Bliss is beautiful - Edit
I love Bliss. They're one of the oldest vegan restaurants in this area (10+ years in 2024), and they've made their place a sort of community hub.
Read moreMy favorite thing is the buffet because there are a variety of tasty and colorful items to choose from. I bring containers for myself and friends because Bliss gives a discount if you do. Then they weigh the containers and determine the price.
My other favorite thing is the creekside dining, right across from the restored Mission and the plaza surrounding it. It's just so nice to sit outside on a warm day and hear the birdsong and trickling water while enjoying a healthy, tasty meal.
There's a beer and burger joint next door for people who don't want to try vegan food. My niece and her boyfriend ordered from there, while my partner and I ordered from Bliss. We sat outdoors on the Bliss side of the patio and had our meals fairly quickly, but they had to keep going back to see where their food was. It took about half an hour, but finally they brought their meals to the table and we could all start eating. Everything on their styrofoam plates was some shade of tan/brown: a pile of fries here, a brown patty on a white sesame bun over there. I didn't even see a green pickle. It was such a stark contrast to our actual plates, which were covered with food and bursting with colors, and I could see them noticing.
The only problem with Bliss is the parking. It's right downtown and for some reason the traffic people working for the City have been cutting parking spaces. For disabled people, it's a real challenge to get there. The owners of Bliss are on it though, holding those traffic guys accountable for making it hard for their customers.

Bliss Cafe is a staple - Edit
Bliss Cafe is a solid staple for trips to SLO. My boyfriend and I like to get food from there to go before boarding the train back to the Bay Area.

The 4 star rating is based on today's experience. I wish I could leave 4.5 stars. I've never been disappointed by anything at Bliss, but the Buddha Wrap tasted too strongly of the coconut or other oil used for cooking up the fillings. The tofu scramble was A on the flavor and comfort with flavors of nutritional yeast and mustard shining through.
Definitely go to Bliss when you are in or passing through SLO.

We had lunch there and it was really good. The food was tasty. You take what you want from the buffet and it’s weighed afterwards. The price was okay for being organic food. The staff was friendly and the outside seating area is nice and quiet.

Their little buffet area with to-go options is really REALLY yummy, and at $13/lb you can fill a small container for pretty cheap (I paid $9)-- unless you bring your own to-go container, then you'd be paying $11/lb! It's really cool that they're promoting a low waste lifestyle alongside serving delicious vegan food. It shows in their compostable packaging and reusable/plastic-free merchandise. I only wish their bowl lids and to-go sauce containers were also compostable or at least more likely to be recycled (they had a 5 in the recycling symbol).

This little cafe has tables but the real draw is lunch take-away. They have menu items or a buffet, and the buffet is significantly reduced in price if you bring your own container. There is menu overlap with the buffet so definitely check the buffet before ordering because you can get a decent deal (and faster meal) if the thing you want is already there.
Read moreThe food is definitely healthy and hearty. Some of it is a little old-school vegan (steamed kale, blanched but not really marinated tempeh) and some of it is a little more creative. The buffet had several protein sources (tofu, tempeh, two kinds of beans) and there are also pre-made salads to go. As a result there’s really something for everyone in this cute place.

Been awhile since I've eaten at Bliss, but I'm sure glad I did today. I ordered "Protein Buddha", and it was a mountain of deliciousness. I love lacinto kale, the dark green stuff, and Buddha blessed me with a generous serving. Thin squares of fried tofu and chunks of yukon gold potato were arranged on a bed of black beans and rice, plus sliced avocado and a mild dressing on the side. $18. The dish was tasty enough without the dressing, but I dipped some tofu in it and enjoyed the added flavor. Who knew vegan food could be this good?

Cozy Cafe and has a buffet! Promotes bring your own container which is great, but when you order from the menu to try and go waste free they bring disposable containers and plastic cutlery anyway. Had the cinnamon roll, pancakes, and cheesy scramble and loved it!!

We found Bliss by accident while we were a bit frazzled and famished. It's located in an unassuming, indoor alley. The people working there exude warmth and peace. The food is fresh and vibrant. And then, as you walk out to the outdoor eating patio you realize you're overlooking a lush creek with view of the old Mission. We had the Green Energy Bowl with Rice and Greens Combo, Sauerkraut, and Tempe. It was so nourishing with a beautiful gingery sauce. Our daughter enjoyed the Creamy Vegan Mac, which is a cold macaroni salad, bursting with flavorful vegetables.

Stopped off here on our drive from Long Beach to San Fran. My partner and I shared a Vegan Breakfast Burrito and Single stack of pancakes.
Read moreBurrito was great! Huge portion size filled with delicious chili. I had to double check that it was vegan. Pancakes were great, super light and fluffy with loads of maple syrup.
Coffee was great. English breakfast tea was also available.
We visited first thing in the morning, staff were really friendly, wait time was a little long but they were really busy.

The whole establishment seems like an uplifting spot. When I arrived there was a market happening on the back patio, great music playing and delicious smells filling the interior space. My partner had the buffet (delicious) and I had the burrito! I’m definitely coming back for another burrito. Can’t speak to the other food but the buffet and burrito were so good.

We were in town visiting and ate here twice, the chili yesterday for dinner was good. Unfortunately when we showed up, we assumed there was a menu of items to choose from but their regular all-day menu changes in the afternoon and they only offer a few items after 4pm. We gave it another try this morning for breakfast. My husband ordered the Reuben sandwich, it was stuffed full of sprouts, the tomato slice didn’t look fresh, the bread wasn’t toasted and the tempeh was ice cold and looked old. He tried to eat a couple bites and had to throw it away. I ordered the breakfast tacos with avocado. The avocado cost extra, no problem there, I completely understand, except the avocado they used was clearly going bad, it was mushy and had dark bits throughout every slice. I was surprised to see it in that condition right there on top of the tacos, it really threw off the presentation and experience of eating here, especially since we had been looking forward to coming here after reading all the good reviews. Besides the bad avo, the tacos were still just average, nothing exciting, especially for the price. I had also ordered a strawberry omega smoothie, it was thin and watery, it tasted mostly like a runny banana drink, not much “strawberry smoothie” to it. Customer service was also lacking, either absent or not exceptionally friendly. I don’t blame the employees, perhaps it needs better management, cook training and food storage practices. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on there but I wish them the best. Overall after this experience, we won’t be back.

The Ruben is disappointing - Edit
I ordered the Ruben and it was so bland. They don’t seem to marinate or flavor the tempeh and there was no sauce on the sandwich other than vegan Mayo. This is the type of food that makes meat eaters think that vegan food sucks.

Came here on a Tuesday for lunch to take away. They have a nice assortment of plant-based snacks, drinks, products to browse while you wait for your food. Took maybe 10-15 minutes.
Read moreI ordered the Reuben sandwich with potatoes and the plant power burger with the daily soup (yellow lentil with ginger and sweet potato). Half a sandwich already filled us up but we persevered and finished both. There was a bit too much Mayo in both sandwiches, would probably ask to skip it next time. The plant burger was more satisfying but the Reuben was more refreshing. Too bad the Reuben wasn’t on the classic rye bread, was sourdough instead.
Paid parking on the street. I might be back here as they seem like they have a good variety of offerings.
