Re-opened Mar 2016. Billed as the first vegetarian tapas restaurant in the UK, this place was est. Jul 2015 upstairs from Iydea Vegetarian Cafe; then in 2016 it expanded onto both floors, and Iydea was shut down by the owners (same). Everything on the menu is vegan. Confirmed closed, Jun 2017.

Amazing flavours...... - Edit
First time visiting Rootcandi but certainly not the last. The food was outstanding. Fresh, delicate, flavoursome and imaginative. Absolutely faultless. Thanks Rootcandi for a gorgeous meal.

Mind blowing - Edit
Rootcandi offers some of the best vegan food I've had in Britain. The flavours are complex but complement each other perfectly. The plates are small which means you get to try a few different dishes. I recommend the crispy tofu and the sauteed greens. For dessert I had the sundae which was out of this world. I highly recommend this place. Very reasonably priced for such high quality food too.

Game-changing vegan food - Edit
This is truly the next level. I've never eaten at an all-vegan restaurant that's providing this level of quality. Dishes are imaginative, delicious, and perfectly curated into a 'set' which you share with your dining partner. I don't know what to say other than it was simply incredible - this is the only vegan restaurant I'd feel safe about taking a die=hard carnivore to and I've been vegan for a decade now.

Pros: Amazing dishes, Amaaaazing dishes, AMAAAAAAZING DISHES

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. - Edit
"I wouldn't recommend this to anyone." My (Omnivore) mum whispered to me as we continued to wait for our food. The staff are lovely, but I'm sorry I cannot write a good review:
Read more1. We waited 40 minutes for our order. The restaurant wasn't even half full.
2. They got part of my order wrong, but I wasn't going to ask for a correction when extremely hungry, the gyoza dumplings (The mistake) were not good, so I couldn't pass of the mistake.
3. The food went cold super fast, but the chefs and staff couldn't really control that.
The best things were the tempura courgette fries and smoothies. The ramen broth soup was bland, the kimchi, whilst presented great was cut in HUGE chunks, and without a knife, as only spoons and chopsticks are on the table, unless you ask specifically, it is impossible to eat without taking in too much heat. For the price, I expected more. I love that this place is vegan, and maybe we came on a bad day, since all other reviews were shining, but for £40 it was not worth it.
Pros: Courgette Fries., Friendly staff., Mango Tango smoothie.
Cons: Price., Wait time., Bland food.

Wow - Edit
This is quite simply the best vegan restaurant we have been to in England. Everything from the staff to the food was outstanding. We went for the Indian style tapas and were blown away by just how good it was. The deserts too were fantastic. We could not fault this place in any way. A little bit more expensive than some places but we are talking high end dining and worth every penny. Really looking forward to going back to Brighton because we will defiantly be doing back here.

Awesome vegan food - Edit
My standards are pretty high... so it really excites me to find a place with such a gorgeous energy. The food is fabulous. It's a tapas restaurant so you can sample lots of different things all in one go. Quite a treat for the senses. A medley of different colours and a dance of flavours to excite the palate.
Read moreEverything is vegan - yay! They also offer loads of well labelled gluten-free options (many of which come as standard).
I enjoyed the Asian sharing tapas with my husband. It comes in bowls arranged at different heights (see the piccies). The only problem is deciding what to tuck into first.
Can't wait to go back next time I am in Brighton.
Pros: Delicious Food, Good variety of choice

Really delicious, incredibly varied food in friendly atmosphere - Edit
Had a lovely evening with our non-vegan friends there who were deeply impressed and not missing a thing. All of us absolutely loved it, the food was excellent, also very nicely presented. Huge bonus for allowing our dogs to come along - perfect evening, thanks a lot!

So freakin' good!! - Edit
I just ate here tonight, and wow! I'm tempted to go back again tomorrow! There are so many great dishes to choose from, and even though it's a tapas place, the portions for each plate are good. I had three plates and dessert, and I'm actually a little too full - and I have a HUGE appetite! My three dishes were fantastic, but I will dream about my dessert - the chocolate tart - forever. Oh. My. Gosh! Don't miss this one!

Absolute heaven - Edit
Went here for our anniversary. The food is absolutely heavenly. It's billed as 'vegan tapas' but that doesn't begin to cover it: what you get is a selection of perfectly balanced small plates from a range of world cuisines.
Read moreWe had the pan-Asian selection which was some of the best food I've had anywhere, especially the tofu and broccoli in Japanese sauce which was just to die for. Desserts are ambitious, e.g. aquafaba-based pavlova with coffee mousse.
Atmosphere is great; service is warm, friendly and efficient. Could not recommend this place more highly.

One of the best desserts I've ever eaten - Edit
Went here for a late lunch, I didn't do the tapas, I was on the lunch menu. I had the beetroot burger with courgette fries and garlic aioli. Burger was small but well-formed, it actually tasted of beetroot too. Fries were basically tempura vegetables, delicious - and the aioli was lovely. But the dessert - chocolate and ganache tart with a mixed nut and date base, salted caramel, spun sugar and vanilla ice cream. Absolutely outstanding. The base, the salted caramel - amongst the best desserts I've ever eaten. I didn't know vegan could be this good. Looking forward to plenty of return visits.

This restaurant is a treat! Great service with very attentive staff. A broad menu clustered into themed tapas collections. There are some great deserts too. Not the cheapest but a special experience.

This is somewhere to go for a special and different meal out, partly because of the price but also because they have made a great effort with the setting and presentation to make it feel special.

Delicious all vegan tapas. - Edit
Rootcandi seems to be a newish restaurant above the Iydea cafe. The atmosphere was great and the staff were extremely polite and well informed, happy to talk about all the dishes and asking for feedback. All the food on the menu was vegan, so it was great to have so much choice. The menu was broken up into sets of dishes from around the world. We had the Asian selection, but all equally sounded lovely. I would definitely recommend the carrot dumplings, which were delicious! As was the fruit tart and ice cream. Would definitely recommend.
