The only vegan place in Aguas Calientes - Edit
Unique vegan place in Aguas Calientes. HC says it is permanently closed but IT IS NOT TRUE! The place is opened, the menu is very extensive, Indian and Peruvian dishes available, everything is fresh and natural. The only non vegan ingredient is cheese which can be replaced by whatever you like. We loved it.

Expensive and small portions - Edit
The place was empty, which we thought nice and peaceful. The servings were quite small for the expensive price and they 'forgot' to bring some of the items we ordered. To cap it, they then slapped a 15% service charge on the meal. We didn't go back!

A REAL TRAP FOR TOURISTS!!! - Edit
They made me pay 7 soles extra without my authorization after the expensive 70 soles food, and with a "smile" they said that it was for the waiters tips. My contact with the waiter was too short. I went just once and I didn't come back again. I felt really lied and desapointed. Not all vegans can pay 35 soles plus 7 soles SURPRISE tip for each meal. A regular menu in Peru is 8 soles!!!!. After it I went to the Mercado de Abastos and for 6 soles I got a good VEGAN dish of french fries, rice, salad and avocado. It should not be expensive being vegan!!!
Read moreIt is one of the very few veg restaurants where sadly I will put a low rate. I am really sorry, since this is the only veg restaurant in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu pueblo).

Decent food - Edit
I was the only customer there. The restaurant looks like a cheap place but the prices are quite high. The staff was very friendly though not much English spoken. I paid 35 Soles for my quinoa dish. The taste and portion size was good but nothing extraordinary.
Read moreI didn't have to pay anything extra! My food was 35 soles and the big ginger tea 10 soles so the bill was 45 Soles.

Overpriced - Edit
Overpriced with extra service charge. It was good food, but certainly not worth the amount that was charged. Two stars because they did accomodate some specific food requirements one person in our group had.

Good food at reasonable price - Edit
There aren’t very many veg. friendly restaurants here, but Govinda is a good option. It’s all vegetarian with many vegan options. We began with nachos- basically guacamole and great house-made tortilla chips. Then, I had the causa, a traditional Peruvian dish consisting of stuffed mashed potatoes. In this version, the stuffing was avocado, tomato and broccoli. The presentation was beautiful, with olives and edible flowers and a lovely light sauce.

Expensive - Edit
I had been hoping, as this was the only vegan / vegetarian restaurant I found in Machu Picchu, that the food would be up to my expectations. I was greeted very warmly by the owners and the one waitress and I decided to choose the Peruvian food. My dish consisted of fried banana, fried Seitan, fried tofu, rice and a salad. I have to say I was disappointed when my pineapple juice came as it was very watered-down. The tofu, a very thin slice didn’t really taste great and the Seitan was incredibly tough unfortunately. Rice was bland and quite al dente as well. For 40 sols I felt it was overpriced. As well at the end of my meal I was charged an extra five sol for the service which wasn’t indicated anywhere on the menu and I spoke to the owner on the side and told him I thought this was not correct, we should be informed of any extra charges. I felt like they were really trying hard and their philosophy was in the right place but they need to make some improvements and bring the prices down I believe.

Disappointed - Edit
Good variety, but very expensive. Drinks are not listed on menu and when I saw my check with a single small lemonade costing 10 soles I couldn’t help, but laugh at how ridiculous and sneaky that was. Lentil burger was alright nothing special. Lots of soy for warning Incase you avoid soy like me

Cheap food, they understand vegan, great options - Edit
The lady serving us spoke English and understood vegan food. They can substitute cheese for tofu, it looks like all food is made on demand.

Sabroso y abundante.

Food was filling but not overly flavoured - Edit
The waiter was lovely and we had a seat over looking the street. There are games to play on the tables. Food was good and arrived quickly. Wasn’t as flavoured as I would like but was good enough. It is pretty expensive however! 90 soles for 2 meals and a shared 2l bottle of water.

Good but sneaky - Edit
We had 2 triple sandwiches for 20 soles each. The sandwiches where very good but had olives which wasn't listed and we didn't want. Eventually when paying, the owner came with a bill off 55 soles which included 5 soles tax. We said we as tourists don't pay need to pay taxes and the price was 40 total. Eventually he said ok ok so no tip for him.

Good food but at a hefty price - Edit
I ordered the curry rice and it was tasty. The service was not as slow as other reviews state, however I will agree that the food could have been more flavorful. The owners were very sweet when I asked for ice for my hurt ankle. They then came and made sure that I was okay. Great people!

Not Worth It. - Edit
The owner said the cheese added to our guacamole would be soy based. They added grated Brazil nut on top after I had specifically stated that I had a nut allergy and that I would be accommodated.
Read moreAlso, as per Happy Cow, Govinda stated that it accepted credit cards. Unfortunately, that was not the case when my boyfriend and I tried to pay for our meals. The owner declined credit card payment due to costly surcharges and stated that he was a “new employee.” Not only did he mislead us by stating he was a new employee, he also made my bf go to the bank to take out cash and he suffered international and national cash withdrawal fees. Had Govinda correctly advertised their business on Happy Cow, in stating that they did not accept CC, my boyfriend and I would have never ordered food from there. The food was subpar and expensive. My boyfriend and I left hungry and with bad tastes in our mouths. The lack of customer service at Govinda’s was immense. Try to stay away if you can. You will not get what you pay for and will leave disappointed like we did. I would give Govinda’s zero stars if I could.
Pros: Vegan Options
Cons: Expensive. Long Wait in Empty Restaurant., Lack of Customer Service. Misleading , Bland Food. Mediocre. Dirty atmosphere.

Incredibly slow service, overpriced, food okay - Edit
We waited over one hour to get our starter (nachos with guacamole), although there was only one other table with guests as we arrived. The food is okay, but not very flavourful, portions are decent. The prices are very high, main courses are 35 - 45 soles. They also add a 10% charge for service, although it isn't mentioned on the menu or anywhere else and the service is very poor. Wouldn't come back.

It was a very warm experience! The chef offer many alternatives. Everything was Fresh and make with love. It wasnt expensive for what it was. In other restaurant they offer just salad or the option of taking out the meet and cheese but the price remains the same.

When I saw the vegan sign I was overjoyed. It’s on the second level so I looked out onto the street and mountain. I had their hot ginger drink with lemon and the subji Govinda dish, both were delicious and good flavor. They were very nice. I am going back for sure.

Life saver - Edit
It's more like a vegan place with vegetarian options than the other way around. It's got a great variety of dishes, the owner is very friendly and the food looks and tastes homemade. Maybe it won't be the best vegan food you'll have in Peru, but definitely looks like the only place in Machu Picchu where you can eat vegan with no worries and no questioning about whether or not there will be eggs in the pasta or milk in the sauce.

Aguas Calientes - Edit
We went in around 830. We ordered one of the entrées with rice and vegetables. We asked for no cheese and were able to tell them how spicy we wanted it. It did take a little bit for the food to arrive, but it was delicious!
Read moreWe just came into Aguas Calientes from Quellomayo so we were attacked by sand flies, the woman running the restaurant that night gave us a clove of garlic to help. She was super friendly and the food was good. I'd definitely suggest coming here for a vegan dinner.
