Surprisingly Disappointing - Edit
My husband and I visited Allen Street Grill just before Thanksgiving and unfortunately our experience fell well below expectations. We are both vegan and ordered the cauliflower steak. What we received was simply steamed cauliflower served in a bowl, which is not a cauliflower steak by any reasonable standard. The dish was disappointing and did not reflect the description on the menu.
Read moreService issues added to the frustration. Our server, Chad, displayed an attitude at several points during the evening. We had made a request in advance noting that we were also celebrating a birthday for a member of our party. This was completely forgotten. My husband also provided a card for the meal ahead of time, yet the staff misplaced the information and asked for it again. These details may seem small, but they matter, especially for guests who value hospitality.
In addition, when the birthday item was finally brought out, it was nothing more than sorbet and it was given to the wrong person… me. This was a total lack of attention to detail and added to the overall disappointment.
We live in Las Vegas, Nevada, where service and warm hospitality are taken seriously. The special requests my husband made were treated as an inconvenience rather than an opportunity to create a positive experience. When my husband addressed these concerns, the response was dismissive and lacked care.
My husband is part of the Penn State alumni and we were looking forward to visiting this restaurant while in town.
Overall, I would rate our experience two and a half stars out of five. We would not return based on this visit.
Improvements could include education regarding what’s well - prepared, well-balanced vegan meal could consist of, listening to the dining customer, educating the staff on proper hospitality.

Hidden Gem for Vegans - Edit
Great location across the street from Penn State. Menu has some vegetarian options but I was hopeful that some could be modified Vegan. Street parking (paid) available. Located upstairs. Nice atmosphere. Friendly service. Large bar and they are big on wine pairings. 1st time here. I started with the sweet potato soup (Vegan as is) and it was absolutely delicious. Moved onto the mushroom hummus (vegan as is). Also absolutely wonderful. The have me 1 dinner roll with olive oil. They have an unpublished vegetarian menu that they shared with me once I shared I was vegan. It has one vegan option. The quino curry bowl. Loaded with veggies, hot, fresh, and tasty. Would come back here again and I hope they add additional vegan options to the menu.
