A unique and moving experience

I took a friend here for her birthday present and we both had the most phenomenal time. There were vegan options for every course - though no substitutes for the delicious looking amouse bouche! The food was tasty and well presented and the concept is phenomenal. You can tell that these young men are being given a second chance that they really need.

Lunch Behind Bars

There are a couple of ways to get into HMP Brixton. I chose to go for law-abiding option by visiting The Clink for lunch.

On arrival you have to leave pretty much everything (including phone etc.) in a locker before being searched and escorted into the prison. It's a fun bit of theatre that adds to the experience. It's nice to be without your phone, although it means that you can't take pictures.

Once you're inside, you wouldn't know that you are in a prison. It’s an upmarket restaurant - definitely more upmarket than pretty much all of the other happycow restaurants I've reviewed!

We were waited on by Sisay, a serving prisoner, who was polite and personable. He had worked at The Clink for three months and preferred it to other options (working in the garden etc.). We had a chat about the World Cup; he watched it in his cell and there was a lot of noise during the dramatic parts of the game (including penalties).

The food was really nice. It was well presented as per the upmarket look of the restaurant, although portion sizes were a bit on the small size. I had the vegan starter and main:
- fennel, yellow cherry tomato and spring onion tian, orange jelly, star anise syrup
- roast courgette stuffed with black-eyed beans and tofu, bulgur wheat, couscous, heritage tomato salsa

Bear in mind you'll eat with sturdy plastic cutlery and only soft drinks are available.

Overall it was a great experience, and a worthwhile charity.
The prisoners were working hard towards a second chance at life. The booklet on the table gave some statistics, eg. the reoffending rate amongst graduates of The Clink is extremely low. Although it's quite expensive, it's for a great cause so I was happy to pay a bit more than usual.
