Small vegetarian takeaway near the station and the Laines. Makes baked goods using low-gluten and gluten-free flour, and all cakes are vegan. Meals are made to order so if you ask, the kitchen will veganize a dish or cater to a food allergy or intolerance. Breakfast dishes include pancakes and gado gado, while lunch might be a thali-style lunchbox or spelt-base pizza to go. Everything is soy-free. Reported closed December 2023.

The Best of The Best - Edit
I am amazed there aren't queues permanently around the block for this place, especially in health-conscious Brighton. The food is out-of-this-world delicious. It's literally a taste sensation; the kind of food that makes you pause after a bite because you get hit with such flavours. And the cakes! OMG the cakes!!!! They are indescribably good! On another level! This is my favourite eaterie in Brighton. It's an absolute hidden gem. Best of all, it's all healthy - REALLY healthy - not some naff marketing ploy kind of healthy. The owner/chef seems extremely knowledgeable and devoted to his food whenever he pokes his head out of the kitchen. He seems to live back there, which I guess is the right place for a chef.
Read moreThe only sad thing is that it's blooming tiny. On the upside, there is always room when I go in for a nosh :)
Pros: Incredible Food, Lovely relaxed staff, Delicious AND healthy
Cons: Small

Amazing hidden gem - Edit
I’ve been going to helmston for both their salad boxes and sweat treats. Salad boxes are delightful and something different to your usual lunch meal which is fantastic. One thing to note, I do believe they’re still cash only so make sure to have some on you😄
Read moreThe sweet treats are so so delicious. I’ve tried the chocolate b**by which is sublime, peanut comes and and a selection of cakes - they’re all healthier versions too which is a bonus.

Perfect Salad boxes and juices. - Edit
This tiny box of a cafe has a chef making magical breakfasts and lunch boxes for the queue of regulars who beat a path his door. Also check out the juice of the day and idiosyncratic cakes and pastries.

Most colourful food in Brighton? - Edit
If you haven’t been to Helmston before then you must try it. It’s a tiny little cafe tucked just off Trafalgar street that sells amazing salads and juices.
Read moreI had their 18 ingredient wonder salad which tasted amazing and is brilliantly colourful. They have quite a few other salad options available - all of which can be veganised by removing any cheese or yoghurt. I really want to go back and try the gado gado salad next.
They also serve a huge selection of different juices and have possibly the most interesting and colourful cake display in Brighton. They also offer breakfast options.Definitely check it out!
They have limited space inside for customers to eat in, but it’s cheaper to take away the salad boxes so grab one and eat it outdoors! Perfect food for summer lunches.
Pros: Healthy and interesting salads, Colourful vegan cakes , Fresh juices
Cons: Not much indoor seating, Prepared fresh so there may be a slight wait

Delicious - Edit
My friend & I only get to Brighton a few times a year - as it's 30 miles away, but we head straight to Helmston now, just before lunch time to get there before the queue!
Read moreTheir thali-style lunchbox / salads are fantastic to look at & delicious to eat, with many different scrummy ingredients. Their drinks are lovely too & their cakes are something else - if you get a chance to try their Chocolate Bomb then do, I'm sure you will not be dissapointed. We have tried a few of their cakes over the last couple of years & they've all been great.
If you are in Brighton Tue-Sat 08:00-16:00 then give them a visit.
Pros: delicious, all cakes vegan & everything else can be., soy free

A hidden treat - Edit
The Helmston is tiny characterful place tucked away on a side road not far from Brighton train station. I have a vegan lunch box from the Helmston at least once a week and can't recommend them highly enough. The meals are so tasty (gado gado, curry box, dall pot and more) and the cakes are delicious and unusual. Takeaways are served in recyclable/biodegradable packaging (cardboard/paper and utensils are wood). Plus they play really nice music :)

Awesone!!! By far one of the best places to eat! - Edit
Today was my second visit in this Awesome place. Andy the owner is one of the nicest people you will meet, he is very good at what he does, and will make sure you will leave happy and full!

I hope to be half as good cook as Andy so I can keep this healthy way of life and enjoy my food!
I'll keep coming for more and I hope you all will bless Andy by coming and visiting him. He has a great thing going on there and I wish him much success! Many thanks!

What a beautiful little place! - Edit
Helmston is a wonderful little cafe, tucked away just off Trafalgar Street. They serve truly beautiful, colourful, hearty food, and the atmosphere in there is second to none.
Read moreI tried the hemp milkshake and was blown away - I've never tasted anything like it and will back for another very soon.
The chef's ingenious baked creations are also something to behold - and taste just as gorgeous as they look. Mango & chocolate cakes and orange & hazelnut meringues are just a couple I sampled and can thoroughly recommend.
The mains are just as glorious and are reasonably priced, with very generous portions. The bhaji box I ordered came with all the trimmings, and again, looked and tasted equally lovely.
There's no meat served and a lot of the dishes are vegan and wheat free. There is also a shelf or two of conscientiously sourced ingredients available to purchase.
There's a real sense that the chef has a deep knowledge of his ingredients and the food he's creating - as well as some cracking whistling skills. The waiter was warm and attentive and made for an altogether lovely lunch experience.
I will certainly be back!
Pros: Friendly atmosphere, Very reasonable price, Unique & filling healthy food!
Cons: Not for big groups

We just had a delicious large vegan (today's special)Indonesian salad, a vegan fermented lemon and pineapple juice, and peanut & chocolate cake, and a hemp coffee.
Read moreOur taste buds loved it!
Very good value indeed. It all came to just £12!
There is seating inside (for up to about 9 people). It is very cosy, warm and inviting.
The atmosphere is very good and the people there are very friendly.
I'd really recommend eating there. I'd rate it 10 out of 10.

Hearty and healthy food - Edit
Lovely vegan food options (I had an Indonesian style salad that was really tasty and filling for £5) and really friendly staff. They have lots of other things I haven't had the chance to try yet, like a vegan pizza style pastry. Would definitely recommend.
Read moreVery small seating area (I ended up sharing the only table with the (very nice and friendly!) chef on his lunch break), so you might end up having to take away if there are a few of you and it's busy.
Pros: Great food, Friendly staff, Reasonably priced
Cons: Very small seating area
