Most incredible, memorable night - Edit
I can’t reccomend this gem more. I’ve been travelling for months and this evening stood out above anything I’ve ever had. The food was absolutely sensational, the space was so intimate and special, a single large round table which we all sat around. The host chatted to us whilst he cooked, telling us about his inspring life, and then played some piano as we ate. He used to be a professional pianist so the music was beautiful. It’s such a unique space, decorated amazingly and just the opposite to a normal restaurant. Don’t hesitate, go go go

Wow. - Edit
I’ve travelled the world as a vegan and this has got to be one of the most unique and special places I’ve stumbled upon. In the middle of the small place is one table where a group was already eating. Gerardo, the owner and chef welcomed us and told us to sit down and join them, immediately serving us delicious homemade soup made exclusively from produce from his and his friends gardens. He told us it was all we could eat soup and fresh guacamole made from his avocados for not even $7!!!!!! We made friends with the people we sat with as we shared life stories and Gerardo told us about his life and his permaculture knowledge. He’s truly doing something revolutionary at this place; the fact that the food was absolutely delicious and fresh was an added bonus!! I can’t recommend this place enough.

Delicious home made, organic food and all you can eat (large portion to begin with anyway). The owner is a long-time vegan and extremely warm, welcoming and affable. There’s a nice collection of books too. We loved it and it was nice to sit at a communal table with other travellers.

Homemade food - Edit
We have been here twice as the menu is different every day and I don't think if you get this one and one service anywhere else. Both times we had guacamole with some tortillas which was really nice a drink a main. All traditional food for 120 pesos and you can also have a cacao drink after your meal for 30 pesos which is really tasty. Highly recommend if you are looking for having a chat with a local who loves what he does and if you want to try local homemade food.

A unique vegan experience - Edit
Gerardo was the ultimate vegan Mexican chef and host. He welcomes you into his place with open arms and cooks wholesome and healthy meals, differing each day, depending on the organic products he has picked up from the market that morning. He will not let you leave hungry, he will offer you more food when you finish your plate, it literally is an “all you can eat” vegan feast. Great for those vegans with big appetites. I kept going back for more.

A Vegan Experience - Edit
As noted by other reviews and in the title, this restaurant is more an experience than anything else. And frankly, restaurant is not the right word since it is a small room with a single table. It’s really a one on one encounter with a San Cris local, Gerardo, who is literally putting his life and love into creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for plant based dining. The food was excellent, Gerardo is incredibly interesting and kind, and I can’t recommend highly enough visiting Art Librería when in SC.

Traditional Mayan Magic - Edit
There's no place in the city that is making food like this! Traditional Mayan Magic, full of flavor and love. All ingredients are organic, vegan, and most of the ingredients come from the zapatista's. The cafe is small, cozy, and filled with love. Gerardo loves to tell stories of Mexican history while preparing his magical dishes. If your in San Cristóbal this is a must!

I cannot recommend it more - Edit
In our time in San Cristobal my partner and I probably ate dinner with Gerardo seven times. I was lucky enough to find ArtLibreria on our first night, and we were welcomed so warmly and treated to the best Mayan food I've ever had. Gerardo cooks an all vegan, pre-Hispanic menu every day with ingredients sourced from organic, local Zapatista shops. The first course is always some kind of veggie soup, amazing veggie soup cooked fresh every day for 5 hours. The second (and sometimes third) course is a surprise, but always delicious. For dessert, you can have a powerful cacao. Come with a pretty empty stomach because you will leave barely able to walk home after. The servings are huge, and it is impossible to say no when Gerardo offers anything.
Read moreWe were also lucky enough to take a cooking class with Gerardo. It was an absolute treat to spend the day with him, and we learned to cook the best mole, I think, in the world. Gerardo is passionate and curious about many things, and I loved our conversations. I really learned a lot from Gerardo about food, art, local history, and much more.
Thanks so much Gerardo for hosting us with so much love and making us feel at home right away in San Cristobal. We hope to be back soon. Love, Timna and Eric

Awesome Place - Edit
My partner and I went here a few times whilst visiting San Cristobal. The awesome owner and chef is friendly, kind and very accommodating. Value for money is fantastic and the food all delicious! We had vegetable soup, guacamole with tostadas and veggie tortilla with unlimited natural lemonade, all for 120 pesos, roughly £5. The second day we had a lentils and vegetable soup, mole sauce with tortillas stuffed with potato (we have traveled Mexico and this is by far the best mole!) and poblano rellano. Everything is vegan (apart from the locally sourced honey) and locally sourced. It is a small place but means you make friends sitting with other people. The photos of the food don't do it justice. Glad we came here. There are also lots of interesting books. This place is fantastic!
