Tasty food

You could have your vegan dinner in just 700-800 yen! A completely vegan restaurant.

Pros: Great vegan food at a very reasonable price

Best Vegan Restaurant in Tokyo

I went to a lot of vegan places while I was in Tokyo, and this was the best in almost every way! The food is lovely and only ¥700-¥800 for a good sized meal (and I eat more than the average person). The owner is so kind and friendly too. Just message before to make sure he is open. He replied to me pretty quick.

Pros: Excellent Price., Lovely Food., Very Kind Owner

Cons: Message before to check if open. Replies quick

My favourite place anywhere, ever.

The food is varied, delicious, and cheap. The owner, whom everyone lovingly calls "Mastro", which means master in Esperanto, is a man with a passion. Unlike many other vegan places, he's really not in there for the money.

When I used to live in Tokyo, I would have dinner there almost every day it was open, and then order take away for breakfast the next day.

I particularly loved the fried spinach dish, absolutely amazing.

Pros: Diversity of dishes, Delicious, Cheap

Cons: Better to check if it's open on Twitter

Delightful owner and fare!

If you are vegan and in Tokyo, you owe it to yourself to visit this quirky and delightful restaurant - the owner, food, and ambiance will bring a smile to your face. Highly recommend the set lunch/dinner - delicious, healthy, and very satisfying. Don’t miss the taiyaki - it alone is worth the trip!

Pros: Owner is a joyful, ethical vegan, Delicious, healthy fare, Very (perhaps even too) reasonably priced

Eat and Esperanto experience...must see

Awesome restaurant holded by a passionated and friendly guy. The food is amazing, and the price is surprisingly low. This restaurant worth a visit to Waseda if you are anywhere in Tokyo. You will also discover about esperanto, and maybe even get into it as I did...who knows;)

Nedredebla restoracio, kies posedanto estas afablega pasiulo. La mangxo bongustegas kaj la prezo estas surprize malalta.
Unika loko, versajne la plej esperantista restoracio en la mondo. Kompreneble vi iru ;).
Dankon Saito!

Pros: Food, originality of esperanto, price, owner

Cons: None

I want to go every week!

A very unique cafe in Tokyo and it must the only vegan Esperanto cafe in the world.
Food was great and set menu was 700¥. Also discounted drink menu when you order the set menu.

I learned a lot about Esperanto and owner introduced me to Esperanto music,
magazines and more. Esperanto is a language that fits in the vegan movement: They both represent freedom and inclusivity of all species.

Pros: Great food at great prices!, Esperanto!, Very nice and attentive owner

Cons: Nothing bad to say about this place.

Fabulous vegan food in Waseda

I love this little restaurant. It is owned by a highly attentive fellow who does all the cooking and waits on the tables. He is absolutely delightful and goes out of his way to make your experience wonderful. The menu has two set courses and a la carte options. All are vegan. All are delicious and fresh. The set courses are where you should focus your attention, especially the daily menu. It comes with 5-7 different items with healthy portions - so come hungry. I especially appreciate that the owner includes a healthy dose of protein with the meals - generally tofu and legumes. The restaurant serves beer, wine and nihonshu (sake) and is a BARGAIN.

Delicious, cheap and large portions

I had dinner with a couple of Japanese friends who had vegan good for the very first time. All of us had a great time, we tried the chickpeas "hamburger" and the vegan curry, it was very tasty, with also many "okazu" (vegetables, tofu, etc.). Great quality and quantity for only 700 yens per person! We also had a very nice chat with the owner, himself vegan for 10 years as I remember. I will definitely go there again!

Pros: Delicious, Cheap, Large portions

Go for it!

A very original place run by a guy who is quite enthusiastic about veganism and esperanto - two things that do not have a lot in common at the first glance, but work out just fine. The food and service was flawess, the shop has a nice interior and a lot of stuff related to esperanto. I would have expected a fatter bill after the deliciousness we’d had, but we paid 1900¥ for two 定食 sets composed of various ingredients, plus drinks. We also received a neat vegan map of Tokyo restaurants plus a kind invitation to a vegan event in 代々木 park. Go for it!

Pros: Great taste, Price, Service and kind staff

Cons: If you dislike esperanto I guess. Otherwise none

Delicious, healthy food in a cozy atmosphere

I had dinner here with 2 friends who are not vegan and we all absolutely loved it! We all ordered set meals which were 700 yen a piece and we all left very full. The vegetable spring rolls were my favorite. The chickpea curry with brown rice was very good and came with sides of tofu, veggies and miso soup. The owner was very kind. All in all, it was a delicious, nutritious and filling meal for a very affordable price. I would not hesitate to go back and I would feel confidant that people who don't normally seek out vegan food would also leave satisfied.

Pros: Delicious, Affordable, Comfortable atmosphere

Finally affordable vegan food in Japan!

Offers both a la carte and 2 set meals. Spent 700yen on one of the set meals of the day. It came with 1 plate consisting of tofu and veggies, 1 bowl of miso soup, 1 bowl of brown rice, and a small plate of veggies. It was amazing. The portions are huge for the price. Very friendly owner. Will go back everyday for as long as I stay in Tokyo.

Pros: inexpensive, tasty, great owner

Cons: none

Really inexpensive good food!

My boyfriend is really into language learning so when we found out about a vegan restaurant that was also all about Esperanto we had to check it out. It did not let us down!
First off, the food was very tasty. We ordered the daily set meal (which was rehydrated dried tofu and onions plus all the side dishes), vege fried meat, vege spring rolls, and vege dumplings. Everything we ate was excellent, and it was only ¥1600 for all of it!
Secondly, the experience of speaking Esperanto with the restaurant owner and other patrons was really unique, and everyone was incredibly friendly. The owner of the restaurant was very kind and gave us lots of info about vegan groups and meetups in Japan. Even those who aren't into Esperanto or languages will still enjoy chatting with the owner though, as he also speaks Japanese and excellent English. Plus the food and prices are enough to make a visit worth it!

Pros: super friendly owner and patrons, delicious food, really inexpensive

Amazing

Love this place so much. Don’t know any Esperanto but that doesn’t mean the vegan food isn’t great. Owner is so nice and wholesome. Great atmosphere and very close and convenient to Waseda University. Just be sure to check opening times before going there.

Low prices for large servings

I'm a student at Waseda University and this place is less than a couple minutes from where I live, so it is nice to have a vegan place close to home. The prices are low, only 600 yen for a filling dinner. This place is not open during lunch though, so make sure you are aware of that.

I was also wondering about this, until I saw a Facebook post saying that the closings were due to family issues (namely, a family member of the owner in hospital).

A chance to learn about another culture in Japan

I enjoyed the food and the admired the effort the owner went to create a cafe with a different culture and foods from around the world.

Although my options were a bit limited due to my gluten free diet, the food was great.

I tried the organic wine and it was definitely the best wine I had had in Japan and must have been free of preservatives because I would have reacted to preservatives.

Friendly owner with a passion.

Pros: Healthy, Friendly

Cons: Limited gluten free options

cheap and delicious

This restaurant is located near Waseda University and if you are a traveler you may not have an opportunity to visit a remote place such as this but it sure is an amazing place to check out.
Situated in he main road it's quite easy to find.
The dumplings are amazing and the food is really cheap.
And you maybe able to learn a new language there.
Highly recommended

Pros: affordable , delicious

Cons: out of central area

A vegan gem in the heart of Waseda

Finding good vegetarian food options in Tokyo has become easier during the 7 years that I have been visiting the city, however, the ‘hidden’ meat and fish in stocks, soup and sauces are still ubiquitous. Not so with Sojo (pronounced So-yo), a new vegan café/restaurant in the heart of Waseda.

Only 400m from Waseda subway station on a wide, pleasant boulevard, Nori-san has created a unique eatery combining his two interests: good vegan food and the language Esperanto.

In the interests of full disclosure, let me say at the outset that I visited as an Esperanto-speaker, however two of my companions were neither Esperanto speakers nor vegans and received a very warm welcome.

We enjoyed good food and friendly hospitality. Menus are trilingual: Japanese, Esperanto and English. Information abounds about veganism and Esperanto and Nori-san is happy to chat about his passions with those who are interested.

Alternatively, simply go for the well-priced and plentiful food and free wi-fi! Hopefully this vegan haven will be here for years to come.

Pros: Excellent value, Warm welcome, Free wi-fi

Cons: Ideally need to reserve ahead at present
