Not for vegans - Edit
There was only one vegetarian sandwich, and it's with **a real** egg. the guy was super nice, but they had no idea about what veganism is. They prepared for me a "vegan" sandwich, and it was with an omelette. Made me a new one for free after explaining them that vegans don't eat eggs.

Hi Samanta, I'm Thao, founder and owner of The Railway Hanoi. I'm sorry for your experience. It happend 2 months ago, so we can't investigate how that happened to you, but I'm glad our team tried to fix it right away. You're right. We don't know much about veganism as it's a new thing in Vietnam. We're a small family cafe and our food is cooked by our antie from home kitchen with love. When we started having people come to ask for vegertarian/vegan food, she started learning how to make them. Now, our non-meat menu is more variety. And we have customers keep coming back and ask for it. In your case, I think our staff mistake you order Vegertarian in stead of Vegan. We did a training about vegan food. I hope we can see you again someday and offer you a full satisfiled experience with us. Thank you, Choo Choo!

VEGANS BEWARE - Edit
There is no "vegan egg" I do not even suspect the banh mi without the egg is vegan. The owner explainedn to me that their eggs are ethically sourced, however eggs can never be ethical when male chicks die. They have the vegan banh mi with the "vegan egg" option but please do not be fooled like we were. They will feed you actual egg under the pretense that it is vegan. They even offered us cream puffs in the beginning which contained egg and milk which we explained we do not eat. They still served us egg in our banh mi. Its a cute location, the staff are all friendly but it is wrong of them to lie about their vegan options. Its vegetarian friendly, hardly vegan friendly.

Cons: Not safe for vegans, no such thing as ethical eggs

Hi Ben, here again, another lesson, the explaination for "vegan egg", our auntie, our cook, went to a workshop about being vegan in Vietnam when we told her that our customers asked for vegan banh mi. In the workshop, she learnt about " vegan egg" is when it come from a female chicken never had sex with a male chicken in her life. She believe in what she learnt. We might have different education and veganism is a new thing in Vietnam. But we make an effort to learn about it and cook it for tourirsts like you when you visit Hanoi. We never intent to lie about our food to fool you. We offered homemade cream puff with our drink as a complimentary. The puff is free. If you don't eat egg, you don't have to take it. Perhaps, a lesson for us when we take order to justify and a lesson for you when you order in a local place in Vietnam : toi khong an trung = i do not eat egg. Good luck with your non-egg travelling!

Quaint place, okay food. - Edit
We went during the day and the place is very nice with lovely staff who say choo choo as they bring your order (very cute!) but I found the food just okay. The vegan noodle salad was tasty but the banh mi was the worst I’ve had and I’ve had A LOT since coming to Vietnam. The vegan one was just veggies, no tofu or mushrooms or avocado or vegan egg or fun sauces like lots of the others I’ve tried. Not unpleasant but a bit boring. Great place to watch the trains though. Nice atmosphere. Also not as cheap as other places in Hanoi. If you want great Bang Mi go to 25 Bang Mi in old quarter!

Hi Hanna, Thank you for your feedback! We just pass it to our auntie. She is our cook. She cooks food with love from her kitchen. She is not a vegertarian herself, but she always try to learn how to cook nice food for our customers. Thanks for your share about the tofu and avocado. We'll try that. Hopefully next time, you come to hanoi, we can have a great banh mi and view the train together. Our new location is The Railway Hanoi 2 @ 65 Ton That Thiep, Ba Dinh, Hanoi. Enjoy life, Choo Choo !
