Not family friendly - Edit
I was traveling through the state with my family and stopped in for a meal. The pictures and reviews were so promising, I was very excited. When we first walked in the waitress asked if we wanted crayons and a coloring sheet for our 11 month old son which I thought was a good sign. While waiting for our food I set out my son's bottle, gave him an applesauce pouch and some puffs. The waitress came over and her exact words were "can you keep the snacking to a minimum? I was trying to be cool about it but..." and then gestured to his bottle and puffs. I understand restaurants don't want outside food, but when it's for an 11 month old baby it's usually accepted. I simply said "sure" then put away his puffs. This was not a very good first impression. The food itself was not any better than we cook at home. The jackfruit tacos just tasted like the grill, not much seasoning. The Mac n cheese was dry and turning brown (I shared a photo of it as well). It reminded me of one of my recipe disasters when we first started eating vegan. The Reuben was really good, and the squash nuggets were as well. I'm not sure if the 'no baby snacks' is a company policy or just the waitress, but that along with the embarrassing Mac n cheese is enough to not recommend the restaurant to anyone else.
Read morePros: The reuben was good, Plenty of options
Cons: Asked that we not feed snacks to our baby, Mac n cheese is unappetizing to look at and to eat

Good vegan food - Edit
Bean is a simple place with 100% plant based food. The main entrees we got were really good. The sides could use a little more flavoring as they were bland. Overall, I would come back.

Shake and chilli were great but I felt I can’t give them a 4 star because the main dishes need some extra love. Other than that, great fast food place.

Lots of yummy options here - Edit
We tried a bunch of the sides and the cowboy burger. Everything was good and not out of this world. My daughter loved the softserve. My hubby loved the kitty kat cake which was almost a peanut butter kit kat. Would go again. They also sell their burger mix so we picked up a pouch for home.

Cheap and cheerful Southern food - Edit
Bean doesn't have any fancy pretences, it's just good, old fashioned Southern food, made vegan! I went with two locals who have been enough to know it inside and out, for better and worse, and they had a few complaints.

I love Bean! I couldn’t begin to guess how many times I have eaten here! I love the Brunch Bowl, the Burger, everything I have tried has been wonderful! The desserts are too sweet for me. But, I prefer my dessert with much less sugar than most people

Delicious casual foods, burgers, bowls, jackfruit tacos. The desserts are great! Try the “crab”cakes or the “meat”loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and thank me later.

We'll call it comfort food... - Edit
It's vegan junk food--burgers, fried stuff--but it's freaking good! The seitan bacon is yummy. It's sad that there are not more vegan restaurants in Asheville.

Food with no flavor. - Edit
If you are a foodie or just a sensible person who knows how to cook, avoid this place. The food has no flavor, the fried tofu was literally unseasoned and just with salt. Pictures make the food look as if care is taken to make it, but it’s just unseasoned and unimaginative. I would give one star if I could.

Thank heavens for Bean!! - Edit
Im not going to pretend this is fine dining, or even the healthiest food, but it sure is good! So much good stuff I don’t know where to begin. The Good Burger tastes just like a Big Mac. I love that they use Harmony Valley Mix, it’s a lovely change of pace from Beyond/Impossible burgers. The Rueben is delicious, the collards are awesome! I feel so lucky to have this place in Asheville. With all the amazing options available these days, I do wish they would move away from using Daiya, but I wouldn’t let that slow me down.

YUM! avoided bean for a long time because i’d heard mediocre reviews, but i loved it! went twice in one month. buffalo cauliflower wings w/ ranch to start, and i got the korean bbq tofu finger salad. not a big fan of the crabbie patty but that’s just a personal preference thing. atmosphere inside isn’t stellar, bring a jacket because it’s cold.

Yummy vegan junk food - Edit
Absolutely delicious food!! This is Southern Comfort food done vegan and oh so good. The menu is massive so it may take you some time to decide!
Read moreCan recommend the crabbie patties and cheese steak. Yum!!! We loved that though it's comfort food, it's not overly salted or oily. You can always add some salt to give extra umf, but so many vegan junk food places make way too salty food so we were happy that wasn't the case here.
Slight misses were the gravy and Mac and cheese. Not bad but lacking in the layers of flavor found in their other dishes. Mac was basically just nutritional yeast sauce, gravy was similar.
Cheesecake was absolutely amazing!!! Made in house and topped with compote and whipped cream. Fantastic.
Don't let the basic, old school ambiance deter you - they make most of their food from scratch and it's super tasty! I will say that the atmosphere could do with some love, it's not very cozy and kind of feels like a chain.
Pros: Fantastic vegan junk food, Good prices
Cons: Atmosphere not the best , Some sides not flavorful

Yummy All-Vegan Spot! - Edit
We ventured out to Bean for dinner with our doggo. We were greeted warmly and they had ample outdoor seating. The portions were generous and the prices were very affordable, especially for a vegan place. The fried pickles and crabbie dip were awesome! My husband had the meatloaf and I had the Reuben—both were delicious! We tried the chocolate cake and the raspberry zinger cake, but we preferred the chocolate cake. Good bottled kombucha, too!

Yummy Junk Food & MILKSHAKES! - Edit
They call it comfort food, but it's really junk food and I guess we all know it. But even vegans need junk food sometimes.
Read moreI've been coming here somewhat regularly since they opened. It was exciting to have a second all-vegan, more-affordable restaurant in Asheville, with all those burger variations someone might miss. I didn't miss burgers after becoming vegan, but I de enjoy having the options of various kinds of vegan cheeseburgers, seitan cheesesteaks, and really yummy brunches.
A couple years ago, Bean expanded and updated their menu selections, which I appreciated, as I get easily bored without new options. The food is tasty but, again, except for their house salad (which is filling and large) and the side of steamed kale, pretty junky. The macaroni and cheese is less than you might expect, so I would stay away from that; and the "fish" sandwiches remind me way too much of the real thing and made me kind of sick to my stomach. So, basically, the food tends toward a bit greasy and fried.
We've had a weird experience with the French fries, some being perfect; at other times, too soft or other times too burned. This may be attributable to the fact that Bean has a rather large employee turnover, and when you go you are never certain if you'll get someone who's super or would rather be anywhere else. I think this kind of sums up Bean as a whole: sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. They don't change their menu too frequently, especially their desserts -- ALTHOUGH they recently added a soft-serve ice cream machine and milkshake maker! FINALLY! I have been wondering for years why no vegan establishments had milkshakes! Now we do! However, the cakes, cookies, and kit kat pie have been around for years and the lack of variety gets a bit dull.
Finally, there is something kind of cold about this location. Literally the restaurant temperature is frequently uncomfortable, making me prefer to take food home. (Unless it's warm outside and you can eat outdoors). The food ingredients are pretty basic and corporate, like ConAgra (Hunt) ketchup which, honestly, probably has GMOs and Pepsi products. The ethics of that have bothered me from the beginning. (But yeah, I still go there). There is no concern for fair trade chocolate. I think there are two owners of Bean, and one is super nice. He's hardly there. The other is as cold as Snow Miser and as unfriendly as Heat Miser.
If you're craving junk food, this is a good place, but it might push your ethics.
Pros: All vegan, Milkshakes!, Parking is available
Cons: Cold, literally & some staff (incl 1 owner), No organic, mainly corporate ingredients, A bit out of the way
