cozy place with delicious food - Edit

A cozy and quiet place in the middle of the noisy Piccadilly Circus - we had pumpkin soup, a delicious vegan hotdog and a spinach crepe with yummy crispy kale chips :)
Inexpensive, very friendly staff.

Pros: inexpensive, friendly staff, delicious vegan food

A little gem, most of the time! - Edit

I have been here many many times, the full cooked breakfasts is just amazing, the rolls, toasted sandwiches and desserts are also gorgeous. The staff are really sweet.
But there is a but... sometimes the menu isn't as good as other times and sometimes it smells --could be old soho plumbing? It is also a little small. Overall though, would definitely recommend a visit.

Pros: The taste of the food, Hot vegan options!, Lovely staff

Cons: Odd smell on occasions!

nice, friendly cafe - Edit

I have only been here twice and I had the hotdog. Food came out quickly and it was delicious. I love that they use animal figures as table numbers.

There isn't much seating but I had no problems when I was there. I will hopefully come back and try the rest of the menu soon.

Staff were friendly,

Pros: nice location, dog friendly

Cons: quite small

Wouldn't return unfortunately - Edit

I'm sure the vegan hippo has other items on the menu that are good but based on what I ordered we would not return again. I've had vegan burgers at other restaurants that have been very tasty but my burger here was dry, cold and had a bad taste and texture to it. Better off going to Pret A Manger!

I also think they were a little understaffed as it took 40 minutes to receive our food which for a burger is just too long a wait - especially as I didn't like it and couldn't eat the patty!

We did order a chocolate cake which tasted good and the chips were nice - just ask for extra tomato sauce.

Pros: chocolate cake

Cons: cold food, 40 minute wait for food, burger did not taste good

weird, overpriced and slightly disappointing - Edit

When I walked in a couple of customers were still waiting, their orders and been confused. After waiting a few minutes I was ready to order when the guy behind the till stepped back and started eating an avocado I think he was starting his break it was just odd that he didn't say hello or wait for someone to come take over.

I found the food quality pretty poor for the price. The hot dog was fine but the chips were pretty bad.

I don't want to rule this place out it was just an odd experience as the employees were running around a little confused and frankly a bit annoying while trying to enjoy my meal. Maybe I caught them in a bad day (it was really quiet in there).

Dissappointing - Edit

Coming in here the first thing you notice of a strong
odor of fried food. If you look at the things they sell you will notice that it is mainly fast food (mainly frozen food).
We had a raw avocado cake that was delicious but every piece was packed in a plastic box of which we do not know if they reuse it.
We find it a bit hypocritical that they do not accept the new five pound notes but support Alpro by using their soy products.
Please only visit this place with old clothes that you plan to wash soon as every part of you will stink like you work in a chippy though spending only a few minutes there.
Do not go there if you can not bare a lot of hipsters and an loud atmosphere.

Pros: good cake

Cons: stinky, loud, hypocritical

Delicious and fresh food for a good price - Edit

Had the loveliest lunch here! Food was fabulous, location was easy to find and great if you are in Leicester Square. Cute, cute, cute cafe! Workers were helpful and friendly too.

Brilliant - Edit

I love this place. It's not fancy but it's not trying to be. Prices are really reasonable and the jackfruit is incredible. The desserts are really good and they have a really strong vegan ethos. All meals are also available to takeaway

Pros: Great Food, Good atmosphere, Reasonably priced

Cons: Could use more space between tables

Soooooo good! - Edit

This is now one of my favourite places in London. All vegan, reasonably priced and great decor promoting animal rights. We also enjoyed browsing the vegan recipes and animal themed books while we waited. My partner and I ordered the big breakfast with bacon to share. It was great and a nice big serving. You get 2 slices of toast with a really delicious vegan butter. The tempeh bacon was awesome as was the scrambled tofu. We also got a almond milk hot chocolate which was divine. I got a chai latte with soy milk which was good although they just used a chai tea bag and I would a chai powder (David Rio makes a vegan one), syrup or just fresh tea and spices. Great service. We wanted to try the croissants but they weren't going to be ready until after 12 so we want to come back to try them.

Pros: All vegan, animal rights themed, good prices. Open

Cons: None

Fun Funky Vegan Place in London - Edit

I had an early dinner here and while there are limited options, the burger and kale chips were tasty. I splurged and got a cookie to go for dessert. Not the healthiest food but a fun treat. It's in a funky part of Soho and the interior is definitely casual. The prices are good and the staff is friendly

Pros: Basic tasty vegan food, Funky decor , reasonable prices

Cons: very funky environment-not bad but just a heads up, not the healthies vegan food but still tasty

AMAZING!! - Edit

I went back to Vegan Hippo after not being there since mid-2016 and WOW was I blown away by the food! The jackfruit sandwich was the best one I've ever had and everything was absolutely delicious. They even had some really original drinks I've never seen before. And vegan croissants -- first time I've ever seen these anywhere! Highly highly recommend this place. I also love the ambience, including the decorations and lots of wonderful vegan books to read while you are there.

Pros: AMAZING FOOD!!!, Very reasonable prices, Lots of choices

Lovely place but lots of room for improvements - Edit

Myself and a friend popped into Vegan Hippo yesterday and found the experience slightly more stressful than expected, great selection of food but seemed like staff were quite stressed and confused, food was late and lots of orders were being forgotten. Also the animals for the table are a great idea but not very practical and there was a slight lack in communication. That being said we really enjoyed our food! (Jackfruit burger & a hotdog)

Pros: Lovely layout, Good food for lunch

Cons: Confusion and service speed

Good place - Edit

This is not the best restaurant I have eaten, my burger was good but my friend's wrap was really average. We found the prices to be a bit high for what it was.
Conclusion : good but a bit pricey for quantity.

Great breakfast! - Edit

I adore this place. The decor is so cute, and I loved it to death. It is all centered around cute animals, and even some funny, clever paintings. The full english breakfast is massive, and was very good. I actually ordered tempeh bacon, despite not liking tempeh (IDK why...), and it was incredible! The staff was great as well. Highly recommend this place for breakfast.

Pros: Central location , Inexpensive, Nice decor

Tasty snacks, great location - Edit

We got excellent (friendly and fast) service in this quirky cafe that should be easy to reach from any part of London. My jackfruit burger was delicious and came with home-made kale chips (i.e. kale crisped in the oven or a dehydrator).

As a greedy old vegan, I found my dinner a little small - maybe I should have ordered a salad as well - but it didn't matter because we went round to Yorica afterwards (Vegan Hippo does have some desserts but there were people waiting for tables so we thought we'd move on).

As a side note, I found it interesting that the management has decided not to accept the new non-vegan fivers but is OK with giving them out in change. A more effective protest might be to take them to a bank and swap them for something else?

Anyway, great place and we hope to come again.

love the jack fruit burger! - Edit

I usually come here once a week to get myself and colleague lunch. We have both had the jackfruit burger which is really tasty and I have had the other burgers and hot dog which were both great! I have only given 5 stars as I am not keen the kale chips, sorry would prefer frys. But the burgers are really tasty and love the coleslaw!

Pros: burgers

Cons: not keen on the kale chips, please do frys😊

excellent little cafe - Edit

Although the menu isn't the largest in variety the food is excellent quality and priced like a Northern Yorkshire mining town not central London!!! Love it love it love it. Will be back again tomorrow for breakfast!

Pros: cheap, tasty, personal

Cons: small menu, small seating area

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Cheap and cheerful hearty vegan food - Edit

I've been here twice now as the location is so centrally located (right in the heart of soho) and the food is hearty and very cheaply priced for London. Great when you need to grab a quick bite in town. They also allow dogs in the restaurant which is always helpful.

They do a nice full english with tofu scramble which is very filling but I think could be improved if they used a nicer quality of bread. I had some kind of seitan wrap or tofu wrap and kale chips the last time which were both great. It's like a healthier vegan greasy spoon cafe. Nice atmosphere, plenty of seating and the staff are super friendly.

Pros: Filling, Cheap, Amazing location

Cons: Food isn't the best but good for the price

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Mediocre - Edit

Very busy, and small space. We had the jackfruit burger and the pumpkin burger. The jackfruit burger was my first one, and it was okay. It was too soft, and after one bite half my burger was outside of the bun. Jackfruit burgers might usually be too sweet, but I would call this more of a sloppy joe style burger, where most of the contents end up on the plate. Although it came with kale chips, the price was too high for what we got. Pumpkin burger was decent but nothing memorable, and didn't come with a side.

Delightful centrally located vegan cafe - Edit

The reviews I've read on this site for veggie cafes & restaurants have usually been pretty accurate, and they've helped me so much to maintain a healthy and varied diet when I'm touring in different cities. Because I travel a lot for work, I rely a lot on the threads posted on sites like this by fellow vegans, so as I've got the evening free now I thought that I would contribute my own review for the benefit of other vegans living in London or travelling through.

First of all I was so lucky to find this amazing and unique little cafe. After getting carried away on my day off and spending hours in the British museum just down the road, I was totally starving and wandering around for ages trying to find some decent and reasonably priced food. You'd think that wouldn't be too difficult in a city the size of London, but I wasn't gonna pay £7 for a slice of soggy pizza or a dodgy looking falafel from one of the dives around Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus.

Thankfully, as I was just about to pick up a sandwich and head back to my hostel I came across some 10% off flyers for the vegan Hippo. The cafe was quite busy inside (which is always a good sign) but fortunately the crowd dispersed shortly after I arrived.

I was really happy with the pumpkin burger and fresh carrot juice that I had. I was in this place for about an hour and a half and I could've stayed longer because I kept being charmed by the animal figures dotted everywhere. The interior is reminiscent of a farmyard, which works really well. Other aspects inside were thoroughly delightful too, with beautiful wooden features and bright colours that matched the personalities of the staff (they were all wearing orange).

If you're a veggie living in London and haven't visited this cafe yet then I suggest you give it a try. Hopefully a few more good reviews might help them to compete with some of the other less cosy places nearby

Joseph

Pros: 10% discount flyers

Cons: Should stay open later

Great Vegan Spot in London - Edit

I was so happy to find a vegan restaurant in London that was in walking distance to my hotel. The place is very cute and in a great location! The only suggestion I have is to expand the breakfast menu. But the food and vegan hot chocolate was perfect!

Nice breakfast place - Edit

I'm referring to the breakfast only because I visited just once, in the morning, and so had breakfast there...

Their full English breakfast was okay, but the tofu scramble was overly salty in one of our dishes (although not in the other), and it would have been nice to have some jam with the toast.

The atmosphere was cozy and I liked the fact that they have a good selection of animal-related books on the window seat. Could be nice browsing material for people visiting on their own.

Pros: cozy ambiance, friendly staff

Visit to see for yourself - Edit

Very interesting decor and simple but filling food. I had a pumpkin burger and it was simple but nice. Hotdogs could be better. The coffee cup was large. The place itself is quite small with some outdoor seating. Food arrived really quickly. Staff seem to work incredibly hard, the whole place is like a vegan haven.

Pros: Ethos, Decor, Large hot drinks

Cons: Could seem cleaner/fresher, No fries!

Quick Service - Edit

I ate at Vegan Hippo this week and was expecting a long wait for food after reading some of the reviews on Happy Cow. The food came to my table within a couple of minutes of ordering, even though it was lunchtime and already very busy. The jackfruit burger was quite tasty, although I was surprised to find it served in a fairly tough white bap - wouldn't wholemeal be a bit more fitting? Accompanying kale crisps were very nice. The overall value for money wasn't great, but this is central London, ain't it?

Updated from previous review on 2016-10-29

Pros: Tasty food, Prompt service, Nice staff

Cons: Burger served in white bap - eh?, Other customers were loafing around

terrible - Edit

tried to eat there now on two occasions, both times there was no seats available, the place was full, but not of people earing and drinking, no, it was full of hipsters using the free WiFi. the place is obviously too cool to eat in.

Cons: if you can't sit inside and eat it shouldn&#39

Most adorable little cafe - Edit

Had the Gyros Wrap which was delicious! Serving was a bit small for how much I paid for it. But the size of the hot chocolate I received made up for it!

Pros: Taste

Cons: Serving size

Not cheap but hey, it's London. I really liked the jackfruit burger, tasted fresh and original. Nicely decorated inside so has a good atmosphere.

Pros: good food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff

Cons: bit pricey

Do not miss this wonderful vegan restaurant! - Edit

This is a wonderful place! The food is amazing, the staff is lovely, and the ethical undergirding of the restaurant is exactly what vegans are looking for. Read their website and you will know the way in which this restaurant honors animals. My husband and I who have been vegans since 1991 and 1990 respectively, went to this totally vegan restaurant three times in a five day period. Twice for breakfast and once to take out food for our plane ride back from holiday in London. It was so great to have a traditional English breakfast that was completely vegan and it was such a huge meal. My spouse had the jackfruit burger, which was delicious. He also had the gyro and the hot dog. I had the wonderful carrot cake which was so delicious. In addition, take out all salami and cheese and ham and cheese sandwiches were terrific. If you are traveling to London or you live there, do visit this place. It is not to be missed. It is also reasonably priced.

Pros: Delicious , Big Portions, Friendly staff

Disappointing - Edit

Okay to Vegan Hippo gets points just for being vegan, but I couldn't find much to recommend it aside from that. As a shop, it's fine for picking up the few things that it has (Violife, cakes, sweet treats, ice cream). The food from the cafe is lacklustre to say the least. We got the tofu scramble (bland mess and looked disgusting) and the gyro (soya pieces okay, but the the wrap was dried out, it was just all a bit sad looking). I must say the kale that came with the gyro was the star of the show. Absolutely delicious.

It's a shame. I took my meat eating mum and it's a shame to get such disappointing food because it makes it harder to convince people that bring vegan is awesome!

Yum - Edit

Only had one dish from there, cabbage dumplings, and wow they are delicious, and slaw that comes with it is amazing. A bit pricy for a weekday workday lunch, but I get it to take away when I crave comfort food in the office. Best to
phone ahead to check, as it takes a while to prepare and they often don't have the dumplings available for some reason. Interior is more shabby than it is chic, so I wouldn't eat in. Great to have a fully vegan eaterie in Soho though.

Packed, very Vegan - Edit

This small place is "very vegan": Orders are recognized by numbered figures of animals, the window board (doubling as sitting space) carries a small vegan library, and half the guests are wearing clothes with slogans pro vegan / animal rights.
Haven't tried the burger or gyros wrap, rest of food (hot dog, sandwiches) is based on meat replacement products from the shelf but still OK, and definetely vegan - and low-priced.

Pros: As vegan as possible, Mostly openly pro-vegan guests, Low prices

Cons: "Meats" from shelf (haven't tried housemades)

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

not something special - Edit

The cappuccino was bad, without foam at all.
The breakfast was nice, not more. The prices are too expensive for the quality.
I won't come again

Pros: just vegan

Cons: all the others

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Friendly staff, bad food - Edit

I had the English Breakfast which consisted of a lot of beans, very odd and mushy tofu (I've had a lot of tofu scrambles, I found this one uneatable), a bland under cooked sausage with minimal mushrooms/tomato (a couple slices). The toast and beans were the only parts of the dish that met expectations.

While I was there I saw other menu items come out that looked equally uninspiring. One customer complained his hot dog wasn't hot.

The space is very small, seating is super tight, hence being able to get a good look at other orders. The person taking orders behind the counter was friendly but had a hard time understanding and speaking english. Their whole process was very unorganized and looking behind the counter at sloppy food storage and a make shift kitchen should have prompted me to go elsewhere.
Lesson learned.

Pros: Friendly staff

Cons: Bad food, Small space, Unorganized

huge wait, average food - Edit

We struggled to find a seat but eventually managed to share a table with some other customers. We were told the wait for our breakfasts would be 10 minutes but they took 40 minutes. Other customers had waited even longer and many people were asking where their food was. When they came one of them was missing the bacon so we had to ask for it, and one lot of toast was delayed. However they gave us free chocolate coated dates to apologise for the wait.

Food was okay. There was an emphasis on fake meat rather than nice vegetables. My mushroom portion equated to less than a single mushroom, and there was very little tomato. The majority was a big pile of strange scrambled "eggs". It was all quite salty and generally not great. We had paid £2 extra each for the bacon but it wasn't worth it. Overall it was quite expensive for what it was.

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Adorable. - Edit

There isn't a huge amount of choice but the few options that are availale do not disappoint. The Jackfruit burger was delicious. The salads, sandwiches and cakes are also nice although I have found that sandwiches without meat subs in (like plain cheese) can be a little bland. The English Breakfast portions are very big. Mum and I couldn't finish our plates and there was no convenient way to take away beans and scrambled tofu so we had to leave it. I'd say share a portion between two or ask for half a portion unless you enjoy big meals. Other hot food portions seem to be a good size though and the place seems to have a very cozy, wholesome cafe type feel.

Decent food - Edit

Small café with small menu, some snacks and drinks. When I was there there were two people working there who were completely overwhelmed by the among of customers. Food was decent, but not that great.

The area where this café is located is not that bad, but when I was there they were a bunch of alcoholics and junkies running around yelling in the street, and some totally spaced out individuals crashed on the outside seating of Vegan Hippo.

Overall it seems like a nice enough place, I guess I just didn't visit at the best ot times.

Pros: Very friendly service, Obviously animal friendly

Cons: See review

Vegan Heaven In Soho - Edit

I've been coming here since last summer, when the The Vegan Hippo opened & I've watched it grow from strength to strength and the menu develop and expand. It is one of my favourite vegan spots in Soho!
The food is delicious. I've tried a few other places in London that serve jackfruit burgers, but their's is by far the best I've tried yet. As a French fries lover, I was worried that the kale chips would not be filling enough for me, however they are the perfect accompaniment to the burger. You can pay a small amount extra an add a slice of vegan cheese! Do it! :) The Polish Pierogi and the hot dog is great too.
In addition, they also serve a large selection of take away salads and sandwiches.
Many vegan restaurants have different motivations when starting business, and especially lately with the rise of veganism. In the main stream market, the motivation  can be monetary only. However, the owner and manager at The Vegan Hippo is a passionate animal lover & this shines through in the decor and atmosphere at the restaurant
The restaurant is excellently located & very easy to find. I usually take the tube to Piccadilly Circus, then head out of exit one. It's about a 4 minute walk from there, or it's just as easy to get to from Oxford Circus.
Check it out!

Pros: Superb location, 100% vegan menu, convenient opening times

Cons: serving vegan alcohol would be good.

great place for a satisfying full vegan menu! - Edit

Staff are really lovely, not a lot of seating so be prepared to have to wait. The food is quite good but quality could be improved, hopefully they will get there as time goes on as clearly a lot of passion has been put into it! All food good but not great. Nice to have the option there though

sympathetic, but not (yet) good enough - Edit

vegan hippo is one of those places which looks cute, the people are very nice, the menu is appealing, it's very sympathetic, and you just wish the food was a bit better. it was fine, but really nothing more. also the staff seemed to be struggling even though there were not many customers (they kept mixing up the orders and the table numbers). the full english was a bit bland, the scrambled tofu was a bit soggy, and the rest didn't impress much more. it was not extremely bad, but definitely not very good either. and that's really a shame, because the idea is there. it seems like they could really do with some more experience, both in the kitchen and in the restaurant, maybe in some years time it will be much better and we'll be back!

Pros: everything vegan, nice atmosphere and staff

Cons: not great food, staff stuggling

YUM! - Edit

I loved the Jackfruit burger and my husband liked the Gyro a lot! It's in a cozy little nook and you take a toy animal with a number on it to your table which was cute! Really wanted to go back and try the blueberry perogies but was only in the area one day

Jackfruit burger - Edit

I had my first jackfruit burger at Vegan Hippo. I had heard a lot about jackfruit on social media and my first experience of it was not very impressive. The burger was shreds of jackfruit cooked in a barbeque kind of sauce. Very strong flavour. I found the texture difficult to swallow - not very enjoyable. It was served with kale chips. I hate kale chips and should have asked for a substitution. I don't know why vegan restaurants assume that if you're vegan you like kale chips. They were dry and chewy and I had to spit out the kale stems. I threw them away (sorry, what a waste!) In the restaurant's favour, I have heard that their chocolate cheesecake is awesome. Didn't find that out until after I had left the restaurant.

Pros: I like the decor.. nice art on the walls, Convenient location, Staff was friendly

didn't finish my plate - Edit

I ordered the full vegan English breakfast and the carrot cake for desert. Wasn't good at all. Me and my husband couldn't finish our meal at all. Don't recommend. It's a small place with a hippie vibe. Bare that in mind before coming.

Unique food but limited selection - Edit

I got their fresh mushroom and sauerkraut pierogies, which were good (even by a Russian's standard) the chocolate pie was also amazing and the service was quick and the staff was friendly. However there were only about 5 hot options for lunch or dinner, the rest were sandwiches and salad type things. I liked the interior and they had a nice selection of veggie books to look at. The food was moderately priced. So I'd say go for it if you're nearby but I wouldn't specially make a trip to go.

location - Edit

My friend and I ate here on a Wednesday afternoon. The cafe is in a seedy area, sex shops, prostitutes and druggies (we felt so uncomfortable we decided to change from our outside seat to an inside one) I ordered the all day breakfast with 'bacon' the bacon was the only good part of it, the toast was more like stale bread as it wasn't soft like bread or cooked brown like toast it was like it was bread left out to go hard uncovered for an hour! The scramble was awful, beans lukewarm, mushroom and onions drowned in oil and the sausage had a funny twang. I cook way better vegan food at home! My friend had the jackfruit burger which she liked but it was hard to eat as the bun was not a burger one but rock hard like a crusty roll (the sort you use for a cheese sandwich).

Pros: vegan

Cons: location

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Not enough choice - Edit

I got the jackfruit burger, and I think you need an acquired taste for it. It also came with 'kale chips' which was just dried kale that tasted horrible. Mum got the egg sandwich but it was just mashed chickpeas and although it was nice it definitely didn't taste like egg. We didn't bother getting a dessert because what we had wasn't great. There also isn't much choice, just a couple sandwiches, the burger, and a hot dish I think (the menu was a little confusing)

Pros: Very central, near trafalgar, Vegan paintings on the walls

Worth It - Edit

Can just say the jackfruit burger is pretty good. Also you have to try the deliciously sweet chocolate peanut butter dates.

Pros: tasty, friendly staff, various options

Cons: bit pricey

yum! - Edit

I had the gluten option of the jackfruit burger. I'm always delighted to get a vegan gluten free burger and it was actually very yummy too! And the kale chips were luverly!

Pros: gluten free burger bum option. , staff very nice , reasonably priced (esp. for soho)

Nice friendly vegan cafe - Edit

Range of vegan options including polish dumplings with various fillings (vegan cream cheese was nice!), pulled jackfruit bbq burger, sandwiches, toasted sandwiches. Quite a few raw dessert options but also a scrummy chocolate coconut cheesecake.
Very nicely done funky seating areas inside, books to browse and a couple of tables outside.

Pros: All vegan! , Friendly, Interesting stuff to try

A vegan haven in seedy central Soho - Edit

Well that's a bit of an exaggeration but the Hippo is on the one corner of Rupert St that still boasts some of the Soho lowlife so beloved of films like Mona Lisa and TV series like Minder. And now that Maoz the falafel joint has gone it's a fine thing that Hippo has plugged a gap in central London,s vegan options.
hippo is small and friendly with only a few options on offer as a main meal. They aimto be quick and they were, almost grab and go! I was dissapointed that the Pierogi option had sold out and I hope they develop their Polish vegan identity. Instead I had a jackfruit burger with Kale chips and a ready made fresh juice , all very nice - though as I sat outside - the chips were so light the wind blew some off my plate!
It was entertaining to sit at their tables for 10 mins eating a tasty vegan snack and watch the colourful world of Soho go past, I shall do so again.

Pros: Quick and friendly service, All vegan outlet in central London., Tasty not over expensive food

Cons: Limited options, No sugar free cake

Delicious Vegan Food! - Edit

Very relaxed and comfortable feel in their cosy cafe. Me & my boyfriend had their best selling BBQ pulled jack fruit burger with avocado, peppers, vegan mayo & cheese in a soft proper bun w/ homemade crispy kale crisps - it was honestly perfect! The tastiest vegan comfort food I have eaten so far. Definitely worth a visit with lots of yummy options on their menu to try. I'll definitely be returning to try something else! Great job Vegan Hippo. :-)

Pros: Friendly, helpful staff , Lovely menu, Relaxed feel & atmosphere

Cons: Not much seating - so much potential to expand tho

not bad - Edit

Cute set up, I like the irony that it gives off a barn-vibe, although barns with animals in captivity is usually what we vegans preach against. The staff was nice, but food was just okay. The menu is not very creative. The food wasn't bad, but not super great either. I hope you guys get more creative with the meals!

Loved vegan hippo, I had the gluten free jackfruit burger and it was so delicious! Will definitely be going back, wonder if they do their sandwiches in gluten free too. The chocolate cheese/ganache cake was to. die. for. and the staff were very accommodating and VERY friendly.

Pros: Affordable, Gluten-free, Friendly

Cons: Limited seating, Wobbly Tables, Small Menu

Tastes like home, but better - Edit

We were on holidays in London for one week and we ate here 4 times. Tasty and home made style food. The pierogi tasted like my wife's granma ones, but vegan, so even better!! The sandwitches to take away were also great, the staff really helpful and the place really cozy. It was plenty of books about veganism, animal liberation, recepies,... We enjoyed it very very much.

Pros: Tasty, Cozy, Pierogi!!!!!

Cons: None

Good food, strange area - Edit

Went there with a friend after desperately trying to find somewhere nice and relaxed to have a snack in SoHo.
The staff were really friendly and the food was super tasty (i had the gyros wrap and my friend had a burger, both were excellent) and not too expensive.
However, we were seated at a table that had apparently already belonged to someone else before (which lead to an awkward and stressful situation when they came back).
When we moved to an outdoor table we discovered that their outdoor seating area was in a not so nice side alley... A heroin dealer was going about her business 5 meters from our seats as well as some prostitutes waiting for clients just behind us...this made the whole experience rather unpleasant.

Would go back, but only to sit inside and at a less busy time of day (it was a saturday evening).

Pros: Great food, moderate prices, friendly staff

Cons: outdoor seating in alley

needs improvement - Edit

I'm personally quite reluctant to give 2 stars for a Vegan restaurant therefore I'll explain in detail why I have. I ordered a jackfruit burger, which is personally one of my favourites.. Unfortunately when this came the bun was so HARD literally the knife had a hard time cutting it. It was impossible eat without pulling everything apart.. and it did. Also they used alot of BBQ sauce which overwhelmed the burger. Just tasted of BBQ sauce. They could of quite easily used 80% less, also the very commercial type. However! The fresh juice which really nice, and fairly priced at £4, the staff were also very friendly and offered great service, location is great with a nice hip atmosphere.

low key cafe with nice vegan food - Edit

This place was nice, there weren't very many menu options but there was a bigger range of sandwiches. Small seating area but it wasn't too full while we were there, and there was wifi. We enjoyed our sandwiches but they weren't anything special.

Pros: vegan

Cons: small menu

Where have you been hiding all my life - Edit

I spend quite a lot of time in soho and to my surprised tucked away on the corner of rupert street is one of the most calming full of character vegan cafè. The food is fast but for some reason I felt no rush to leave, free wifi a great range of books and there's 20% off if youre a student. The menu looks great although I was only able to try their gyros salad but I will return soon and let you know how their hot food is !!

Pros: Staff , VEGAN MAYO

Cons: Tables are abit bare

Excelent lunch and coffee - Edit

Fantastic vegan cafe just a short walk from Piccadilly Circus for both indulgent and healthy vegan food. The menu is small, but we tried the two daily meal specials, and they were both excellent. They seem to have some healthier options as well, but we went for the jackfruit sandwich and gyro. The menu seems to change daily, but if recommend both. We also got some nice coffees, too. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, and free wifi make this a great spot!

Pros: yummy food, coffee

Lunchtime - Edit

First visit shop small with seating to the back, received a friendly greeting on arrival. Menu is on blackboards and a bit limiting as they only have a small kitchen, but the Jackfruit burger and kale crisps was very tasty and enjoyed the chocolate cupcakes.
Would eat here again.

Pros: tasty food, friendly staff, rustic charm with its layout

Cons: limited menu

Cool Vegan junk food! - Edit

Very cozy and tasty junk food, the menu is somewhat limited though, only two hot meal options, the rest are pre-prepared salads and other cold sandwiches.

Pros: Awesome junk food , Excellent service, very friendly attitude, They have plenty of books about ethical veganism

Cons: The place is quite small, Very limited menu options

Something for everyone - Edit

I've now been in twice and had two different soups, a beetroot mango salad with lovely soya yogurt dressing, a truly delicious avocado n hummus sandwich and two slices of gorgeous coconut chocolate cheesecake. It seems like they are experimenting with the menu and finding out what works, as I've seen it change a lot, but I was impressed that I could choose healthy stuff while the kid next to me munched on a huge hot dog, ticking junk food boxes too. The burger meal looks like a delicious happy medium - I'll try that next time if I can resist the avocadmuss. The place has buckets of charm - cute decor and crockery and lovely people, and the food is good value. I will definitely keep coming back

Pros: location, staff, value

Cons: small menu

with more effort, could be packed! - Edit

I REALLY want to love this place, have been many times and I'm keen to support vegan restaurants...BUT...the very poor food is the lowest quality vegan food in town. Given the location, this is a huge wasted opportunity! Unfortunately, it also confirms meat-eaters' general misconception that vegan food is poor, which is a shame. Example: serving bland, plain salad with no dressing at all; just vegetables plonked on a plate. Really Hippo? Most people wouldn't even do that at home, let alone in a restaurant! Vegan food should be about making meat-free food delicious! The lack of creativity is staggering and goodness knows how they pay the rent at this location with so few customers! I keep going back hoping they've got the message, but no. Can I politely suggest the hippo team talk up Berwick street to Mojo (on corner of D'Arblay St) to see some AMAZINGLY creative, delicious vegan delights! Or Mildred's (if you can get a table). Or Vanilla Black. Steal their ideas!

Tasty vegan coconut yogurt cheesecake - Edit

They seem to have simplified the menu at this little cafe since I was last there. I didn't get anything savoury this time, but I really enjoyed the vegan coconut yogurt cheesecake!

Not very good - Edit

It's o.k. but I think chips at every "normal" take away shop are better. The food was made in the microwave, definitely not fresh and it wasn't really hot, only a bit warm. My burger falls apart and the burger bread was not good. Best of all have been the cheese and the sweet potatoes.
The price is o.k. for the size, but not for taste. It's not tasty.
The "restaurant"(you can't really call it restaurant) was cold, not only a bit warm.

Pros: friendly waiter, cheap

Cons: cold room

hotdog and sides - Edit

Ordered the hotdog coming with side veggies, a juice and a cake.
The hotdog, although good was near room temperature, the sweet potatoes cold just like the raw non-seasoned veggies....
Nothing special for the juice, at least I know that the ones I do at home are better.
The clear highlight of the meal was the chocolate cake! Creaming and not too sweet! I recommend!

Pros: chocolate cake, friendly staff , location

Cons: side dishes

Great banana loaf! - Edit

Nice and cosy, right in the bustle of soho. The staff were shy but friendly, and the banana loaf was delicious! I'm eager to return and try the vegan hotdog and burger. Prices are good and they have some interesting books available to read :)

Pros: Good prices, Good food, Cosy interior

Cons: Shy staff

Stunning value for Soho! - Edit

Found this place via Happy Cow and nipped in for a quick eat on the way to the pub and was delighted to find such great food in nice casual surroundings and a good meal for under a tenner.
I had the Veggie Hotdog and a juice from the fridge.
All really nice and served quickly by the affable chap in charge.
Couldn't fault anything and will definitely make it a regular.

Pros: Location, Quality of food, Price

Cons: menu a little limited, cafe atmos may be too casual for some

Quaint Little Vegan Hole - Edit

Found this place tucked away in the heart of London, really lovely chilled atmosphere and only a couple of tables.

Food was good, my mum had a hot dog but there was too much mustard on it so it burned her (and my) nose. The menu was more of a guideline as it listed soup - they didn't have any. It listed cakes which they didn't have. However, they did have cakes which were DELICIOUS. So was the food I ordered (the dumplings). The tea comes in massive mugs and was the best tea my mum has ever had. Would definitely go again and would recommend.

Staff were friendly and the toilet was nice.

Pros: Food tasted good, Nice decor, Friendly staff

Cons: Too much mustard!, Menu was misleading

Disappointing - Edit

Upon walking in, it wasn't clear what we were supposed to do. There were menus on the till desk, and we didn't know whether to take them and sit down, or whether to look at them and order, or order food, sit then pay. The food wasn't great. I had a hot dog which came with soggy sweet potato chips which seemed more like butternut squash chunks. And it came with a tasteless salad. My boyfriend had a burger, which consisted of a tiny tasteless mushy burger in a massive bap. The surroundings inside were over the top. Garish paintings preaching veganism, which I imagine puts any non-vegans off being in there, and vegans don't need preaching to. And the place was adjacent to a gay sex shop and a seedy Thai massage parlour. Overall one of the most uncomfortable, unsatisfactory and disappointing places I've ever been to.

Pros: Everything is vegan

Cons: Food was tasteless, confusing about how to order,

the food - Edit

This place is well located and very cosy. The decor is lovely and staff friendly. The food however is terrible, looks unappetising and although tasting okay, it felt like it probably was heated in a microwave. In the end you can find some much nicer places than this for the same price.

Pros: Staff, location and decor

Cons: the food

Very disappointing - Edit

The cafe itself is lovely, staff were nice, but the food is really just something anyone can make at home (and you'd probably make it better too!!). The price is too high for the quality you get. I had a sandwich and a hot dog (both average, nothing special). I was still hungry, so I ordered the crepe with strawberry jam - it was terrible quality and way too much jam.

They have a great opportunity here, they really need to focus on the food. Change the menu, improve the quality.

Pros: Nice atmosphere, Friendly staff

Cons: Food quality

first impression - Edit

So good to see another vegan cafe and in such a good location. So for my first time in my lunch break I thought I would try a take away. Staff were friendly enough but my take out dumplings didn't look very appetising floating in oil and really didn't taste of anything. So disappointing. Cake was good though. Maybe I'll try again with something different but there is so much good vegan food to be had elsewhere for the same money that it would have to be a lot better tasting next time. Maybe eating in is better! Sorry but only 3 stars.

Pros: Good location, cake was good.

Cons: stodgy dumplings

A great find - Edit

Had lunch here today with my sister, delicious avocado sandwich and a subtle Persian curry followed by chocolate covered dates and a chocolate and coconut cheesecake(divine!) Food tasty and well priced. Service a bit slow and we were provided with very odd jam jar type glasses to drink from. Atmosphere good and would definitely eat here again.

Pros: Fresh quality vegan food, Friendly staff, Good value

Cons: Slow service, Need proper glasses to drink from.

So disappointing - Edit

The staff are very nice, and the environment is welcoming, but the food is extremely mediocre. This food is not going to encourage anyone to become vegan. I would have only given it a one cow rating but 2 seems to be the lowest allowed. I really hope they will make an effort to improve the food because it would be wonderful to have a good vegan cafe in that location.

Pros: Nice staff, Good location, Books and magazines

Cons: Awful food

Cheap, cheerful and friendly - Edit

Great new cafe tucked away. The portion sizes are just right for a light lunch, not so big that you can't finish it. The food is good, not amazing, but very nice to fill a hole. The staff were very friendly and the service was super quick. I'll definitely go again!

Pros: Cheap, friendly, fast service

this little restaurant is perfect for vegans. The entire menu is vegan and delicious. we came twice and ate the same because it was so good! staff is really nice as well. also it's not as pricy as other food places in that area

Pros: only vegan stuff menu :), nice staff, cute location with plenty of vegan books :)

What a great find - Edit

Brilliant, very good value especially for central London. Great choice, lovely cakes, very clever use of space. All that plus a Hillside collection box on the counter, you can't ask for more.....

Pros: Food, choice and quality, Location

Cons: None

Fantastic food - Edit

I popped in for lunch today having found the Cafe on the internet, what a great find. The cafe is decorated well and the feeling is fresh and bright. The staff were friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The food when it arrived (it was pretty quick but freshly made) was hot and tasted like something NASA will eat on the way to Mars (because it was seriously out of this world!)
I'm really looking forward to returning to work my way through the menu, I'd highly recommend a visit.

Pros: Fantastic food, Lovely feel about the place, Friendly staff

Cons: BBQ pop up joints outside in street.

Nice desserts - Edit

We had a coffee and great chocolate cake and delicious dates stuffed with peanut butter and covered in chocolate. Very filling! I would definitely recommend smaller portions as we were not able to finish them up. Nice staff, place is very clean, kids friendly and stylish restroom!

It's okay - Edit

Went there today. I hope they will improve on the menu as now it seems quite a junk food. There is a time and place for everything but if you want something healthy, don't expect much. Convenience foods such as sausages, mock meat and cheese, and quite soya based. Another disappointing thing-lots of disposable packaging. If I'm eating in, do I really need a cling film on my sandwitch or dessert in disposable dish (yeah yeah it's compostable but why not the one you can wash?). The great thing is though that they have multiple choice of plant milks for hot drinks! I don't want to be negative but if the menu stays more or less the same, I don't plan to go there just because it's vegan...

Pros: All vegan!, Multiple plant milks, They are making an effort :)

Cons: Junk convenience foods , Disposable cups and other dishes, Plain-not even a mini salad with food

Vegan in Soho - Edit

Nestled amongst the clip-joints on Rupert Street, it'd be easy to miss if you weren't actually searching for it. A small cozy restaurant with interesting decor (lifesize plaster pigs and sheep) and a comprehensive library of just about every vegan book out there. I had a mango salad and a burger, which were both delicious. In fact, the mango salad was just about the best thing I've eaten this year! Everything was freshly made and, for central London, reasonably priced. The place is brand new, so there'll be a few days of bedding in. I'm just about to head back that way, so I already know where my lunch is coming from.

Pros: Heart of town, Delicious food, Plenty to read

I was there on opening day and the food was great! - Edit

I went to Vegan Cafe' the day it opened: as it is normal with new venues, there were the usual teething problems... staff not to sure of what's available, cash only, etc. but you can see it will be a really great place once these small creases have been ironed out.

We had a gyros wrap, smooth, delicious and indulgent, and a greek moussaka, equally filling and delicious. The potatoes on top were to die for. The food was really impressive: tasty, not sparing on flavours, just really nice! Even the salad dressing was good.

Keep in mind this is a cafe': do not expect aragula and pea shoots leaves style of food, but be confident that what they make is beautifully cooked and seasoned!

The space is also very cute, with a feminine slant: the type of place which is ideal for a morning or afternoon break with a friend, with hot chocolate and cake. I think they may soon need to change the layout to allow for more seating space, which at the moment is pretty limited. Demand may be high enough!

Pros: Great food, Nice, cozy space, Appropriate prices: not low, not high

Cons: Not many seats (but comfortable), Teething problems(they will sort it out)

Great vegan burger - Edit

This place is great. I don't know why it doesn't say vegan here, because all the food there is. it's a very cozy small cafe. I had the mexican burguer and it was amazing.

Pros: all vegan options, cozy small place, great food

Cons: money only.
