Amazing vegan sushi platter – went twice! - Edit
We came back a second time with my girlfriend because it was just so good. The vegan sushi rolls are really creative – not just avocado and fruits everywhere. Cream cheese, red cabbage in a marinade, carrot „salmon“, even cheese varieties you wouldn't normally find in sushi (vegan blue cheese was surprisingly good)
Read moreWe also visited Veganaria (they make the cheese for it) – honestly one of the highlights on Madeira if you want to eat vegan. Their vegan cheese is incredible, nothing like the standard stuff you get elsewhere. Nice to see the Sushimari working with such local producers.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was a bit confusing at first because of the pizzeria next door, but you figure it out.
Would definitely recommend!

Weirdest dining experience - Edit
The sushi restaurant is actually joined to the Italian restaurant next door even though they look separate to begin with. It was a strange arrangement.
Read moreThere was a vegetarian platter but the smallest of these was 22 pieces which was too much to have by myself so I didn't ask if this could be made vegan. So I ordered the vegetarian/vegan nigiri and the vegan maki rolls. Everything else on the menu had a description of what was in the sushi neither of these had anything so I was sure what to expect. The nigiri were 2 avocado and 2 mango and the maki rolls half strawberry and half pineapple. They were ok but personally I found strawberry and pineapple sushi very odd.
The staff were not very friendly and there was a strange atmosphere in the place.

Not recommended - they don't know the difference between vegan and vegetarian - Edit
We ordered the vegetarian 22pc platter and ask several times to make it vegan. It came with cream cheese!

The staff was totally unfriendly and didn't care.

Pros: Nothing
Cons: They sold vegetarian items as vegan, Very expensive, Very unfriendly

Very nice vegan sushi - Edit
We ordered the veggie gyozas and asked to make the vegetarian freestyle menu vegan. The gyozas were really good. The sushi had some flavor combinations that we had never tried before, but they were all very interesting and tasty.

Second visit, still great - Edit
Would give 5 stars if I could. We got the 32 piece vegetarian platter which we asked to be made vegan, as well as the veg tempura and gyozas. Presentation was amazing and sushi delicious. Service was also amazing.

Die Freestyleplatte die ich gegessen hatte war sehr lecker und schön angerichtet. Es war auch mal was neues, das Sushi nicht nur mit Gemüse, sondern auch mit Obst gefüllt war.

Nice - Edit
Nice place and super friendly staff. The vegan options, though not many are labelled. And the freestyle platter is vegan if you ask them to do it vegan.

Good presentation but mediocre food - Edit
It was a little bit awkward, because sushimari is also an Italian restaurant! The sushi was good, but not awesome! For example: we ordered some noodles but they where super oily and we get Tabasco for hot sauce - for asian cuisine a little bit weird. The prices also on the upper end for the value!

Do not go there - Edit
I ordered a "free style" sushi of 22 pieces and specifically asked for vegan sushi with vegetables. Out of 22 pieces 8 were with avocado and the rest with fruits (mango and strawberry). When I told the waiter that this is not what I asked for he check with the "chef" (came back very quickly if I may add...) and stated that this cannot be changed and if I want something else I need to order an additional dish. Tried to explain and talk to them but they were instanced not to compensate or replace the sushi.

Best vegan Sushi in Madeira - Edit
We were two times in that restaurant ordered as a main dish the "freestyle Sushi plate 32 pcs.". The indegredients vary from time to time (freestyle): 1. time sushi fillings had different vegs and fruits - 2. time I didn't like the little unbalanced use of mango but all in all very good and delicious!
Read moreWe also ordered:
- vegan roll
- vegetable gyoza
- miso soup
- some nice japanese teas (extra menu)
Caution: The spring rolls are not vegan (with eggs)! It would be nice, if they'll be vegan in the future 😇! So please ask for vegan food or tell them you are vegan.
The service was good, the athmosphere okay (shares room with an italiano Restaurant and the promenade can be busy especially when there's a soccer match on TV).
Next time in Madeira, we'll definitly come again!

Ausgefallenes Sushi - Edit

Inventive sushi - Edit
The vegetarian sushi platter can be made vegan. It is not indicated on the menu which side dishes and starters are vegan, but the staff can help you with this. The sushi was so different from any sushi I had ever had before and all the different flavours were simply amazing! The only negative was that the desserts were very overpriced and we ended up having to pay the double of what we thought was indicated on the menu. They seemed to work together with the Italian restaurant nextdoor and we were warned by people who ate there that they charge extra for everything (for example: they give you bread you didn't ask for and then charge 5 euros if you touch it). The desserts menu we got at sushimari seemed to be from the Italian restaurant, so be careful with this.
