Sweet shop - Edit
I had been meaning to stop by this cosy grocery store for months, and I'm glad I finally did. (Taichung's public transit system is not the most convenient for getting from point A to point B sometimes.) I was pleasantly surprised by the locally sourced, organic produce even though there was not a huge variety available. I would imagine that the inventory they have is quite seasonal and dependent on the farmers whom they work with. The bananas from Nantou were spectacular.
Read moreI also appreciated their selection of Alechemist beer. This little craft brewery uses Taiwanese ingredients to make some really unique beers, and it's a little bit of a challenge to find their products around town.
Some of the breads they bake between Tuesday and Saturday are vegan. I haven't tried any of them, so I'm not sure what they are or what is in all of them:
• Tuesdays-Saturdays: Flip-flop bread (black olive bread: 拖鞋麵包)
• Tuesdays-Saturdays: Mask bread (black olives and Italian seasonings: 面具麵包)
• Tuesdays & Thursdays: Flying dragon bread (飛龍麵包)
• Wednesdays & Fridays: Buckwheat bread (大祼麥麵包 or 半祼麥)
• Fridays: Buckwheat rose bread (祼麥玫瑰麵包)
• Sometimes (spotted on a Saturday): Bagels (assorted flavors like original, black tea, and pumpkin: 貝果)
I'd heard of Green Vines and its spectacular hair and body care products, but I hadn't seen them outside of their website. When I run out of stuff, I'll come back here to try out this local brand.
There were two employees in the store: one near the entrance and another at the cash register. The guy near the front was introducing various products to customers, including a powdered form of amla (Indian gooseberry) made from trees grown right here in Taiwan. How cool is that? He also gave me some amla candy made from the same stock.
I plan to return in a few Saturdays to buy some freshly ground peanut butter by the gram in my own glass container.
Pros: locally sourced produce and products, freshly ground peanut butter, friendly staff
Cons: very few vegan breads
