Delicious kbbq but ask if everything is vegan

We waited an hour to get into Sura, but it was mostly worth the wait. This was my first Korean bbq experience, and they have a whole vegan section to choose from. We tried the crispy rice cakes, veggie dumplings, vegan bibimbop, and vegan bulgogi. We loved the crispy rice cakes and the bulgogi. The bibimbop and dumplings were good but nothing special and not much seasoning.

They serve everything with an array of pickled veg, which was really delicious. My one complaint is that we were not told by our server that the kimchi was not vegan. We clearly ordered off the vegan menu, made a point to say we were vegan, and the server even specifically mentioned the sides of vegan mac and mashed potatoes; so I assumed the kimchi was also vegan. It wasn’t until I overheard him serving another table of vegans that I realized the kimchi is not vegan. This is a really disappointing and egregious error on the part of the wait staff. Not telling guests that an item contains meat products can make people sick.

Otherwise, the staff was friendly and provided quick service. I just can’t overlook the lack of clear communication with vegan customers.

It’s my first Korean style experience.

The best dish we had this evening was the bulgogi beef it had a great texture and flavor. Then the rice cakes great spicy and so much fun. We also got the ramen and bibimbap they were good nothing special and probs won’t need to get it again. Then the scallion pancake was more scallion than pancake which was a bit sad because the batter was so good but the scallion was overwhelming.

Pros: Good flavor, Big portions

Best Vegan KBBQ Ever

[I'd like to dedicate this review to my late brother who would've been 32 today, and was the first in my family to go vegan. This one is for you...]

Never did I think I'd ever fully enjoy a Korean BBQ restaurant again now that I've gone plant-based. Sura proved me wrong and is the quintessential vegan-friendly KBBQ that you can find here in Southern California, and I am a fan.

My friends and I made an evening reservation on Yelp and I'm so glad we did. Although our party was a bit late from LA traffic, we were able to be seated with half our party to get the night started.

First off - all the banchan here is vegan by nature. Love that I could enjoy classics like kimchi, potato salad, and pickled daikon without asking whether there were any animal products used. You must order an entree to receive banchan, but order we did.

We went through a lot of main dishes together as a group. Some of the highlights include their Fried Mushrooms (AMAZING appetizer and perfect for a huge party), Japchae, Tteok Bokki on a stick, and their Mock Meat KBBQ Kalbi. Everything was priced well, portions were generous, and everything tasted delicious. Many of my non-vegan friends agreed that no quality nor taste was lost just because it's plant-based.

Being able to spend time with friends over KBBQ is something I never thought I'd have again, and Sura truly brought back that nostalgia. Thank you so much Sura for the great food, service, and experience. I definitely can't wait to return again one day.

Vegan Korean!

I have been dreaming of this place and waiting (impatiently) to try vegan Korean food at a restaurant. We ordered tofu hot stone bibimbap, tofu kimchi fried rice, panko shrimp fries, Thai tea, and peach tea. The bibimbap came with banchan. The food is just so good, and I really liked the side dishes. The side dishes were all vegan, including the mayo-based one and kimchi. The veggies were fresh, the tofu was crispy, and the servings were generous. The person working was very friendly and vegan-aware. There are a lot of vegan options, and they are definitely not a second thought. Check this place out! #Veganuary

Incredible vegan Korean

Vegan Korean cuisine with this many options is rare to come by. There’s an entire vegan section of the menu, along with other vegan-optional items throughout the regular menu. On the sweet side, vegan thai tea and taro ice cream are heavenly. Almost all of the savory dishes we ordered were excellent (the bulgogi was mid). Highly recommended overall.

Pros: Lots of vegan options

VEGAN options were great

Vegan menu was very obvious and they cook with espérate fryers and utensils. We ordered spicy tofu and dumpling soup which was definitely the right choice. The soup was very flavorful and the spice level was accurate ( medium ). My friend got the spicy kimchi fried rice and it was alright but he said the soup was better. Would eat here again.

Super Good Vegan Korean Food!

Got the milk tea boba, dumpling soup and kimchi fried rice. The soup was super flavorful and boba was nice and sweet, the fried rice was a little bland in comparison, but is good and a ton of food!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Very knowledgeable about vegan food, Separately prepared food

Cons: A tad pricey

Best vegan kbbq

This is my favorite Korean barbecue place. Although it’s not fully vegan they have so many vegan options and a good majority of the items on the menu can be made vegan. The food here is so good, my favorite item is the tofu bimibap. And if you dine in you get a whole bunch of delicious vegan side dishes to go with your kbbq. Also I don’t think this is the type of Korean barbecue place where you cook the food on the table, I haven’t seen any tables like that in my experiences dining there.

Amazing food

While the food is amazing some of the portions are a bit big and we would have appreciate it if the server would have told us that we were ordering a bit to much.
The vegan shrimp and the mushroom are extremely good! Otherwise we loved the place

Five Star for Vegan Options

This is one of my favorite places! I drive well over an hour just to come here as often as possible 💖 The tofu dumpling soup is my favorite 😍🤤🤌 Must get with some pomegranate soju. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable of veganism. Just a few minutes drive from the beach as well.

Love it.

I’ve been living in Korea for the last year and half and I am all about the food so on my visit to Long Beach I just had to try Sura! Everything was so good! We had the dumplings, japche and that vegan fried egg on top of my bibimbap was amazing! Not sure it’s on the menu anymore but it was made from mung beans and it was really good! I love Korean food!

Good but not great

I enjoyed the vegan marinated bulgogi BBQ served with banchan but it was not great. I am glad to have visited and if I were to visit again, I would order something else from the surprising vegan section of the menu and the various vegan items throughout.

Pros: Nice options for vegans!, Friendly staff

Cons: A tad expensive., Street parking

Vegan Korean outside of Korea

Despite Los Angeles County having perhaps the most Koreans outside of Korea, it's damn hard to find vegan Korean food. I've had vegan food in Korea but Sura is really something special. It's possible to find hot stone bibimbap made vegan in LA but Sura has other things too. Vegan options have their own section on the menu and include appetizers and soups. I recommend the vegan hangover ramen with rice cakes. They have smoothies that can be made vegan too. Feels like you get a lot for what you pay. I like the rice cakes so much that I tried the crispy rice cake skewers appetizer but it felt like too much food even for two people (gets repetitive to keep eating it). Parking is limited but the food is worth it.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Parking

Delicious and inexpensive

Came here with some vegan friends around 5 on a Saturday night. We got a table right away and to our surprise they had a happy hour special going on. Lots of vegan options on the happy hour menu, I tried the shroom fries and the vegan bao buns and both we INCREDIBLE! Everything was really reasonably priced, I got the two appetizers as well as 2 beers and my bills came out to $25. Will definitely be coming back to try more vegan options, they had a decently sized regular vegan menu too, and everything was very clearly labeled.

Pros: Happy hour, Lots of options, Delicious

Delicious options and flavors!

I haven't had Korean food in years and years. To me, the flavor was right on for the bibimbap. Also had fried dumplings and the scallion pancakes (saving half for breakfast, yum!).

Pros: Lots of options!

YES! Vegan Korean Food!

Sura has a dedicated vegan menu full of Korean staples and favorites, eg bulgogi, japchae, bibimbap, and jjigae. They even have vegan banchan (side dishes) that, as with a good Korean restaurant, they will refill w/o charge. We dove into vegan bulgogi, tofu japchae and tteokbokki, and... it was GOOD. Service was quick and the staff was really cool. Sura pulled of the right flavor profiles and ensured we knew what we ordered was indeed vegan. This is a great place for a vegan meal, or if you must, take your not vegan pals and eat together.
Sura and its staff are playing it safe with COVID for you and all of us!

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Vegan items cooked separately , Staff was very COVID conscience

Cons: Limited outdoor seating due to COVID

Vegan Korean!

It is not easy to find vegan Korean restaurants in LA. I trekked down to Long Beach to try this Korean restaurant with a vegan menu.

I ordered the kimchi fried rice with vegan shrimp and vegan egg. Based on Korean food I have had, this was one of the best.

The condiments at Korean restaurants are always a nice touch.

It's still not my favorite cuisine out there, but this place is good if you want to try Korean food vegan-style.

Pros: Modern cool atmosphere, Great background music, Tasty Korean
