Special place for special occasions - Edit
I tried the special cuisine of this restaurant twice and have been a fan of it right after the first time. For me - as a student - about 40€ for a menu of four dishes and a drink is a lot of money but it is seriously worth it. For me this is the place to go for special occasions.
Read moreI really like the waitress who recognized me when I came for the second time (weeks later) and also did the chef who is the boss as well. He uses to great his guests personally and talk a little about his restaurant and ideas. By the way the waitress is really into her job and knows everything about the food and ingredients what - unfortunately - is not common practice nowadays.
The dishes are something really special (it´s not just the gorgeus mushrooms you can watch growing underground, but also the bread baked without flour!) and it´s a good idea to let yourself be surprised (you don´t know what you get if you choose the complete menu) but if you have any allergies it´s no problem for them.
But what you need to know is that you probably will not be full because the dishes are not that big and it´s more about quality than quantity.
I also really enjoyed the vegan wine and grape juice.

We were on our vegan tour in the Moselle at the "Weinstube 100% vegan," the restaurant of the "Hotel Nicolay 1881."
Read moreThere, we had pasta with spinach, a vegan meat stew with vegetables, and a vegan cream schnitzel with fries. The ambiance is clean and reminiscent of the 1960s style. The portions are very large and delicious! There is an awesome wine card, too!
The service was friendly and accommodating. We found almost nothing that wasn't perfect, except that the meat stew was a bit too greasy... but otherwise, everything was perfect.
We would love to come back. Whether for hikers, a quick stop, or hotel guests, I have never eaten so well in a German hotel like here. As a vegan in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, one should have been here at least once!

Wenn es zügig gehen muss oder Herzhaftes bevorzugt wird, nehmt die Karte der Sonnenuhr mit leckeren, teils rustikalen, aber immer pfiffigen Sattmachern, Feines und Edles gibt es dann in den Überraschungsmenüs oder der legendären Pilzplatte (eigener Anbau!) in der Weinstube.
Ich könnte mich hier noch ewig auslassen, schlage jedoch einfach einen Besuch hier vor.

Es gibt an dieser Adresse zwei Restaurants in Europas wohl größten, komplett veganen Hotel.
Auf der Sonnenterrasse kann man von beiden Karten wählen, in den jeweiligen Restaurants nur von der spezifischen Karte.

Starter was a mushroom and orange carpaccio, which was very refreshing and perfectly seasoned. Then it was a seitan steak that was quite salty. It also came with a cappellini pasta and asparagus. Dessert was a chocolate mousse with Tonka bean ice cream, rhubarb compotes and stewed berries. Light and refreshing. Overall quite full.
Would come here again.
The lunch place in the same all vegan hotel is Die Sunnenhuhr (the sundial). I ordered the schnitzel, but didn’t order any sauce which was in the steak. My partner ordered a burger. Both are quite disappointing unfortunately

It's a nice vegan restaurant in a good location in an area where there's not that much vegan to be found.

It can get pretty busy on the weekends, so especially if you want to sit in the outdoor seating areas, it's best to make reservations.
They have burgers, flammkuchen, schnitzel.... all vegan.
The only downside is the service, only a couple of people (the owner and another girl) speak English.
It took a translation app on my phone, now the waitress was so bored with that, it really felt like she was avoiding us (bored because of us, or bored because she didn't speak English was hard to tell).
Pros: Nice vegan restaurant, Excellent vegan proposal

We had different burgers and a samosa, and while one burger was quite alright, the other one had a really strange patty. It was chewy and… just really strange. The Samosa was okay-ish. For dessert we ordered a piece of cheezecake and banana ice cream. The ice cream tasted really artificial and the cake wasn’t great either, but reallyyyy pricy.

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights with all inclusive breakfast buffet and three course dinners. There are other lunch/dinner options available, as well as a variety of cakes. All the wines are vegan, too. The breakfast buffet is outstanding, and the No-chicken burger is a must. We’re planning on coming back, mostly for the food.

We booked the surprise 3 course menu. It was super delicious. The starter was a Green Crepes with a Carott Creme filling. Anyway, since no dish will be like the other in future I can just highly recommend this place. The main course was delicious and a lot. The Dessert was also home made and delicious..

Vegane Auszeit an der Mosel - Edit
Ein Wanderurlaub an der Mosel brachte uns fünf Tage in den Genuss des köstlichen veganen Essens im Vegan Hotel Nicolay 1881 Zur Post. Der Besitzer Johannes hat zunächst eine klassische Kochausbildung gemacht und über 20 Jahre konventionell gearbeitet, bis er Anfang der 2010er mit der veganen Idee in Kontakt kam, zunächst experimentierte und dann seine ganze Küche auf vegan umstellte. Seine Gerichte sind so auch ganz klassischen Geschmackskompositionen nachempfunden: Möhren imitieren Lachs, Seitan kombiniert mit Rote Bete Schinken. Dabei schafft er es, den Geschmack zu imitieren, ohne das Gefühl zu vermitteln, es könne sich vielleicht doch tatsächlich um Fisch oder Fleisch handeln: Optik, Sensorik und Geschmacksdrumherum stimmen perfekt, das letzte Quentchen (vor dem wir als langjährige Vegetarier / Veganer ein bisschen Angst hatten) des Fleisch- und Fischgeschmacks war dann zum Glück doch nicht vorhanden. Das Hotelarrangement - Übernachtung, Frühstücksbuffet und 3gängiges Menü am Abend – brachte uns in den Genuss, Gerichte zu probieren, die wir wohl von einer Karte nicht gewählt hätten, die aber allesamt vollkommen köstlich waren. Dazu gibt es eine gute Auswahl an örtlichem veganen Wein und - jetzt im Herbst - sehr leckerem Federweissen. Am Nachmittag wird auf einer kleinen Tafel innen vor dem Servicebereich angekündigt, welche Speisen das Menü umfasst. Bei uns wäre das am letzten Tag ein Kidneybohnensteak gewesen, wegen einer Unverträglichkeit von Kidneybohnen bei einem von uns ging die Stimmung bereits in den Keller, wir haben das aber beim Service frühzeitig (!) am Nachmittag angebracht und so wurde am Abend stattdessen ein Sojasteak in gleicher Zubereitung serviert. Der Service ist freundlich und überwiegend engagiert. Die Räumlichkeiten des Restaurants und der Weinstube sind irgendwie in der Entstehungszeit von 1968 stecken geblieben, den Willen zur behutsamen Modernisierung kann man in der Postkutsche, wo ab Mittag der sehr leckere vegane Kuchen serviert wird, erkennen. Das Bonbon für Hotelgäste: eine kostenfreie Weinprobe im Heinrichshof, einem veganen Weingut, das seine Proberäumlichkeiten nur wenige hundert Meter die Strasse hinauf eingerichtet hat.

Big portions, expensive - Edit
My boyfriend had the Schnitzel with mushroom sauce, it was very delicious. I had the Nicolay 3.0 burger, which was a little bit dry (I ordered an extra portion mayonnaise for 1,5€). The patty was try and in my opinion not really delicious also the fried shiitakes where tasteless and not worth the money (4,5€).

If you wanna try traditional German Schnitzel go there nur I won’t recommend you the Nicolay burger 3.0 or the fried Shiitakes.
Also I’m sure the other dishes are nice too. We’ve been there on a very hot day (35-37 degrees) so this might also be the reason for that everything was to dry for me. Also in my opinion it would be nice to have the possibility to choose fries or salad when ordering the Schnitzel.

You can choose between 2 course to 5 course menu and you get a suprise menu accourding to your preferences and allergies. We had a salad with fried shitake mushrooms, seitan steaks with zoodles and regular noodles and a delicious combination of vegan desserts. It was so delicious and I will always come back. 😊
