Delightful spot for weekend brunch - Edit
We came on a Saturday so had the choice of the all vegan lunch and weekend brunch menu. The Benedict was out of this world and the burger with polenta fries equally impressive. Treat yourself to one of their boutique cocktails or a delectable desert ... it’s all plant based and delicious! Wide range of options for the health conscious and those looking for some comfort food. The prices were very reasonable given its location.

Excellent UES Eating - Edit
I've been to Candle 79 a couple of times now. The menu was slightly different each time. The first time I was impressed with what they did with tofu, the second time it was their seitan skewers that really blew my mind.

Amazing - Edit
The best seitan I’ve ever eaten in my life. I’ve recently been eating more seitan and have tried a lot but this was simply to die for.

Excellent Food, Cozy Atmosphere - Edit
I took my wife here for her birthday and we both really liked it. It was a bit of a schlep to get here from Brooklyn but well worth it. All parts of the meal were excellent. They have a very nice cocktail menu, which includes drinks with egg replacer to give it the froth traditionally created in some drinks using egg whites. I had a did infused Manhattan which was really good. The highlight of my meal was the eggplant parmigiana. Wow - so flavorful and better than any cheese based equivalent I tried before I went vegan. It is not cheap at all but they deliver on the food. Interestingly it was an mostly older (read senior citizen) crowd there but I suppose that is related to its location.

The BEST! - Edit
I eat here every time I come back to NY to visit my family. L A has great vegan restaurants, but Candle79 remains my all-time, enduring favorite. Freshly prepared and creative entrees and desserts. The service is always excellent. Servers always ask about any food allergies.

Fantastic Experience - Edit
We traveled with whole food plant based friends seeking the best dinning experience in NYC. It was a very close competition between Dirt Candy and Candle 79. Candle 79 gets my vote. My wife tries hard to avoid all forms of cooking oil; Candle 79 was able to accommodate her easily. I enjoy vegetables prepared as vegetables with interesting flavors through sauces. The maple, ginger sweet potatoes were to die for. Finally the service was most attentive without being intrusive.

Disappointing - Edit
I was disappointed by Candle 79. I had heard about it for years and was expecting to have my socks knocked off. Instead, I felt I paid a high price for ordinary food.
Read moreI shared the mushroom crepes and pizzetta with a friend. The food wasn't bad, but was under seasoned and especially disappointing for what we paid for it.
The atmosphere was pretty, however, I would skip this place and visit another vegan restaurant in the city.
Pros: pretty atmosphere
Cons: expensive, food not that tasty

Happy Cow said this was the closest vegan restaurant to the museum. Why not go, right? Reviews look great!
Read moreThere is a Gluten Free menu, which I used to order my meal. It had a wide selection of food, drinks, and dessert.
The food quality and preparation expertise was well above any expectation. Everything arrived hot, cooked for its perfect flavor.
The meal was so delicious, my friend and I barely spoke when we were eating. You won't be disappointed.

Candle 79 did not disappoint! - Edit
Loved the upstairs seating by the window. Very attentive staff & asked if there were any allergies, which we thought was great, thoughtful for guests. Terrific menu, lots of options. We had the artichoke special, empanadas, Seitan piccata, wheat balls in a great tomatoes sauce...all delicious.

The service was fantastic, and the Seitan skewer appetizer was hands down our most favorite Seitan in NYC. The Seitan Piccata and Moroccan Spiced Chickpea cake were tasty but nothing crazy.

Delicious! - Edit
So many great choices! The mushroom crepes with arugula shaved fennel and beet salad were fabulous and I don’t usually like beets! My husband had the biscuits and gravy which he found really tasty. We also tried the Benedict with tempeh bacon and potato cake and cauliflower Hollandaise - really delicious. We carried out empanadas to try at home (can you tell we live in an area without a ton of vegan choices?!) and while I haven’t had mine yet, my husband said it was really good. We will be going back to Candle 79 next time we’re in NYC.
