Off With Their Bread - Edit
After marvelling at Windsor Castle’s imposing battlements from afar, I found myself in search of something a little more attainable. Much as I appreciate a slice of royal history, I can’t think of much behind those walls that would tempt me to part with the admission fee - save, perhaps, for the promise of a truly exceptional buffet. Instead, I sought a banquet fit for a monarch without having to pay a king’s ransom, and this bakery appeared to fit the bill rather nicely.
Read moreOne aspect of the menu struck me as particularly peculiar. The sweet offerings catered surprisingly well for plant-based diners, and an impressive number of the breads were also suitable. Yet, aside from the vegan roll, there was scarcely a savoury option to be found. More baffling still was the staff’s apparent reluctance to make a custom sandwich - a service they openly advertise. My suggestion of something as straightforward as a salad baguette was met with all the enthusiasm of moody teenager.
Nevertheless, I was satisfied that I’d assembled enough provisions for a respectable picnic, so I retreated from the crowds, perched myself atop a nearby wall, and prepared to feast with considerably better views than company.
The vegan roll proved mightily impressive. In fact, the texture and flavour were so convincing that I briefly questioned whether I’d accidentally been handed the heathen pork version instead. Rich, savoury and thoroughly satisfying, it was enough to justify the trip on its own.
The yum yum was another triumph. Wonderfully light, sweet and gloriously sticky, it had me salivating at the prospect of what the remaining pastries might have in store.
Unfortunately, they never quite lived up to that promise. The doughnuts ranged from passable to mildly disappointing, all suffering from a touch too much dryness. The jam-filled version was oddly the most afflicted, while the iced doughnut emerged as the best of an otherwise fairly mediocre bunch.
Not quite the feast I’d been hoping for, then, but there was certainly enough quality on display to tempt me back should I ever find myself wandering these streets once more.
