I had first read about this place on happycow, and have stopped in on two previous trips to Maui. Was just here again in December 2012, and here's my Down To Earth Deli Cafe review update.
Read moreDown to Earth Market has several locations all together on the Hawaiian islands. In Maui, there's used to be a small store with deli foods in Makawao as well as one in Lahaina, but they've both closed for many years This one is the currently the only location in Maui.
The food area is immediately to the right upon entering the store. There is a salad bar, hot foods bar, deli counter, and service counter where you can order sandwiches, wraps, veggie burgers, juices and smoothies.
The salad and hot foods bar area features both lacto-veg as well as vegan food. Dairy is labeled. On any given day there might be 5-6 vegan hot dishes (brown rice, beans, baked tofu, a curry, a potato dish, etc.). Food is price by weight at $9.50 per pound (as of Dec 2012), which can get slightly expensive.
You help yourself to the hot foods and salad bar, then go over to the deli counter to order other stuff. Then you pay and take the food upstairs or outside to eat.
The second floor space is relaxed and spacious. I would recommend getting lunch here.

Tearing up writing this I love this store/deli so much. I run a restaurant — if I opened the grocery store of my dreams … this would be it (would be all vegan in my dreams but vegetarianism aside I love how they have designed the stores). The deli and hot/cold buffet by weight is my happy place. Like I actively wish I was there pretty much at all times. The options are just incredible, the salad bar stunning. The soup, the chili…. . Once I went to one of the Honolulu locations, and they had the most incredible eggplant parm, I wanted to get back there again before leaving .. and we didn’t. I was so sad and it’s remained an ongoing fight between my husband and I LOL. As a Canadian with our dollar always being so trash — EVERYTHING is so expensive on Maui so if I spend anywhere I’m happy for it to be here. Never ever disappointing. We will usually pack basics like rice/nootch/noodles to be able to budget better and indulge here at least a couple times. They also have breakfast wraps and stuff on the buffet to grab and go before you hop on a flight, it’s on the way to the airport so usually our first and last stop.

Fully veg grocery store, tons of delicious vegan food - Edit
This place was such a treat. A fully vegetarian grocery store with plenty of vegan options everywhere. The hot and salad bars are mostly vegan and totally scrumptious. There were many to-go sandwiches and other items you can bring to your hotel just save on overpriced and mediocre vegan options. Will definitely come back!

It was so fun to walk around and explore all their options! Tons of snacks, produce, and freezer items along with a great hot bar and pre-made foods. Grabbed some vegan vanilla cake which was perfect and even some San Diego Tempeh that I have been wanting to try! What a treat!

This is definitely the most vegan friendly store I have EVER been in. Vegan prepared foods, vegan desserts, vegan items at the deli… it’s not gourmet food but it is definitely pretty dang good and filling. Love this place!

Nice grocery store with lots of vegan options including at the deli and hot food bar area. I grabbed a cashew and broccoli soup, half a tofu scramble wrap, and an iced latte. Both the soup and wrap were okay but needed more flavor, I should have grabbed hot sauce and black pepper. The deli also has smoothies available.

I loveddd this place. A vegans dream. Had the earth burger from the hot bar & it was good. Not life changing but good. Also grabbed a vegan banana bread & it was Devine! If only we had something like this near where I live, I’d go here everyday I swear.

This was definitely our favorite place to eat on Maui. We got food from the buffet almost every day. Most of the choices were vegan and there was a lot of variety. Choose your container size and serve yourself. There is seating upstairs and outside. Free wi-fi. Store opens early and closes late.

Good vegan options - Edit
They had quite a few options here, ranging from açaí bowls to more “real” food. I had a pitaya smoothie bowl which was pretty good. They also had lots of vegan baked goods, I tried the double chocolate chip cookie which was delicious.
