Good food from a vegan menu - Edit
Enjoyed the whole experience. My husband and I ate at the upstairs bar. We asked for the vegan menu and were presented with a number of good-looking options. We split the guacamole/nachos appetizer followed by the mushroom & cauliflower quesadillas and a veggie burrito.....all were excellent! I had an Upgrade Margarita which was good-sized and tasty. Bartenders were personable and atmosphere was fun.

Vegan menu - Edit
They have a vegan menu, which is amazing in newport. Many things on the menu are total hit, while others are a big miss.
Read moreDefinitely try their salsas and guacamole. Their chips are made in the same fryer as the meat items, which is gross (I think you can bring your own chips). If you can get over the chip thing - go for the loaded nachos with vegan sausage. It is awesome.
The veggie burrito is HUGE and oh so good.
The vegan street tacos are also good.
The 5th ward salad is super yummy.
They do take some walk-ins but the wait can be long, so make a reservation well in advance (especially in the summer).
The ambiance is very casual/California punk (no joke - they are the only restaurant I have been to with a play list that includes the Sex Pistols).
Eat outside if you can!

Vegan Menu option - Edit
They now have a separate vegan menu! Some of the offerings include nachos, fried tofu tacos, “cheesy” fries, enchiladas, and quesadillas. They have vegan cheese, vegan sausage, and tofu in addition to typical vegan offerings (veggies, rice, beans, etc). The food was delicious and the restaurant is in a great location right by the water! Definitely worth checking out.

Okay food but they do have a vegan menu - Edit
I got bad service, but overall the food was okay, cheap compared to many other places in Newport but it was nothing special. Got the vegan burrito and it was great pretty bland

Lots of options, okay food - Edit
We were pumped to come to Diegos. Overall I would say the food is fair. They have a separate vegan menu and knowledgeable staff which is great in an area with almost no vegan options. While there are tons of options including loaded fries, quesadillas, tacos, and nachos, our food was just okay tasting-pretty bland. To be fair we only tried the tofu tacos and mushroom quesadilla which were pretty underwhelming in flavor-I don’t recommend them. We did get two drinks which were fantastic (margarita and mezcal mixed drink). The staff was very pleasant, attentive, and helpful. I would be willing to try them again. Prices are fair for the area and portion size.

Great place - Edit
In an area full of snooty people and uptight establishments this place is a great find. Full on vegan menu. It says ‘no substitutions to avoid mistakes’ but they did do subs for us so who knows how strict that is. Very tasty and good value for the money. Particularly in an area where food can be very $$$. Ita a mexicali type place with street style tacos, salads and burritos are the main go-tos. They also have fries. If this is something you like you wont be disappointed.

Separate vegan menu! - Edit
Diego's is my go-to restaurant when I'm in Newport because they offer a completely separate vegan menu and vegan cheese! Vegan options are numerous and include street tacos, fried tofu tacos, korean bbq tacos, verde tostadas, grilled avocado, pimentos de sal, crack fries, mushroom and cauliflower quesadillas, grilled corn quesadillas, cali burrito, and enchiladas. Vegan appetizers include guacamole, vegan nachos, and salsa 4 ways. I've tried all three of the tacos as well as the guacamole and I was very happy with all of them. I highly recommend Diego's if you don't feel like having to customize your order or ask a bunch of questions.

Veg Options in Newport - Edit
I was in Newport for a bachelorette weekend and decided to make a reservation at Diego's for Saturday night and was not disappointed! They have a separate vegan menu which has all the items like nachos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas etc. We got the nachos as an appetizer and ordered a second plate they were so good! I had a cali wrap with grilled tofu and a side of spanish rice that were also delicious! Staff was friendly and the decor was fun. Not sure when I'll be in Newport again but when I am I will definitely come to Diego's again.

We had a great dinner with drinks here. We ordered everything off the vegan menu. We chose the nachos to start which were huge then the enchilada plate and the quesadillas. I loved everything but the quesadillas were probably my favorite.

Meh - Edit
The top of the menu says No Substitutions, but the bottom says substitute tofu for $2, vegan cheese for $2. Ordered the huevos rancheros with tofu instead of egg, left a lot to be desired. This also seems to be a late nice place, so smells of stale beer, even outside.

Punk decor, with a separate vegan menu with some good options. We had the roasted veggie nachos to start, which were great, the Korean BBQ tofu tacos, and the fried tofu and pickled onion tacos. All really good & nice to have so many choices. The drinks are good too!

Food was pretty good...not the best Mexican but it was good. My only real complaint was the cold air coming in from the door. Was happy to have something different as an option.

Wish the Korean BBQ tacos werevegan - Edit
Mildly biased because I miss the barbecue kimchi tacos from my pre-veg days, but I do wish they would let you substitute tofu into more dishes. Plenty of options can be made vegetarian or vegan, but they overcharge for tiny amounts of guacamole

If You Like Loud - Edit
If you like it loud then this is the place for you. It can be a bit confusing too because you approach the restaurant through the downstairs bar area and there's no apparent hostess stand.

Pros: The burrito and the mini quesadillas they may vega

Finally! - Edit
It’s awesome to finally see Diego’s on this website! As a local to the area, I always went to Diego’s for drinks and didn’t bother to look at their menu as I assumed it was vegan friendly. I was very wrong however. There is nothing labeled as vegan on the menu but if you ask your server for veggie options, they’ll hook you up! I always go for the nachos with veggies, sub vegan cheese (daiya pepper jack!!), no aoili, and I always end up taking some home! If your visiting in Newport and want to stop in, keep in mind it gets extremely busy for dinner and you’ll be waiting 1-2 hours for a table!
