Great find. - Edit
Stopped for a late lunch. Burgers were sold out but they have many other items as well. Food was very good. Followed it up with ice cream - also delicious.
Read moreWent back the next morning for breakfast - wanted to try the Elvis waffle but they were opening late that day and we were heading out of town.
Parking can be a challenge but you can park at the visitors center. Also there is parking behind shops on the ocean side.
Be sure to stop - it's worth it.
Went back March 2019 - burgers were available. They were tasty. Went back the next morning for the Elvis waffle! So good. Got the Morning Glory Bread Pudding to go since we were heading out of town. Everything was delicious.

Food from the heart in a great little town - Edit
We visited in the middle of a winter storm and it was raining torrentially outside, but inside Sweet Potato Kitchen was a welcoming refuge. The menu was extensive and the food was all very good. Most things are vegan and all the desserts are all vegan. The people are very friendly and kind and it was clear all the food was made with love. The town of Hawi and Sweet Potato Kitchen itself are definitely worth a visit, even in a rainstorm.

Honestly I wasn’t expecting anything this high quality in a tiny town. The meal we had would’ve felt totally in place in San Diego or LA.

Vegan comfort food - Edit
The front of the menu says “Like Gramma would’ve made if she was vegan”. 100% organic and 100% gluten free. We were there on a weekday for lunch and it was busy. The staff were helpful friendly and the service was fantastic. Lots of terrific art all around to look at and for sale also. Food was great I was so excited about the vegan options I forgot everything was also gluten free. So naturally the bun for my burger was gf. The burger was great and all the sides were amazing. The gf bun wasn’t for me. Next time I’m sure I’ll find another great option to try without a gf bun. The salads and bowls looked amazing. I had a Thai soup too that was a great side. I could have eaten that all day. The servings are good sized and the prices I think are reasonable for local organic fresh food.

Well worth the drive! - Edit
We visited Sweet Potato Kitchen in the fall of 2015 when it was in it's previous location. We were so happy to visit in March 2018 and see their new location. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is extensive with breakfast items like granola, waffles, and scrambles. Lunch includes plenty of burgers, bowls, and salads. They also offer delicious smoothies (try the sea monster and Hawaiian punch) and acai bowls. Our favorite dish to get is the beet burger plate with a beet patty, purple potatoes, mushroom gravy and collard greens - melts in your mouth so good. We visited twice during our visit on the Big Island - don't miss this place, it's well worth the drive!

Very good service and food - Edit
There are a surprising number of little restaurants gathered in Hawi in a somewhat remote area of Hawaii. Sweet Potatao Kitchen stands out near the end of the street (keep walking to the end of and across the street to get to the visitor's center and restrooms). The service was excellent, with details about any item on the menu and drinks. The veggie burger was delicious, homemade consistency and taste. The apple-beet-juice drink was recommended to me and I loved it. Lots of other vegan items on the menu make you wish you could stay and eat more.

Cons: No restroom (but an easy walk to visitor's center), A bit expensive, as all of Hawaii is, Not many tables, so it might get full easily

Really enjoyed our lunch here at the new location just 2 doors east. Storefront was nice and clean with a bright Caribbean color scheme. Food was best on big island! The owner Ruth was our server and provided a wealth of stories to make it a very memorable experience.

Healthy options - Edit
We wanted to be as blown away as the other reviews, but many items were not available the day of our visit including the Beetsteak. We both had the Huevos Paniolos instead with the kale and carrot salad. Service was super friendly and the food was prepared with a lot of love- we were the only customers and out takeout order took almost 30 minutes.

It's a small, local, owner operated place with a great selection of vegan, gluten free dishes. We had the lava bowl and the beetsteak plate and both were wonderful. Finished it off with a peanut butter and jelly on banana bread for desert, so good!

Stumbled across this little gem after ziplining all morning. We were hungry and this little spot did not disappoint. My husband had the beetsteak burger and I tried the polenta! We loved the wilted greens so much and the vegan ice cream was amazing.

Worth the Drive, closes at 3pm. Excellent find! - Edit
Sweet Potato in Hawi is MOSTLY vegan, but they do offer eggs (they know exactly where they come from), and there is some mention of honey (and they know exactly where that comes from too—all local). Chef Susie is superb!
Read moreI had fresh vegan banana bread with homemade peanut butter and homemade jelly with homemade vegan toasted coconut ice cream. Boom.
They have a BeetSteak, which is their homemade veggie burger, the plate came with gravy, sweet potato and salad.
They had a Curry Polenta special served with sweet potato and greens.
Their soup was hot or cold vegetable cream with dill and coconut cream.
I had an ice tea made from horsetail and oatstraw (good for the bones!).
All their ingredients clearly listed on their menu.
This is another really great place. They close though at 3pm.
Pros: excellent delicious food, healthful food, clear menu
Cons: Not in Kona

Great little find! - Edit
Jan 2015 - Sweet Potato Kitchen is a friendly, welcoming, funky little spot with great food! We first found it shortly after it opened in early 2014 and returned in January 2015 when visiting Hawaii. The food is excellent and there’s a good variety of items – no matter what your diet may be. The entire menu is vegan with the exception of the addition of local eggs to some dishes (optional). Dishes are created primarily from local ingredients, all of which are also non GMO and gluten free. The owner, Susan, is engaging; she and her friendly staff will help you find a dish that’s right for you if you are having a hard time choosing. We look forward to our next visit!

Food to die for! - Edit
We were so excited to find a vegan restaurant and we weren't disappointed! I had the salad sampler - delish - along with a freshly baked biscuit and my husband had the Beetsteak Plate which consisted of a delicious patty of beets,(and normally he doesn't like beets), rice, beans, veggies, spices, with Smashed Sweet Potato, wilted greens and mushroom gravy. For dessert we shared a slice of sweet potato pie topped with coconut cream - and then we waddled out of there! We'll be back on our next trip to Hawaii!
