Salad

Cons: Poutine, Flavourless wrap, Drink

It goes without saying....

Vegan restaurants are the easiest to be in when vegan, I am not used to having so many choices (you mean I can eat anything on the menu!! ^.^ ) It's a great place and the first one I recommend when people ask about trying vegan food or want to know what I survive on without cheese. The food is great and hopefully they will have a bigger kitchen soon (indiegogo campaign is underway) and be able to expand even further!

Seriously order anything off the menu, they don't have a bad option.

Pros: Food, Service

Cons: Small space

delicious vegan oasis

Ahh - to arrive at a vegan restaurant after a week of eating at non-veg places was a treasure. I just couldn't handle another meal of flatbread which was the only veg choice at most Halifax restaurants.

I ordered a "lobster" roll made out of a blend of portobello, lobster and button mushrooms. I loved it. The bread was very fresh and mushrooms delicious. It came with a side of poutine. It was very good. I also ordered a side of king mushroom scallops. They did look just like scallops and were good. I am a huge king oyster mushroom fanatic however and prefer them just lightly stir fried with a bit of soy sauce.

I bought a meal for the next day of a pulled jackfruit burrito. ($13). It was filled with black beans guacamole apple slaw and a sweet potato cream. It came with a side of steamed greens and a cheez sauce. It was delicious with lots of different flavors.

The restaurant itself is gorgeous and bright with rustic wooden floors and huge windows.

Pros: delicious vegan food, friendly service

Delicious Lunch

My husband and I went here for lunch during the week. I had the pulled jack burrito with kale salad and he had the lentil burger with poutine. The food was delicious and fresh. I couldn't finish my burrito since the portion was large for me. The dressing on the kale salad was fantastic. My husband enjoyed his first taste of vegan poutine made with onion gravy. (This meal came with a meal share charity option. 1 meal is donated to charity for every lentil burger purchased!) The lady who waited on our table may have been the owner since she mentioned that the red-headed man was her husband (often a husband-wife team aren't only waiters!) The restaurant was quite full for lunch. This made us happy to see so many people enjoying vegan food. Great place and highly recommended.

Pros: Delicous , Meal share program, Plenty of options and add ons

To come 3 times in a weeks vacation, it was good

enVie was the second vegetarian/vegan restaurant we tried on our visit to Halifax. It was so good we returned twice more. The food was excellent and Diandra & Cory (the owners) were excellent waiting at the tables, and very friendly and helpful. The good service was in spite of the restaurant being very full.

We enjoyed all the dishes we tried and found the prices reasonable.

Our only difficulty was that my wife has mobility problems and the restaurant was up three steps, but they showed us that we could get out on the level through the back and into the entrance of the shop next door. It is also not possible to park outside and one has to park further away and walk to the restaurant.

Halifax Is Fortunate To Have This Restaurant

My wife and I really enjoyed our meal at enVie. Yes, the restaurant is very clean with a friendly staff and relaxed bright atmosphere. However, the big reason we enjoyed our meal so much was that the food is GREAT. After having soup of the day, I had the Seitan Reuben and my wife had the Grilled Cheese and we both finished with Blueberry Cheesecake. We left well satisfied and will certainly return the next time we are in Halifax.

Pros: Fine Food, All the qualities you might expect

Third times the charm

Another Edit: Third times the charm, they've officially captured my admiration and love. My stomach loves the country breakfast. The staff are wonderful, so friendly and kind. The restaurant has such a wonderful atmosphere, lovely decor. It's just perfect.

Edit: Second time around, enVie has really surprised me. The tofu burger was delectable and so was the cranberry cheesecake. I had a lovely time at the veggie meetup and enVie contributed greatly to that. Thank you!

Let me start off by saying, I need to be honest, that's just who I am. I wanted to like enVie very much. When I heard the announcement of a new vegan restaurant opening in Halifax, I was, of course, thrilled. I want all vegan businesses to succeed (unless they are dishonest and not really vegan ;) yes I have been there). Promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle is the most important thing to me. So I still wish all the best to the sweet couple that owns and runs this beautiful restaurant.

Now onto the dirty stuff. Walking into enVie, I was enveloped by the beautiful decor, the warm atmosphere and friendly staff. I spent much time oogling over the adorable animal photos lining the walls and the fresh flowers on each table. The small touches are what mean the most. The menu is small, I notice this with many vegan restaurants. I am assuming it's a time thing and since they are a small business just starting out, it makes sense. I wasn't overjoyed by the choices by have been very intrigued by the many pictures I had seen of the mushroom scallops, so I went for that. My husband went for the daily special of the vegan cheeseboard.

The service was prompt. Our food arrived quickly and was presented very nicely. I was extremely excited to try my food but was disappointed that it was a mostly raw dish. Cold kelp "noodles" and veggies. The only warm part were the scallops, which I really loved. I did not, however, enjoy my kelp "noodles" which were a large portion of the dish. I wish I did, I really do but they just were not my taste. The texture was extremely unsettling and they also were not very flavorful. I was truly hoping for a hot meal on this cold rainy day. My husband did not mind the cheeseboard but found the portion size lacking for the price. Unfortunately, the cost is the kicker for both of us.

It's with a sad heart I have to say, I was not highly fond of the food at enVie. I still hope for the best for them and maybe I will be back to try some of the strawberry shortcake someday. :-)

Pros: All vegan, Great atmosphere, Friendly

One of my favorite places for dinner

I was first exposed to EnVie back when they were at the Alderney Landing market. They were doing a delivery service and I decided I had wanted in. The food was great so I couldn't wait for their restaurant to open.

When I first visited, I needed to give EnVie a second chance. The quinoa mushroom burger was unique and good, but it didn't sell me. Now the boyfriend and I can't get enough of this place.

The last few times I have visited, I was impressed with the food and the service was incredibly fast.

I tend to gravitate towards the kale caesar salad with coconut bacon and I always have to have dessert. They even have a vegan poutine complete with homemade "curds" that puts real poutine to shame.

The food is very high quality, but you don't get as much for the price. In order to leave full, I have to share an appetizer and order a dessert.

Edit: I attended one of their cooking classes (Vegetables of the Land and Sea!) They made several recipes, showed us some kitchen techniques and gave us a little lesson in nutrition. I have also attended their New Year's Eve dinner and Valentine's Day dinner and was not disappointed. Deidre always says hello when we come in. I love that :)

Not impressed

I was very excited for a new vegan restaurant to open up. The place was cute, but very white and sterile looking. Staff were friendly but not overly so. The menu was small and nothing stood out. Uncomfortable atmosphere - this isn't a place to hangout and have good food, but rather a place to be seen.

The food looked great, but there wasn't much food and it was expensive. We had dessert as well and it was gross. I was pretty disappointed and would not go back. I love vegan food but this place is so overly fancy and the food and service wasn't that amazing.

Pros: All vegan, Nice staff

Cons: Expensive, Stuck up atmosphere, Mediocre food

Ethical Delight!

We stopped by at this cozy, friendly vegan restaurant today for lunch and were so pleased we just had to write a review!

The ambiance was a nice balance of fresh and airy with welcoming comfort. We tried the trio of dips, the seitan donair and several desserts;all were fantastic. The flavours were fresh and imaginative and the dishes were artfully presented. The wine list was also impressive with an excellent selection of local beverages. The service was prompt and friendly.

There was obvious attention to detail everywhere: from fresh flowers to the careful combination of textures and flavours. The donair, for example was a delightful mix of warm pita and seitan with fresh and crispy shredded greens and sweet cherry tomatoes. The trio of dips were all so different and unique but together were spectacular; a perfect synergy of flavours. MMmmmmmmmm until next time!
