Great pizza! - Edit
My friend and I had a lovely lunch here the other day, our first visit. We both had vegan pizza - I had build your own, they had the mushroom one. Both were very good, nice thin crispy base and lots of topping including vegan cheese We had a side order of vegan coleslaw as well which was really nice. Made sure to leave room for the vegan cakes - apple pie & cream for one, trillionaire's shortbread for me. REally good. Plus hot drinks.

Almost all the cakes are vegan and many gluten free - but not disappointing to omnivores! Really some of the best vegan desserts I've had anywhere. And savoury food is so good too, I've been several times.

The pizzas just get better and better!!! - Edit
Been a wee while since we've been organised enough on a Friday night to treat ourselves to a Crafty Crow pizza. They were inhaled! Choices were Mexicana and a craft your own with garlic and parsley oil with mushrooms, tenderstem broccoli and olives. Currently a 3 for 2 offer on, so added a tomato and oregano with spinach and olives for lunch tomorrow.....I'm not sure what we will be having for lunch tomorrow as it's gone! Gatehouse is so lucky to have such quality pizzas. Kerry and the team - keep up the good work! Ali [censored]

Dreadful - Avoid - Edit
Beware of this cafe it is getting rubbish reviews for a reason. We had ‘sour dough’ panini with meagre filling and an almost non-existent side salad. As a amateur bread maker myself I can tell the difference between cheap catering baguette style bread, which happened to be really dry and unappetising, and sour dough. This was definitely the former for which we were charged £9 each. I rarely complain but felt I’d been totally conned. The owner was not the least bit interested in my complaint. Initially though she did offer a refund and I said I wasn’t complaining to get money back but was more interested in her being more discerning in her suppliers and providing a better more honest product for customers. She made it clear that this was secondary to making a profit. Surely the two are not mutually exclusive? So, I did then accept her offer of a refund but she then refused and demanded I leave. When I further complained she called the police! And yes there is still a vegan tax. For the avoidance of doubt 2 * seems to be the default minimum rating I can give.

Cons: Poor quality , Misleading labelling, Expensive and a vegan tax

I was waiting for this review...clearly you have a different take on what actually transpired during your visit, so allow me to refresh your memory...you ordered two drinks and two paninis with side salad, which you ate in it's entirety without complaint. You ordered cakes and paid for your meal. All good so far.
Read moreYou then mentioned to one of my staff about the panini saying it’s not sourdough. He advised our baguettes are made to a sourdough recipe, as did our cook. You started a tirade about sourdough and how as a ‘professional baker’ you knew all there is to know and our baguettes definitely weren’t sourdough. A second member of staff came over to see if she could assist as you were becoming quite fractious to our 16 yo server.
You ranted at the second staff member, to demonstrate your knowledge of sourdough yet not asking for anything specific. I, as the owner, directly asked what the issue was. I showed you the recipe and supplier information for the baguettes we use for our panini. They are made to a sourdough recipe, and the description we use matches the description from our supplier. I explained I was happy with our product, our customers were happy and asked what it is you would like. You told me it was misleading and a scam and that the sourdough problem is ‘all over the news’. I asked if you were looking to be refunded you said no. At no point did I agree to refund you given you had eaten your meal in its entirety and been quite abusive to two members of staff. You wanted me to write to my supplier to complain. I refused, but suggested you contact Trading Standards if you felt that strongly. Your tirade continued and you attempted to employ other customers into your quest for sourdough rights. Our other customers were as incredulous, and embarrassed for you as we were. Our CCTV footage clearly shows your wife even attempted to get you to leave.
I politely asked you to leave. You refused and chose to ‘stand your ground for your rights’ I asked you a second time to leave at which point you then said you’d take a refund. As explained above, I refused.
On my third request for you to leave I advised I would call the police and you stated you would stay as you wanted to speak with them. By the time the police arrived you had gone, but the policeman mentioned you had called them for an ETA, expecting blue lights for a crime against Sourdough!
Abuse and harassment of staff and other customers will never be tolerated in our small friendly cafe.

A very disingenuous response but I’d expect nothing more..

Such a shame. Meagre pizza - Edit
We were so excited to find a veggie pizza place in an area where there isn’t much choice. The menu looked amazing. Sadly, the disappointment started when we lifted the pizza boxes and they felt empty. Although the base was nice and thin, the toppings were virtually non-existent. One sundried tomato cut into four, one artichoke heart quartered again, a smear of tomato sauce and hardly any cheese, so the whole thing was dry.
Read moreThe pizzas were expensive and I was also overcharged.
The people seemed nice and I hate to leave a bad review, but they’re doing themselves a disservice with such meagre offerings. I hope they take this as constructive criticism as I’d like them to do well.
Pros: Nice people, Seemingly good choice
Cons: Barely any pizza for the money, Expensive, Dry pizza with meagre toppings
CRAFTYCROW
Thank you for your review which was posted on both Happy Cow and Google. I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment.
Read moreWe pride ourselves on our excellent pizzas and service as reflected by the great reviews we’ve had from customers so are very surprised and disappointed to read of your experience.
Our topping portion sizes are normally much larger than you've described here, and our staff are fully trained in all our recipes, so I'm not sure what happened that resulted in a pizza below our normal standard, however I did contact you to see if we would be able to provide you with a refund as you were not entirely satisfied, however you refused.

Tasty food, but vegan customers are charged more - Edit
Great location; we were passing and called in because we'd been meaning to try it. Friendly service, attentive without being intrusive or making us feel rushed. We really enjoyed our scone and main courses.
Read moreWhen we got the bill, we thought it was a little higher than expected, though didn't sweat it and tipped anyway due to the staff being so friendly and helpful. It was only when we looked at the receipt later that we realised that we had been charged a whopping 50p extra each for having soya and oat milk in our tea and coffee, and also charged extra for choosing the vegan cheese option on pizza. This is a ridiculous thing for high street chain businesses to do, and thankfully almost all have now stopped this "vegan tax". For an independent, meat-free café to do so is extremely disappointing, and for this reason, we are unlikely to return.
Pros: Friendly service, Nice looking place, No meat served
Cons: Vegan & dairy-allergic customers are charged more, That's the only con, but a huge one!
CRAFTYCROW
Thank you for your review, I fully understand your disappointment with regards to the 'Vegan Tax', us too. As you know, we are not a high street chain with a huge budget and huge expenditure with suppliers that would enable us to amortise the cost of vegan products inline with the dairy alternatives. As a tiny independent business we just don't have the buying power of the larger chains. The meat and dairy industries are heavily subsidised, unlike alternative options. Another consideration we have is footfall. We are a small cafe in a rural town, so have less requests for alternatives than say, large or busy high street chains do.
Read moreTo give you some examples, vegan feta is some 233% more expensive than dairy feta. soy and oat milk calculates at 160% more expensive.
We would love nothing more than to be able to provide the alternatives at the same price, its just not possible at this stage of our business.
What we believe is really needed, is a lobby of MP's and government to reduce subsidies to meat and dairy industries, and assist small businesses to be able to compete with high street chains in offering alternatives without additional costs.
Wild C
Thanks for responding, though I completely disagree. Other vegetarian cafes "subsidise" any higher costs for vegan cheese etc in the overall prices they set across the whole of their menu. In other words, the vegetarian options subsidise the dairy-free ones. I've visited vegetarian cafes all over Britain and yours is the only one I've come across in recent years that penalises vegan customers. Please re-think your policy.

An extensive menu of vegan options, most vegetarian options could also be made vegan too. Gluten free options also plentiful. Delicious, freshly prepared food and value for money too, the portion sizes were generous 👌 died and went to heaven when we tried the desserts, today we had an orange millionaires shortbread and banoffee pie 🤤

Outstanding food - Edit
Dumfries and Galloway is not the greatest place in Scotland for vegan options, so we were delighted to discover this gem in Gatehouse of Fleet. Everything is cooked to order so we settled down for a wait with some tasty coffees, but it was so worth it. The family had pizza while I had the mushroom bruschetta, followed by cheesecake and salted caramel cake. The portions were generous and the food was delicious. The bruschetta in particular was so good my mouth is still watering at the thought of it. The cafe is also dog friendly, another bonus, and the staff are lovely. The wee shop adjacent to the cafe is also well worth a browse. We'll definitely be paying The Crafty Crow a visit the next time we're in the area.

Top quality from a small independent cafe. - Edit
We popped in after seeing the vegan pizzas online. Absolutely incredible food with a wide range of vegan options. We ordered the mushroom pizza and the nachos. The food was fantastic, I would normally expect this level of quality from a high end restaurant but we were blown away by the quality from this small kitchen and team. Finished it off with an espresso and the salted caramel cheesecake (vegan). Will be coming back here as it totally trumps most of the other cafes/restaurants in the area.
