a gain for vegetarians but a loss for vegans - Edit
An omnivore, a vegetarian, and a vegan walked into all-vegetarian Kitchen & Coffee. The omnivore ordered the Rice Bowl, which contains cow milk yogurt. The vegetarian ordered the Harvest Bowl, which is vegan, marked V on the indoor signboard, but not on the online menu. And the vegan ordered the Sweet Potato Burger, also marked V indoors, again omitted online.
Read moreAll three meals were colorful and made of wholesome and nourishing ingredients, except for the gluten-free burger bun. Typical of GF breads, it was made of ultra-processed starches. All three enjoyed their meals.
That is how I began my review two years ago when K&C had temporarily relocated to 382 Main St while its original building was being renovated and expanded. Last fall, it returned to its original site at 420 Main St. Good news for vegetarians.
But bad news for vegans. The number of dishes that are vegan or can be veganized has markedly diminished. For instance, the Rice Bowl and the Harvest Bowl, my favorite, both have gone missing and were replaced with egg dishes. While cow milk yogurt or eggy mayo can be omitted from many dishes, no substitute is offered, so vegans get less for their money. Worse, the option of plant-based milk for coffee comes at an exorbitant surcharge.
Portions now seem smaller and the so-called salads that accompany some dishes are solely lettuce with a dressing. The Green Goddess Salad that formerly comprised many mixed garden veggies now is just lettuce with dressing. I’d accept that in a steak house in January, not in a vegetarian eatery in August at the height of the salad veggies harvest season. Call it, Green Godless Salad.
Both the interior and the outdoor deck of the renovated building remain just as crowded and cramped as was the temporary location. (All those malingerers at their laptops nursing a single cup of coffee.) And K&C formerly featured its own parking lot, an asset for downtown Beacon, but no longer.
Don’t forget its namesake, Coffee. The caffeine addict among us formerly praised it. But she says the coffee, too, has deteriorated in quality. Disappointments all around.
Pros: far fewer vegan options than before
Cons: very eggy

Delicious brunch and baked goods - Edit
The K&C avocado toast is my favorite food group. It’s that good. They also always have an assortment of yummy baked goods, sandwiches, and salads. They do serve eggs, but about half the menu is vegan (and clearly labeled).

Whole Food Fusión Diner experience - Edit
We enjoyed the tempeh Reuben and sweet potato burger options; both were veganized by removing sauces, etc.
Read moreService was excellent.
Parking is hard to find in Beacon; give it time.
Interior was noisy. We opted for the quieter patio out back.
Pros: Delicious food, Fresh food
Cons: Parking in Beacon is hard to find, Baked potatoes were dry and didn’t have much taste, Kitchen hours recently reduced.

Solid vegan options in Beacon - Edit
Whenever we find ourselves in beacon, we stop into Kitchen & Coffee for a meal, snack, or drink, whatever fits best into the plan for the day. Lots of bowls, salads, etc. that are either vegan or can be made vegan, all enjoyable.
Read moreYesterday, we cruised on in for cookies and coffee, before going for a walk through town and some window shopping. The vegan options were so good, we found ourselves back at Kitchen & Coffee later in the day, for a second round of coffee for the ride home.
One suggestion would be for our fine friends at Kitchen & Coffee to forgo the relatively expensive upcharge on non-dairy milks - after a couple drinks, it really adds to the bill. Opting for plant-based milk is important to many customers, for ethical, environmental, and also health reasons.
Kitchen & Coffee recently moved locations, and perhaps this added to the confusion, but unfortunately we had a finance bro-looking dude cut right in front of us in line and then get indignant on us (I’ve also been said to look finance bro-esque, so I’m comfortable making that assertion). Perhaps best to keep your wits about you in the entryway so as to avoid line cutting. Hope the dude enjoyed his coffee and non-vegan chocolate chip cookie. 😄

Cute and unique cafe - Edit
Such an adorable cafe in a great spot downtown with friendly staff.
Read moreTheir specialty lattes are delicious and I loved their tempeh reuben.
Some of the things in the bakery case were a miss like the galette (too dry/no flavor) but it could have been an off day. But the muffin and raspberry bar were both great.
I love how creative they get with their food and the amount of variety they have. You don't see vegan galettes everyday or fun-flavored muffins like cheddar scallion.
Pros: Unique, Fun variety, Good location

UPDATE: K&C HAS RELOCATED... - Edit
...or rather, RETURNED to where they started, at 418/420 Main Street, and they are better than ever! Most welcome is the additional seating (granted, I wasn't there at the height of the weekend brunch/lunch rush, but business was brisk, nonetheless.) As in the past, many of K&C's numerous Vegan options are healthful, including their soup, my pick of the day, along with a cup of hot sencha green tea - a perfect meal to enjoy as I watched the picturesque snowfall begin just outside the nearby window. Of course, I now look forward to enjoying future meals here, al fresco, once the snow is a distant memory and spring has sprung.

Went 7 times in 4 days - Edit
I know this might be weird but we went here 7 times in 4 days for coffees, snacks and breakfast. Great place with a lot of vegan options, gluten free, and friendly staff. Really nice interior with lots of plugs for laptops. Abundant outdoor seating on front and back patios. A great place to meet up with friends or knock out some emails.

A WINNER!! - Edit
What a gem of a find!
Read moreWe were looking for a good, fresh lunch to go, and ordered the Green Goddess Bowl & the Gimme The Tea Sandwich, and a couple VEGAN desserts (we’ve only tasted one so far) — AMAZING!
The Green Goddess Bowl had a variety of interesting & tasty greens — especially with the Citrus Sumac Vinaigrette dressing. And because this was a to-go dish, the creamy cashew puree was at the bottom — wish I’d found that earlier, and quinoa too. So many complex flavors — absolutely a delight to eat.
The only negative was that there was some spice in it that wasn’t to my liking, and that lingered afterwards. Wish I could identify it ‘cause I’d definitely order this again, minus that spice.
The sandwich (not sure what the name means) would have been better AT the store. By the time we ate it (~3 hrs later), the focaccia was soggy & fell apart under tomatoes and dressing. We thought it could have used some salt.
Now, let’s talk about that vegan Coconut Cookie — O-M-G’dess!! Crunchy, chocolatey, coconuty heaven. Can’t wait to try the other vegan treats.
This was a hopping busy business, and it’s easy to see why. Lots of places to sit, outside (front & back), and great staff.
We also got Oat Milk Lattes — excellent coffee!
Pros: Fresh, delicious food, A LOT of vegan desserts, Charming
Cons: None

We tried the tempeh Reuben and the curry chickpea sandwich. They were pretty damn good! The gluten free bread slapped so hard that we didn’t even know it was gluten free until I came back to write this review. and the portion sizes were bigger than I expected.

Serving food beautiful to look at and taste in a beautiful space with generous outdoor seating. As a connoisseur of Reubens I had to try theirs, and it was on point with thick slices of sourdough bread, chewy tempeh and the just right amount of sauerkraut. Umami burger and avocado toast were smashing, pho was divine with lots of innovative green bits. Almost everything on menu could be veganized, large selection of vegan baked goods. Heaven.

100% gluten free with breads, desserts, & all baked goods made on premises. All food can be (easily) made vegan. Mushroom burger delicious. Rueben sandwich delicious. Potato salad accompaniment is the best I’ve ever had (and I consider myself an aficionado) & it’s vegan! A vegan soup that was so good. The food is fresh & thoughtfully prepared. Modern, nutritious, simple, & sophisticated. Love this place. We came here on our first day in Beacon. How are we going to go anywhere else? PS garden seating out back is LOVELY & staff is friendly, helpful, & super cool.

Amazing VGF baking - Edit
I stopped in here on a beautiful rainy day. So happy I did! I purchased a ton of baked good and loaves of bread as its so hard to find VGF!
Read moreThe sourdough French bread and rounds were absolutely amazing!
The cookies were all very good, scallion muffins were amazing and the cupcakes delicious.
Only cookie I didn't love was the almond finger, but the one dipped in chocolate was amazing. Think maybe a bit too much AL ond extract in the cookie alone.
I also had a VGF pho but didn't really feel it was worth it. Small portion and flavour wasn't extraordinary. Would totally go back for the baked goods though!
Pros: VGF baking , VGF artisan breads , Labeled well
Cons: Pho not very good

A selection of drinks and food, many of which can be made vegan and are labeled on the menu as such. They have a selection of flavors to add to coffee drinks, plus a couple changing seasonal ones. Several vegan baked goods too which I plan to try next time. Friendly staff and it is a pleasant place to sit, chat, sketch or write for a while.
