If one were to glance at the dinner plates of many Wittenberg students, they may find themselves wondering, “Where’s the beef?”

These students are part of the growing vegetarian and vegan movement at Wittenberg. While their presence is prevalent on campus, food choices in keeping with their lifestyles are not, according to most.

Recently, these students have expressed concern with the lack of food options as well as their nutritional well-being.

“There are hardly any vegetarian options,” explained sophomore Daniel Whonsetler. “I get sick of eating the same food over and over again.”

Instead of asking “where’s the beef?” while eating on campus, maybe we should be asking “where are all the fruits, veggies, and meat alternatives?”

Parents of children have the right and should (if they care enough) to ask their children’s school’s for healthier lunch options!

Speaking up can make a difference. I remember one school I worked in had no options for veg meals other than a salad, most days of the week. I spoke up, provoking others to do the same. The cafeteria then sent a poll to all faculty members asking who might enjoy veggie wraps, meatless tacos, pizza bagels w/o the cheese and a few other possibilities. The answers surprised the cooks. From that day forward, standard veg’n options were available for anyone who ordered early in the day.

We have to speak up, or there will be no possibility for change.
