Serves meat, vegan options available. Staff know how to adapt some meals to be vegan. Example of choices include: surf bowl vegy style with no yoghurt or the shelter salad without feta. Chef can also make a vegan pasta dish for kids or those who do not fancy the other options - ask. Relocated from 601 Campbell St.

One veganizable option, but great view

At Shelter, the real draw is the location, which offers an excellent view of part of the harbor. Among other wildlife, we saw a sea lion and a number of bald eagles during our visit. The food options are meager but tasty enough: the Tofu Surf Bowl can be made vegan by removing the spicy yoghurt.

Pros: Great location, The one option is decent

Cons: Everything else

No vegan options on the menu

Nothing vegan, mostly just fish. The beer I had was good though and I got way too drunk because I didn't eat! The vibe is nice too. I recommend going for a drink and eating somewhere else.

2023 update: they reopened and now have an excellent vegan falafel bowl I loved.

Delicious and fancy!

Although they have no marked items on the menu, staff is aware and proactively asked if someone is vegan. I had the roasted olives (honey in it) and the Crispy Tofu Bowl and it was absolutely amazing!

Yummy vegan tofu bowl

Super fresh super flavourful veggie tofu bowl. Not many veggie or vegan options but the crispy tofu bowl is quite good.

Pros: Tasty tofu bowl , Cosy atmosphere , Nice cocktails

Cons: Not many vegan or vegetarian options

Overpriced and lack options

The waitress was amazing in trying to come up with options but for a high end fancy restaurant it fell very flat. Ended up eating olives, fries and the surf bowl with no protein. Everything else was already mixed with animal products.

Pros: The food that we got was tasty.

Cons: Lack vegan options, expensive menu

Good food and great service but not super vegan friendly menu.

Asked for the meat to be taken off the surf bowl and replaced with avocado. Was charged full price for bowl $2.75 for 1/2 an avocado.

Pros: Great deck, Good beer selection

Cons: Expensive , Little to no vegan options.

Menu adaptable for veg options

In line with previous review, no labelled vegetarian or vegan options on the menu but the staff provided 3 options of meals that could be adapted (burger, surf turf bowl and some salads). Unfortunately all were adaptable by way of removing the meat or dairy element which is not replaced with anything but I found that they did charge me cheaper for the teriyaki bowl I ordered without the meat ($14 instead of $16). The brussel sprouts entree was super tasty and I did enjoy the teriyaki bowl...although I definitely would have enjoyed it more with a veg option like tofu!

Yum

Nice to have a dinner restaurant that can cater well for vegans in Tofino. They are knowledgeable on adapting dishes and the staff are really friendly to, I was suggested all the possible options with the surf bowl with no meat and yoghurt being the best one, so I ordered that! It was super yummy, basically teriyaki stir fried veg with rice and pickled for cabbage! Filling and satisfying, good meal!

3 stars not 4 as no listed options and even the "secret" options are limited, if they labelled the options on the menu like some other non-vegan places like Tacofino and Calypso in town then stars would raise! Still yum and if went back to Tofino one day would return!
