The owner is so kind and the food is reasonably priced for the quality! You get a very big plate with many options. Pork belly is THE option. Get it.
Read moreMy only critique is the pho is not worth the money. It tastes like it was made with a soup base powder. It really pales in comparison to the other pho places in town. Stick to the hot cart and you’ll be very happy.
Overall a Hilo icon. The lore runs deep. I bought my mattress here a few years ago when it was a combo furniture store x vegan restaurant.

Amazing selection of dishes. $5 per dish and they give you a lot. We tried the mei fun, pork belly, sweet and spicy tofu (delightfully crispy), braised fish, coconut milk curry vegetables, fried rice, steamed bun, and tapioca pudding (has fruit in it). Everything was oh so delicious and fresh. Friendly staff, place was very clean, everything was 100% vegan. The food here beats the fancier Thai and Chinese restaurants in town.

The food was fantastic, and suitably convincing for the non-vegans in our party. The “beef” had a little spice and my son still went to town on it, but his favorite was the sweet and sour tofu. Funky, fun space with killer food. Healthy options and fun (less healthy) options were equally wonderful!

Loved our meal. Restaurant is off the beaten path and so grateful to happy cow reviews to lead us here. Sweet ladies told us all the choices. Choose 3 for $15. We couldn’t decide so we got one large plate with some of everything and shared it between the two of us. Delicious spices and options!

Incredible. The pork belly and seaweed tofu are the highlights for me but everything here is fantastic. And so cheap! The guy who runs this place is wonderful. Very knowledgeable and helpful about dietary restrictions like gluten (there are 4 or 5 quite good gf options). Delicious cheap dessert options too.

Wow what a find! Home made seitan and other fake meats. Only $10 for three items from the buffet tray. Spring rolls amazing. Owner is very attentive. Very good food but might be on the salty side. No mattresses in sight. Back room has additional seating and items for sale. Kale salad occasionally available is the best dish.

In total there were like 7-9 different dishes.
We also ordered spring rolls and summer rolls. Both great!
They have indoor seating, but no air con.

Amazing! I come here regularly and the food is consistently great, and the customer service is great too. I was just here yesterday and can wait to go back. My favorite is the Banh Mi. The Pho is a crowd pleaser too!

This place is a gem. We both got a plate that included three different hot foods. We really liked the Singapore noodles and the basil tofu. But overall, everything we got was so good. Prices were reasonable too. I think it was ~$15 for each plate and they FILL those plates. I would definitely recommend The Vegan Shop if you are looking for a place to eat in Hilo.

Just a short 2-minute walk from the famous Hilo Farmers Market, there’s this family-run vegan restaurant. They offer a fully vegan menu—we tried the Vietnamese spring rolls and two different noodle dishes. The owner and their family were very friendly. The location isn’t the nicest, but with food this good, no complaints!

We all ordered from the buffet bar and got 3 items each- everything was amazing. We especially enjoyed their unique tofu creations. The noodle dish was better than the rice IMO. The tofu dishes were quite creative and I highly recommend stopping by especially since it’s $15/plate for 3 items and the serving size is generous. Stopped by recently to find they created vegan fried egg which was delicious. They had some banana dessert in the fridge and the vegan jerky they sell is pretty solid. Overall, their food takes a lot of time and effort to make and is tough to find out here so I highly recommend prioritizing this spot.

Our favorite spot in Hilo - Edit
I love everything about this place. We had the buffet and I chose the fish, the pork belly, and the greens. I wish I could have sampled everything because it all looked good and the items I ordered were amazing. The staff was incredibly friendly and very helpful. Atmosphere was simple and homie. I really wanted to come back and try some other items from the buffet but they were closed on the last two days of our stay. #Veganuary

As someone who is really not a fan of vegan meats for the most part, I was absolutely floored by how good this was. I got the spicy rice, “pork” belly, and the tofu patty. All of them are really good, especially the rice. The lady working was nice enough to give me a little extra of the “beef”, which was also really amazing.
