Good value, no frills, consistent

I have been coming here for many years with family and friends. Food is always consistent and good value with nice portions. My kids love it.

Pros: Vegan, No onion or garlic in food, Friendly staff

Cons: Hard to get a seat when busy

Average

Only had one dish from here which was the beef and fried rice. I ended up with egg in my rice (could have been my error) but thought I asked for it without. Was okay, seems to be one of those places that relies heavily on imported frozen meats, and they just add a sauce and minimal fresh veggies. Very expensive for what is. Might need to give it another go.

Pros: big menu

Cons: not all vegan/need to be careful what you order, expensive

Delish!!

I used to work nearby so I've tried nearly everything on the menu. I hadn't been back in years, and was great to see it so busy for dinner. (Was shocked and devastated to find out the next day they are closing down, due to expiring lease agreement).

- Roast duck + pork noodles are SOO good! The pork is cut thinner and so is cooked perfectly crisp. It comes in an amazing, sweet and salty soy sauce.
- Black pepper beef with fried rice is very salty, but uses great beef balls.

Went back the next day for takeaway as want to get as much as I can before they close.

- Combination fried rice noodles are exactly like the Vietnamese hu tieu, delicious.
- Malaysian curry lamb+rice: mildly spicy, ok, love the lamb they use

Pros: Roast duck and pork noodles, Combo fried rice noodles

Generous serves

Chinese style vegetarian restaurant with loads of vegan options. We started with lettuce cups. Then my partner had the pepper “beef” and I had the char kwae tow noodles. You can request without egg. Everything was tasty. Good portion sizes. Would come back.

Yum Mum

All standard and all good. Salt and pepper tofu, Singapore noodle, Satay skewers, Sichuan rice, etc. The friendly waiter advised us we'd ordered too much and he was right. The servings were big but I took the Leftovers away with me which made a nice, big lunch the next day.

Nice food but too expensive

Vegie Mum is your standard Chinese vegetarian mock meat restaurant (although they do serve things with tofu). However, the prices are quite steep compared to others. I love the salt and pepper prawns, but it's about thirty dollars and when it's take-away it's one of those smallish retangular containers (not the big ones other place use). Considering it's just store bought frozen prawns, albeit fried with batter and seasoning, it's a bit steep. However, if you just get something like Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice it's only $18, so there some cheaper options.

Lots of options

Malaysian style curry lamb was tasty and full of fresh veg and flavour

Spring rolls were too oily and plain, satay skewers peanut satay sauce was bland and lacking flavour

Pretty good if you choose the right dish, however quite bad if you choose the wrong one

Pros: Lots of options, Good mock meat options, Lots of flavour in the curry

Cons: Spring rolls bland , Satay skewer sauce bland

Great mock meat options!

This is our go to for a nice Chinese meal!

We have tried a while range of their food, their pepper beef and veg is one of our absolute faves, followed by the beef curry. Their pork and duck is amazing also.

Is give the lemon chicken a miss it has a different type of protein for the chicken which wasn't as nice as their other options.

Their sweet and sour pork is absolutely fantastic. Just like I remember having back in my meat eating days. Superb. I would also recommend the Char Quay Tow and the Mi Goreng. Both delicious.

They are good with delivery, and their portions are generous and you get a fair amount of veggies along with your protein.

They are a little on the expensive side for delivery, and this is one of my only problems with them. The way they advertise on various food delivery apps isnt great, they split their menu between several different names such as 'Vegetarian! Chinese Yum Yum', Vegetarian! Generel Wows Chinese' and 'Vegetarian! Lucky Lantern Chinese Chinese Resteraunt'

They are constantly 30% off with extortionate 'regular' prices for things such as the prawns almost pushing $30 for a container, so the price is brought down to a more 'reasonable' price of $20 ish dollars. Which is still a little pricy imo. It also means I can't order across their full menu, some food is on one, and some on another even though they're from the same resteraunt menu according to their website.

It's just a little frustrating and I wish they would consolidate to one delivery menu and set regular prices instead of masquerading as a good deal when the prices are average / above average even with the discount.

Pros: Fantastic flavours, Generous portions , Great mock meats

Cons: Delivery options are frustrating & imo misleading, A little expensive, Not all fully vegan - phone first to make sure!

It’s my go to restaurant for delicious vegan Chinese food. I love the black olive fried rice, char kway teow and the sweet & sour pork the most. Steven is the best host and looks after everyone so well. Highly recommended.

Excellent vegie restaurant

Top service from Manager Steve Dong and his staff PLUS creative chef Koh Lin make this in the top 3 vegie restaurants in Melbourne. Easy to get to location. Meals include many mock meat styles plus extensive bar plus BYO. Open for lunch and dinner, and I am a regular patron

Pros: Top food choices and quality, Service, Location

Cons: Can be hard to park outside, noisy at times

Muma Mia

If you like chinese you'll love Vegie Mum Fitzroy. First up the place is Licensed or BYO. We didn't know till we arrived only says licensed on the website. So take your favorite wine. We started with Short Soup because well, I can't help it, I love it. Unfortunately it was over cooked but it was still OK. We were in a group of 5 so we shared all the mains and the rice. With that bad news out of the way we started on the mains Salt and Pepper Squid, Mongolian Lamb, Shanghai Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs and another sizzling something or other which I can't recall the name of, all these dishes were superb. The Sichuan fried rice and the Must try Black Olive Fried rice its something really special. All in all a wonderful meal.
Steve, our host was quick with a joke and very friendly, making us feel at home.

Pros: Black Olive Fried Rice, Staff are Very Friendly, quite reasonable prices

Cons: Over cooked Short Soup, They don't adverise BYO

Best mock meats I've ever tasted!

Walked in with a friend, walked out having a new favourite restaurant. 😍
Super affordable $13 for a meal!
Can be more depending on what you choose.

Legit the mock meats are amazing.
And while there noticed that a lot of Chinese people were eating there as well. So surely that's a good sign 😉

Pros: Best mock meats

Cons: Can't do split bills

Decent serving sizes

I tried this restaurant for lunch. I had pan fried dumplings and “chicken” and cashew with vegetables. The service was prompt and I confirmed that both were vegan. It was a huge serving and nice.

Usually when you write something similar to the service being prompt, the serving huge, and overall nice, you would give the eatery at least 4 stars.

This time you give the eatery 3 stars, the same rating as you gave Burger Edge - Melbourne Central.

When you sat inside Vegie Mum did you think it was of the same merit as Burger Edge?

Are you happy to direct people to eat at Burger Edge as being equal to eating at Vegie Mum?

Just seems very strange to me.

Kittybiscuit

The rating system is difficult. But prompt service, being Nice/ok Isn’t the equivalent to 4stars and being delicious. I won’t be back. That’s all. If burger edge was still open I’d probably give it 2. But I won’t be directing people to veggie mum either

The best vegan meat of my life

Normally I don't really care about the fake meat but today I took the Malaysian curry lamb and we got a free taste something new from the kitchen and it was so tasty I couldn't believe it. My very meat lover friend was amazingly surprised how it's possible to make something that taste so much like the original thing. Everything was so good, also the service. Full points.

Pros: Taste, Service

Welcoming staff, good food

Steven welcomed us with the most enthusiasm I’ve ever seen in a restaurant manager. The vegan options are plentiful, they make their own bean curd and if you like mock meat, there’s plenty of options. Great place for your Australian-style Chinese food fix.

Unforgettably Delicious Meals

I had been going to their Doncaster restaurant for 4 years until I discovered they've opened in Fitzroy closer to home. Their meals always are large, generous serves that we never can finish (take-away most of the times) so one gets real value for money. Always serving divine, hearty and deliciously addictive meals, so my family and I can never wait until we come back next time. Love this place. Staff too, are pleasant and helpful and ambiance is relaxing and clean. 10 out of 10.

Pros: Amazing meals, Too many options, Large serves

Cons: none

Delicious Food, Excellent Value, Lovely Staff

Popped in early Sunday evening for a quick meal after perusing the menu in the window and was served up the most mouth-watering delicious bowl of wonton noodle soup that has ever passed my lips.

Perfectly cooked thin noodles, an abundance of the most delectable wontons you will ever encounter, and a good balance of al dente green vegetables, all of which is presented in an exquisitely subtle yet powerful full-bodied broth which tastes like it has been aged for months in a virgin oak barrel, makes this a superb meal whatever the occasion, from a quick lunch to a more formal dinner.

What is truly remarkable is that this taste sensation currently costs only $13.

The restaurant has an extensive menu, with 67 numbered items, meaning there is something for everybody's tastes. There is a wide variety of mock meat creations, some of them quite sophisticated and heading up around the $18 and into the $20 mark, along with a multitude of vegetable focused dishes.

There is no hiding that Vegie Mum is rooted in the Chinese vegetarian tradition and is suitable for those wanting to follow the eating practice of sharing food from the middle of the table so everyone gets to taste the various dishes. All the dishes can be eaten by a single person, but there is also plenty of dishes designed for individual consumption if that style is more your preference or particular situation when dining.

Just in the Veggie Noodle section of the menu there are 13 dishes. These include:

Curry Laksa
Wonton Noodle Soup
Thai Tom Yum Soup
Combination Rice Noodle Soup
Combination Fried Rice Noodle
Hokkien Mee
Char Kuay Teow
Mee Goreng
Singapore Noodle
Lak-Yum

That's a lot to work through, all currently only $13 each and there are more than this again that I would want to try from other sections of the menu.

All of this is overseen by a lovely and genial host and served up by friendly and warm waiting staff in a comfortable and relaxing environment.

This is a great place for all occasions: solo eating, date night, friends' meet up, family get together from grandparents to youngsters, or bigger events. It's a place you could take carnivores or veg-curious to let them experience the range of tastes available on a meat-free diet. Vegans need to be aware that a minority of the items have egg noodles or optional egg inclusions, but this is easily sorted,

Someone tell my regular go-to down on Brunswick St that I might be away for a while as I explore more of what's on offer here.

Chinese Veg*n Addition to Fitzwood

Friendly, honest service of some fairly typical Chinese vegetarian cuisine in the heart of Fitzroy. A great addition to this veg*n oasis. Many of the mains approach the $20 mark, however there are ample main and soup options that cost as little as $13.

Pros: large serves, yummy food, friendly accommodating staff, affordable prices

Cons: not vegan, too few veggies (for my liking), a tad unhealthy (i.e. typical Chinese veg fare)

Pros: Best curry laksa, Great they are now in Fitzroy!, Friendly staff

Cons: Wording of dishes sounds too meaty, Some dishes more expensive, Not vegan. They have egg in some dishes.
