Lunch and dinner - day ‘n’ night - Edit
I came to Hiroshima this Saturday and in somewhat of a pickle, so to speak. Ravenous after a good meal, I was absolutely delighted to find JoGeSaYu.
Read moreLunch was almost healing. My foul mood and skepticism over the speed of which the dishes were served had the place at a disadvantage, but when the katsudon hit, I could feel my body screaming for more. I ordered the tantanmen, too, and flavors were deep, rich, creamy and with that lovely, sesamy-nutty weight to it. Salad and miso were likewise silent hitters, not to mention the rich chocolate ice cream.
I left elated and charged, so going back for dinner, whilst my carcass munching relatives practiced non-existing moral integrity at Ichiran, was a no-brainer.
However.. the dinner experience was sadly far from the luncheon picklesaviories I’d experienced a few hours earlier. The service was cold and indifferent from the new evening waiter, only slightly bettered by the lunch waiters continuous, pleasant presence. Although the karaage and teppan okononiyaki were good, the ¥2000 sushi was actually laughable. Red and yellow pepper, broccoli and radishes with absolutely no inventiveness whatsoever. The katsu was also featured in the okonomiyaki, but felt like leftovers pieces thrown in. What’s more, the Japanese, standard water service was now nowhere to be found, and when requesting “o-hiya” (cold water) very politely, I was ironically, very coldly redirected to the ¥300 mineral water. Come on, now, that’s milking the already dry almond further…
They ended up forgetting my last order of mappo tofu, and on top of that they suddenly announced that the dessert was 25 minutes away. Coupled with service from the angry waiter and the crime of serving their food on plastic plates, I’d had enough and politely asked for the check.
It felt like two different places, and that’s sad, because the latter had me right back to feeling robbed at yet another vegan restaurant in it for the money and over charging first chance they get.
Lunch 4 - Evening: 1.5 - Total 2.75
Tl;dr: Go here for lunch, not dinner.

Horrible attitude of the restaurant - Edit
Very bad attitude towards customers. The restaurant was completely empty but they denied us a table. We passed through 25 mins later and it was still empty. Unsure on the reason for denial (felt a bit of racial discrimination)

They do stop serving food at 2pm. Perhaps it was that? Not sure what time they open up for food again. It’s not clear that they close at all.

Go Here If You Love Your Stomach - Edit
JoGeSaYu were the only Japanese entry to make Happy Cow's hot new places in 2025. Having now been there I can only say that they meet and exceed all expectations.
Read moreThe menu is full of Hiroshima delicacies and local favourites. We had a entree sampler plate and okonomiyaki, followed by donburi and Dandan Noodles. Everything was delicious and when we'd had our fill, we found room for parfait.
This place is not to be missed. It is an easy walk from the Peace Park and Castle, the staff speak English (and they have an English menu), and the atmosphere was quiet and enjoyable.
The only caution: we got a table in a near-empty room at 18:30. By 19:00 it was filling up and people were either choosing to wait or turned away. This place will only get more popular; consider contacting to make a reservation.
Pros: Best Okonomiyaki Ever, Parfaits!, Literally everything else.
Cons: Can be busy.

Couldn't eat there - Edit
I was excited to see a vegan restaurant that also had gluten-free options (tempura and curry). However, the cooking utensils as well as oil are used for both gluten-free and wheat. Unfortunately, I had to leave without getting to try the food as I have to avoid cross-contamination.

Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff, Gluten-free options

Pretty good - Edit
Went for lunch, so their menu was more limited. However the 2 main dishes they had were very nice
Read moreThe starters were pretty basic (edamame, picked salad and fried seitan), although the seitan was absolutely delicious.
Main dish (katsu curry) super tasty, really enjoyed it.

Absolute Must Try! - Edit
Everything at JoGeSaYu was exceptional. I’ve already been two times in as many days. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The menus had English descriptions of the items. Theh had nonalcoholic options in their drink menu and I enjoyed trying the non alcoholic sparkling rosè in their beautiful glasses. I ordered the Mini Teppan Okonomiyaki, Agedashi Tofu and the Karaage feom the À la carte menu. They were all so flavorful. I ordered the mapo tofu rice bowl as my main course, it was delicious, although it was almost too hot spice wise for me… but it gave me an excuse to order the strawberry chocolate ice cream parfait to cool my mouth down, which was decedent. I couldn’t resist also trying the Setouchi Lemon Cake, it was fresh and creamy and positively picture perfect.

High End Service, Mid-Range Price - Edit
It really is a good restaurant with some good dishes, sadly for us the portions were a bit small. The food itself was really good, at a mid-range price point it was to be expected, but the staff really treats you like it is some high end restaurant; serving you water, getting your bags and jacket, asking if you’d like to try a glass of their alcohol free drink, it all felt a bit too much for me.
Read moreThe restaurant has a lunch menu (11.30am-2pm), cafe menu (2pm-5pm), and a dinner menu (5pm-10pm). The lunch and dinner menu don’t differ that much but they do have some differences. We went for both lunch and dinner, and for some reason you get free water and refills during lunch but have to pay ¥300 during dinner. Biggest difference is that you can get the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki as a side during dinner.
We ordered a bunch of different things, cutlet bowl, dandan noodles, okonomiyaki, tempura bowl, mapo tofu bowl, and even a matcha latte. All of them were really good but some were quite expensive and the portions rather small.
Definitely worth a visit though, food is good, service was over the top, we even got a free bottle of their alcohol-free drink for filling in a survey!
Pros: Extremely friendly staff, Good food, Hiroshima style okonomiyaki
Cons: Small portions, Restaurant fills up quick

Delicious, top quality, worth every yen! - Edit
Went here twice in 2 days, for lunch and then next day for dinner. I think we tried pretty much everything on the menu and every dish was delicious, beautifully presented and came very quickly with great service. We ordered about 5 mains and a dessert just before last orders and they still made everything with such care! I particularly loved the tempura veg and the karagee (super soft fried faux chicken) and all the desserts - the parfait and lemon cheesecake were both heavenly! Not cheap but for a fine dining meal it wasn’t too bad.

The food was delicious, priced well and big portions. My partner and I had two mains each because there were so many good looking choices on the menu. The lemon cake and chocolate gateaux for desserts were great also - the lemon one was the best

overpriced - Edit
Don’t get me wrong, the food truly is amazing but the fact that I had to buy a drink with it and couldn’t pack the rest was a bit much for me. If you are a person liking bigger portions, you will surely not be disappointed. For the rest of us - it’s too much and for too much money. You also cannot just stop by for the dessert, which for me ment I won’t be able to try it.

BEST FOOD! MUST TRY! - Edit
✨ JoGeSaYu – Hiroshima ✨
Read moreThis place is an absolute hidden gem! The food was extremely delicious, with flavour that was seriously on point and dishes that were beautifully presented. We went with the Dinner Course—which I highly recommend—it’s reasonably priced, best value for money and lets you try a bit of everything. You even get to choose your main and a flavoured ice cream for dessert!
The food is authentic Japanese vegan, thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavour. The staff were super lovely and spoke pretty good English, making the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. The restaurant is super clean and aesthetic, with a calm, modern vibe. Gluten-free options are available, and the staff were helpful in navigating dietary needs. And as a fun bonus, you can even get a cool sticker at the end if you follow them on Instagram!
It’s in a great location too—just a 5-minute walk from the local streetcar (tram). We loved it so much we came back two nights in a row before leaving Hiroshima.
Vegan or not, you’ll love it—this spot is an absolute must-visit!

Delicious parfait and curry - Edit
Enjoyed the food here, it was really delicious. The owner was also sweet and gave us free stickers. Only dropped the rating to 4 stars because the price felt quite high. Also mind that they only service certain food at specific times (we went before 5pm so the only savoury option was curry)

Cibo buono - Edit

Still room for improvement - Edit
I am grateful that at least there is one fully vegan place in Hiroshima and that should be appreciated. This is still relatively new restaurant, and there are quite a few points that could be fixed. Firstly, the staff does not communicate in English even though there were only non-Japanese guests in the restaurant. Secondly, you are required to order a drink (even though we ordered meal set that included a drink) and you are not welcomed with tap water (which is quite common in Japanese restaurants). Thirdly, the 10% service is added to your bill which is also not usual for Japan (pulse the service was not worth it). This is definitely not authentic Japanese restaurant, rather a westernized version of Japanese food. The food is good, however portions are small and a bit pricey (almost 1000 yen for small bowl of salad with dressing for instance). I hope that this place will develop because there is a potential.
