I don't know what I would have done without this co-op!

In 1988 shortly before moving to Florida, I stumbled upon this co-op and got to volunteer for several months. In addition to my parents' natural upbringing, the co-op left such an impression on my life that I searched for similar places in Florida and could not find any! After being in Florida for 10 years and finally having a good support system, I started a home business that mirrored the co-op as best as I could. Now I'm back here in NJ since April 2023 and have so much experience and knowledge I am wanting to share with the co-op staff & members from my 30+ years of learning TCM and nutrition.

Amazing health foods shop

Great place to find hidden vegan gems. They have the best vegan candy and snacks.

Get a joker candy bar (or 5) and it is exactly like snickers. To this day I haven't found a place that sells those other than this place. For that reason alone I'd give it a 5, and the additional food items heavily secure that 5 star rating.

It's a gamble

Has a cozy, broken shack kind of feel. Sometimes it's clean, other times dirty, broken, disorderly, and unsanitary. Bulk items and area are sometimes contaminated with bugs or rodent material/feces. Products are sometimes sold long after their expiration, best by, sell by, etc date. Horribly mismanaged IMHO. Almost every member of it's board of directors quit because one toxic employee.

Pros: Has some unique vegan products, Can sometimes do special orders

Cons: Some products are extremely overpriced, Many expired items are still sold. , Unsanitary, filthy, conditions.Rotten produce sold

Look at pictures on Yelp and Google reviews to see some of the (IMHO) disgusting, unprofessional, negligent and unsanitary conditions.

Oh my god Chad, you were a member and worker here for 10 years, plus president of the board, and we are a co-op. You're just basically complaining about your own incompetence. You had plenty of opportunities to fix anything you saw wrong. But instead I guess you took weird pictures as black mail for when you inevidibly got kicked out? You know damn well our prices are a minimum mark up.

Let's see you, you have a pic of some bad lettuce slated for compost (note the X on the price tag) which is also sealed so I don't know how you would surmise that it was used in smoothies. Also you are literally composting it - or about to in the pic, right?? (...Right???) You were known for taking home expired food, I hope that lettuce isn't still in your car!

A lot of places with food have rodent problems. Heck, a lot of places without food have rodent problems! During covid, we had very little staff and were barely open. All these problems were dealt with No thanks to you and your Passion for Photography!

The store sells eggs, cheese, milk, fish oil, dairy ice cream, etc & uses glue traps to kill mice.

Check supplements for gelatin caps, especially if you are unfamiliar with brand. It seems vegan and non vegan items are kept separately in fridge and freezer only. Thank you for the info on glue traps and fish oil.

Having volunteered there for years, I highly recommend checking bulk items to see if they are rancid (nuts), if there is an insect infestation, or if there are any rodent feces.

Vegan Cafe, Vegetarian grocery and Diverse friendly Community!

I volunteer at the coop usually 1 two hour shift per week and they have lots of community feel here, from events and space to hang out to friendly conversations with the cashiers or customers. Their food is great in the cafe, though everything can be pricey, it encourages membership, but some things are pretty well-priced and hard to find, though you can always put a request in to order whatever you desire. There is also a pretty diverse and excellent bulk section for coffee, teas, herbs, seeds, nuts, grains and the like. Their soups in the grocery store are great, as well as the daily prepped spinach pies and sometimes they have peanut/almond/sunflower butter powerballs!

Pros: Bulk section

Cons: Pricey if you don't know what to get ornot volunte

Great Local Spot to Shop

I love this place. They have Tofurkey, Daiya, etc. I sometimes stop by and get one of their sandwiches that I think are freshly made. I love the cafe especially since everything is vegan. They have awesome wraps and a variety of juices. I also like to go there for their cruelty free body products like soup, shampoo, and conditioner. If you're vegan, you just have to make sure it doesn't have honey. On Thursdays, they have this Open Mic night and it's very welcoming.

Pros: Great Environment, Friendly Staff, Great Food

Cons: Sometimes Out of Stock

good food, great atmosphere

Lots of vegan products - most from local producers - and a cute cafe upstairs that makes AMAZING juices. I give it four stars simply because I wasn't impressed with the vegan sushi. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!

Consistently Improving Itself...

UPDATED: Over the last year and a half or so I have noticed great improvement in the co-op. Signage has improved and they also updated their Bulk Spices area making the area much easier and faster to use. The new management/direction is a positive which is why I have given the co-op 3 cows now. If improvements improve I will move this up again.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (2 cows): I love co-ops as a concept but I have to say this is the least organized co-op I have encountered. Basically, figure out what items are worth it for you to get here and get those items here.

On a super positive note, they carry these carob dipped rice cakes in peanut butter and mint that are AMAZING! Try these!!!

That being said, this is also a worthy choice if you wish to pick up bulk items. I stock up on rolled oats and organic spices at half to a fourth of the cost of me buying these items individually in a regular store. Just bring your own container and have the staff measure & tare the container so that you can refill it each time you come (make sure you ask them to write the weight on the container to save you time).

This is a small location and from my understanding, I ended my membership at the end of last year, they are in a management transition phase and are working on making the store operate better. These changes are not yet visible to me as a sporadic shopper though.

Some of the reasons why I ended my membership were disorganization and lack of stock of the few items I could only get at this location. I also found that some of the items I thought I could only get here can be brought at Anna's Health Food Store in Highland Park across the river.

Our family loves the co-op!

We originally looked into the co-op because I wanted to surround myself with people interested in health and wellness.....we could not be happier in choosing to join the George Street Co-op!! Joining gets you discounts on the products you buy...sometimes as much as 15-25%! There is always a committee you can join for free to discuss whatever you are passionate about, and of course being in-the-know about the coolest, most delicious, healthiest products out there! I give this place 2 green-thumbs up, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

Co-ops Are Great!

I live up in Basking Ridge, so unfortunately, I only get to shop here once in a while. George Street Co-op has a nice selection of organic produce and bulk items. If I lived closer, I'd absolutely be a member of the co-op. The staff is very helpful as well.

Pros: nice assortment, organic and eco freindly operation

Cons: a bit expensive if you're not a member

Forget the trendy chain stores, go here!

George Street Co-Op is the New Brunswick area's source for vegan and vegetarian food. Not everything is vegetarian mostly the vitamins and the staff themselves are mostly un-informed non-vegans. But at least you don't have to support a corporate chain and smell the stench of death while you shop!

Pros: local co-op, good selection

Cons: can be pricey, non-vegetarian items, non-vegan staff
