Not Safe For Vegans - Edit
I loved the food here, so so much! So it fills me with incredible sadness to have to leave this review.
Read moreThis restaurant sells meals on the Too Good to Go app. Sometimes I call and ask if they have vegan meals left over, and they either tell me yes or no. Today they said yes, so I placed the order and went. When I walked up to the counter an older woman asked me what I ordered, and I told her, again reiterating that I needed it to be vegan. She said yes. I took the bag. I ran an errand and then came home to eat. The lights were dim, and I ate a few bites of beans and what I thought was seitan. That is until I bit into a piece of bone. I turned on my flashlight and realized it was chicken.
Real upsetting, but mistakes do happen. Given that I loved this restaurant, I called to try to sort it out. The same woman answered. I tried to explain that it's very important to not mix up orders for vegans, and she hung up on me. I called back immediately and she claimed I hung up on her. I know that's not true because my phone was on speaker and my fingers were not near the buttons, but fine, I tried to move past it. I repeated that I received the wrong thing and it's very important for that not to happen. She immediately began to shout at me that if I had asked for vegan I would have gotten vegan. Yup, gaslighting - well, I don't abide that. Domestic violence survivor, been there before, not doing it again. I continue to tell the truth: I walked in and asked for a vegan meal, and she confirmed that she had given me one. She continued to shout that I was not telling the truth and that she was the one working so she knows. I asked to speak to a manager. She said she was the manager. I asked if there was another manager on staff I could speak to, she said no. I asked her if she was the owner, she said yes. I repeated that I loved the food and I didn't want to have to stop going. She continued to shout that I had not asked for vegan food. I was getting nowhere and I was done being shouted at, so I hung up.
I've looked online and confirmed that this was the owner, Annabelle Goodridge. So yes, I'm not able to recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesn't eat meat, and there's no chance that there's anyone over her who will remedy this situation. I'll be on the lookout for another Caribbean restaurant.
Pros: Delicious vegan dishes, Easy parking, Authentic flavors
Cons: Fed me meat and didn't care

It is okay - Edit
I like how local this place is but the vegan food is alright. I've found that the better plate is the vegan chicken plate but it still has a little more salt on it than I would like. The plates are about $20 each and the portion is generous but the food is just alright. Good to come here with your non vegan friends

Good food, not open often - Edit
Coco breeze has a lot of interesting vegan items on their menu, most of which are pretty good. I just wish they were open more than 3 days a week.

Vegan Caribbean Food - Edit
I ordered the curry tofu with Creole rice. It was a large portion that came with fried plantains and a pineapple side salad.
Read moreI really wanted to like this dish, but the tofu had a strange rubbery texture which I didn’t enjoy. The Creole rice was good but not very flavorful.
I will say that the fried plantains and pineapple salad were amazing.
Pros: Vegan options, Affordable, Lovely presentation

Authentic caribbean flavors with separate labeled vegan menu - Edit
Coco breeze is a newly-opened restaurant storefront with a well-established catering business. Inside, they have an order/pickup window with 1-2 tables, with an additional 6 tables spaced out on the sidewalk in front. They were providing hand sanitizer and everyone was making some effort to keep physical distancing during the pandemic. Most of their business was takeout, which they do really well, packing meals in containers while preserving cute plating (including flowers!!). Unfortunately the only delivery currently available is through Postmates but I'm thinking they'll have more options soon. We ordered in person and it only took 15 minutes for food to be ready to go, so that's also an option.
Read moreFood was authentic -- meaning many dishes are spicy, so be sure to ask if you don't want that. Some menu items were labeled "dinner", but that just meant it included sides; everything is available all day. We really enjoyed the bold flavors of each dish coming through. I was comfortable that the dishes are fully vegan and there were plenty of choices. And I liked that they have a somewhat healthful emphasis.
I will order takeout again and look for opportunities to use them for catering. And it is extra great to be able to support a black- and woman-owned business!
Pros: Authentic, varied flavors, Well-labeled vegan dishes
Cons: Limited parking and not easily transit-accessible

Fantastic vegan flavors - Edit
Just opened in early August, 2020, this cute restaurant with lots of socially distanced outdoor sidewalk tables is already hopping. From the seven vegan entree options, we tried the Jackfruit with Veggie Rice and the Vegan Curry "Chicken" and Channa with Veggie Rice, and both were amazingly flavorful. None of the vegan meats are deep fried so no worries about contamination. They have lunch and dinner portions. We're definitely coming back to try out more of the selections. The desserts were limited to two different bundt cakes, and of course for our Happy Cow friends we had to try at least one, the Caramel Drizzled Maca Cacao cake, and it was as awesome as it sounds! All desserts are all-vegan, all the time, and advertised as "enhanced by high-nutrient superfoods and adaptogens." Staff was super friendly and they have special events advertised with live music and DJs.
