Best DC chain - Edit
I have only lived in DC for about a month, but I have been really enjoying Shouk. The food is amazing, ready quickly, and customizable. They have a good variety and a lot of innovative dishes.

Food is really great — I love the fried shouk’n and when I brought my family there they couldn’t get over how good the pita and hummus is. It’s also pretty affordable and you can refer people for $5 off for an even better deal. I don’t love the vibe inside but don’t really care since the food is great for a quick meal

Oyster mushroom shawarma 🤤 - Edit
Right across from Union Market, lots of seating indoors with a few small tables outside. Delicious food. The way they prepare the oyster mushrooms in the shawarma bowl is delicious. Also recommend their falafel, some of the best I’ve had.

Absolutely delicious - Edit
I had the “shouk’n” pita, it’s oyster mushrooms battered and fried. I haven’t eaten many, but is the best oyster mushroom dish I’ve ever had

Ok - Edit
A vegan restaurant itself is of course nice. However, I think that there is quite a lot of room for improvement.
Read moreYou order at a screen right in front of the cooks and I think that takes atmosphere away. Also, this is not reflected in the price. The shawarma is ok, I like the mushrooms but as previous people said: it’s dry overall. Also, i find it small.
What I don’t like is that Shouk tries to give itself an ecological image by not having a menu in paper. This is bullshit, as they serve their stuff, even for dining in, wrapped in an extensive carton box. A simple plate would do. Take-out is of course even worse.
They have recycling and compost trash, lovely, and no landfill. Since their receipts clearly are landfill, the last point is idiotic. Also, by looking into the cans, it was clear that people didn’t know where to put all the wrapping. Labels would help.

Fresh food & great cookies - Edit
Had the mushroom shawarma and the burger on different days, both were lovely. Good mix of toppings/fillings that make them tasty and unique. The cookies are really good too - soft and chewy in the middle 😍

So the shawarma was really tasty! My friend had the burger and she didn't like it so much, but my husband had the sausage and he enjoyed it. The service was good!

Best Falafel! - Edit
This food was amazing! I had the falafel over grains and salad. The combination of all the vegetables and the dressing was so tasty. I can’t wait to come back and try everything on the menu 😊

Great vibe and customer service - Edit
Loved the vibe of this place. The cooks/servers were very nice and efficient. I would go back again just for that. The food was decent. The mushroom shawarma was very filling and was flavorful if a bit dry. It’s a completely vegan restaurant but not a lot of choices. All-in-all, I’d be more than willing to try their other dishes.

A little dry, but seasoned fries were awesome - Edit
Unfortunately the mushroom shawarma I ordered was a little dry. Based on my experience in Israel, I wasn’t anticipating that. I would order from there again, but would likely order something else. Their seasoned French fries were amazing!

Was in DC and was looking for something new. Never had (or heard of) Isreali vegan food so decided to give it a try. Great experience!! Had the Shouk burger with cauliflower and mushrooms. Excellent! Highly recommend. Will definitely be coming back next time I’m in DC

Too salty - Edit
Slightly disappointed in my first visit to Shouk. $10 for a fast food lunch item seemed too much. The food was not especially great. The falafels were too salty and the spice/flavoring was slightly bitter. Also, the seating was not very comfortable and the place does not serve any alcoholic drinks.

awesome concept, too salty - Edit
I was so excited to find that there was a vegan Israeli restaurant near me. My recent trip to Israel had left me craving their authentic plant based dishes and the menu at Shouk really reflects that authenticity; fresh ingredients, vegetable-centric plates, and Mediterranean flavors. I got the mushroom shawarma and was disappointed with how salty it was. I could taste that they put a lot of effort into the spices and the smokiness of the oyster mushrooms, but I was overwhelmed by the salt. The salad greens were unfortunately drowning in tahini sauce. If I came back, I’d definitely get something different like the Shouk burger I read about in other reviews. The falafel was pretty good and the cardamom cookie was also nice.

Best peta pocket I have ever had - Edit
I got the cauliflower pita pocket and it is the most amazing pita pocket I have ever had. This restaurant is amazing, too bad it is in the slaughterhouse District of Union District. The hours are great though and it is open late when all the other stinky places are closed. The stink from the surrounding buildings still works outside though .

Cons: surrounded by slaughter houses
