Vegan tasting menu

Wow. Imagine being Belle while all the castle's furniture delivers course after course of imaginative and delicious plates, except the servers are calm, informative, and... human beings.

The menu specified "vegetarian" tasting menu but I asked if it could be made vegan. They said yes, and hence the stream of incredible micro-meals began.

While the servers explained each dish they set down, all I can tell you is each had a unique texture, flavor profile, and was perfectly timed in sequence with the rest of the meal. Surprisingly, as a person usually uninterested in salad and desert, I was thrilled with both the salad course (which is bundled so you can eat with chopsticks) and the mango coconut cream tapioca masterpiece at the end. The wild array of tomato, avocado, mushroom, and eggplant shashimi, roasted chili hand roll, some sort of hot veggie bowl with crispy rice, thinly sliced mushroom bowl, and pear/fried parsnip "nachos" were beyond words. The words I am using are just to give you a preview of the range of what gets delivered, but fails miserably to describe this food.

We came with Omnis and generally the service knew to set the meat dishes on their side of the table, but occasionally they would place them in the middle and our friends would need to pull the dish to themselves. We only had one moment of needing real clarification; they set down a mushroom "brown butter" sashimi and walked away-- we waited until another server came by to ask if it was vegan. They went to the kitchen, then returned and confirmed, yes, it is. I am glad I asked, because it was phenomenal.

Beyond food, I ordered a rioibos tea which came in a large pot and was perfect temperature to drink upon delivery. My husband and our friend split a bottle of sake, which they brought on ice, and was a perfect accent to the meal (per them, I loved my tea!). Certainly a fancy dinner, the hosts didn't bat an eye at our t-shirts and shorts, despite being surrounded by groups dressed to the 9s. The vegan tasting was $75 per person, whereas the traditional tasting menu was more than double-- $195/person. Vegans, this is a spot to get incredible food, service and not be penalized with an upcharge. Uchi is a perfect spot for fancy celebrations, and puts out their best work for vegans.

Pros: Creative dishes, Soothing upscale ambiance, No fuss to make it vegan

Cons: Others in restaurant being delivered fish, Fish displayed at bar

Fantastic

The sheer number of options here for vegans is outstanding. The vegan tasting menu is exceptional. Drinks are great. Service was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. If you want a finer dining vegan experience in Houston this is the best place I have come across. It isn’t cheap but you’re paying for exceptional food and experience.
Edit - I said one of the nigiri was mushroom in the pic but it was avocado.

Loved the food, but annoying service

I came here for dinner with my omni husband and we both got tasting menus. None of our courses came out together - it felt very unorganized and awkward.. at one point he received 3 plates in a row before I was given something! However the food was great and the vegan dessert was awesome. The waiter told me that the wife of the chef is vegan, so it’s important to them that we have tasty food there - I’ll take it 🙃
