Waiter mean and not understanding of vegans

Good food and cool vibe, but our waiter was rude and mean.

We went here because our rental host recommended it, among a few other spots that are vegan-friendly (I am vegan, my partner has no restrictions). I noticed that their menu had a key at the bottom that said V=vegetarian, and V=vegan, etc. I saw several V on the menu but no VG. I was sure a restaurant of their caliber could easily adjust things to be vegan, plus our host wouldn’t have recommended it if they couldn’t. I politely asked the waiter if something marked as vegetarian (V) on the menu could be made vegan. Annoyed and in a huff, he said, “It IS vegan. See? There’s a V right here,” and brusquely jabbed at the V in a condescending way like I was a complete imbecile… even though what he was saying was clearly in opposition what their menu stated.

Look, I get it. I work in the service industry too. It’s very hard work for very little pay. Sometimes you’re having a hard day and things annoy you more. Working with the general public sucks; generally people can be obnoxious and ask stupid questions. You’re supposed to be polite and answer them with a smile and a lot of patience that sometimes you don’t have. But in my case, I was politely asking a genuine question based on a menu I had thoroughly and carefully read. Yes, I saw the V. But I also read the menu key that said V is vegetarian, and VG is vegan, indicating that the item I was asking about was not vegan. My question was valid and not a stupid one. Worried that my waiter didn’t know what he was talking about, but afraid to question him any further to receive further ire, I decided to just order the item as is and potentially ingest something that would make me sick later.

We also ordered the focaccia, which had a V next to it. Sure enough, the focaccia has some cheese on top—so definitely not vegan. Not sure if my meal actually was vegan or not.

The wine was great, and my partner and I had wonderful conversation so it was a good time overall. But for that price range, I would expect the staff to know the menu, to understand basic dietary differences, and to be able to answer questions about them to the guests (preferably being polite while doing so). We ended up paying in USD and got Honduran money back, and both because maybe the waiter was just having a horrible day and because it was kind of a headache trying to convert, we just left it all as a fat tip.

But would not recommend vegans go here.

Pros: High quality food

Cons: Not understanding of dietary needs, Mean waiter, Overpriced
