Relaxing homestay closer to local life

The property is on a river bank and has a fantastic garden and patio area full of trees and plants. It is a small village with not much traffic, so the air is very refreshing unlike on the scooter packed streets downtown. You can lie on a hammock on the deck or in bed with the mosquito net and relax to the wind in the bamboo trees or the sound of rain. I really liked falling asleep to sounds of rain and all sorts of animals at night. The patio is also a nice place to work or chill. They have natural insect spray with cinnamon scent that actually worked very well.

The host, Mina, prepared village food for lunch, all vegan, although we noticed a pile of eggshells in the kitchen. We explicitly explained that we are vegan and do not eat dairy and eggs as the word ‘vegan’ is not widely understood in Vietnam and often used with vegetarian without clear distinction. There was a dish with tofu skin rolled with nori which was incredibly good. We also had what looked like chicken drumsticks with lemongrass as bones, which were exceptional.

We always had coffee for breakfast as it was very tasty. I tried bread with tofu, pyramid dumplings and brown rice dumplings for breakfast. All three were good, but my favorite was the brown rice dumplings because of the thick chewy dough.

The property was also used by students to study or practice local instruments, making it feel very close to local life. Mina also offers laundry service for a price much lower than most laundry facilities in town. I had thick jeans that don’t dry very easily, so I asked for laundry service on a sunny day. The laundry was done perfectly and dried very well. There are bicycles that can be used and an electric scooter Mina rents out for a fee. The taxi service Mina called for us was more affordable than Grab.

Overall, the stay was excellent and relaxing. It was a bit away from the main tourist area, but it was much more relaxing and surrounded by nature and fresh air. Mina and her family were great hosts and made sure we were comfortable.

Paradise in Hoi An

Me and my partner were so happy to have found this place and stayed for a whole week! The place is pretty much 99% vegan, but because veganism in Vietnam isn’t always understood as it is in the Western world, make sure to double check sometimes. We were offered a cooking class near the homestay but upon asking it turned out not to be vegan. There are also eggs in the kitchen (although they don’t seem to be used for the hotel/guests).

The rooms are extremely cute, we stayed in our own little hut on the property, it was super comfortable and romantic. Very clean and has everything you need.

Everyone who works here is very friendly, Mina is a very lovely host telling some stories about the region and country. Her daughter Elisa would brighten up the mornings speaking English with all the guests and hanging out to play. The other people (Mina’s husband and the ladies who clean) are also super friendly.

The place is secluded and quiet but at the same time there is also a small school so there will be kids around, either studying, playing or playing music. The overall atmosphere is super super nice.

The food was super delicious and always home made by Mina. My favourite was the morning coffees, slightly sweet but so delicious. For breakfast there is a list of items and you can tell the night before what you would like. I had the Bahn mi every morning, my husband also tried all the other dishes (dumplings). The also serve tea and juice. You can also order lunch, which you would have to do a bit in advance (we usually asked the night before). Lunch doesnt have a menu, you just get served what they have, but it’s always very delicious! As the place is small, you can just take lunch and breakfast whenever you want.

I had the most pleasant stay at Yên homestay and was sad to leave. It’s really a safe and quiet haven in the busy Hoi An. It’s a bit far from the city centre, but the are bicycles you can use for free and you can rent one of their scooters. Otherwise you can walk (25 mins) or they can arrange a taxi, or you can get grab. When we got a taxi arranged from the homestay it was actually cheaper than Grab.

I’d recommend anyone to stay here! Just make sure you mention that you don’t eat eggs/dairy to be safe, but the food is generally vegan. It’s just an extra precaution because vegetarianism and veganism is used interchangeably in Vietnam sometimes. But don’t let that stop you, this is the most amazing place to stay at.
