Great extra addition - Edit
There's a reasonable selection of vegan food and the hotpot comes especially recommended. The staff are very flexible with requests. It looks a little clinical from outside but is cosy once you're in. Vegan cake choices can be limited to 1-2 and that may well include flapjack. There's almond milk available in place of the usual Soya.

Disappointing - Edit
I had planned to try out this cafe for weeks before they were actually open (I am always in Lancaster at the same time, on the same day, weekly). I had the salad platter and it was really disappointing. Very bland, I make better food myself at home on a daily basis. I paid up and left without cake because I didn’t want to spend any more money there.

Vegetarian cafe, ok for a dinner (lunch) break - Edit
Stopped here for a quick dinner (lunch). Great central location.
Read moreMost things on the menu were vegan. I opted for the cauliflower, pea and coconut curry special which came with brown rice. It came with (optional) mango chutney. To be honest if it wasn’t for the mango chutney it would have been too bland, I got extra mango chutney for no extra cost. It was £5.50 for a small bowl.
The vegan chocolate orange cake (£2.85) was tasty but slightly dry. Could’ve eaten a bigger portion! (I went to Whale Tail round the corner recently who are more generous with their portions so maybe that raised expectations.) There was another vegan cake option plus a vegetarian one. I also got a peppermint tea £1.95.
The staff were welcoming and informed me about their specials which are updated on their Facebook page.
They have boards mounted on the wall which list their menus both breakfast and dinner, plus their drinks. Prices are clearly marked, many gluten free options too plus different sizes. There was a decent amount of choice. I notice they charge 15p extra for soya milk which isn’t cool.
Pros: Many vegan options , Great central location , Nice staff
Cons: Not fully vegan , Extra charge for soya milk

Okay Lunch - Edit
Came to Lancaster for a day trip and we've already been to the Whale Tail so decided to try Roots, which is just around the corner. The inside of the cafe feels a little soul-less but it's still welcoming.
Read moreMost of the stuff on the menu is vegan and they have a special too.
I got the vegan bean burger which came with salad, vegan coleslaw and crisps. The burger tasted good but completely fell apart. It also cost £8.95 which seemed quite pricey for what you get, probably worth more around £7.
My mum wanted the Roots Platter but they had run out of mushroom pate, which was very disappointing. She got the special of the day which was a butternut squash and butter bean casserole, although she had to ask for it to come with bread, which didn't come on a separate plate. She said her casserole didn't taste very exciting.
There were 3 cakes and 2 cookies available, and all of them were vegan except for 1 of the cakes. I got a vegan chocolate and orange cake which was actually delicious, one of the best vegan cakes I've ever had. That cost £2.85 which was reasonable.
Overall it was an okay experience but we probably wouldn't choose to come again.
Pros: Lots of vegan options, Amazing cake
Cons: Not the greatest decor , Bit pricey, Food not that exciting

Good vegan options - Edit
Nice little cafe in the city centre. Good access and dog friendly. A few vegan cakes on offer, I opted for the carrot cake which was moist but would've benefitted from some frosting/topping. Good vegan options on the menu. Staff really friendly and helpful.

Excellent cakes - Edit
My boyfriend and I stopped here for brunch, ended up having an early lunch and cake!
Read moreThere was a good range for vegans, not all that much gluten free (&vegan) food, but I had a tasty salad and he enjoyed his burger.
The cakes were the real star of the show: a lovely moist gf carrot cake and he really loved the peanut butter cake (I would love to get the recipe, it looked incredible!).
Pros: great cakes, good vegan range , Nice staff
Cons: could do with more gluten free vegan options, more breafast options would be good

Reasonable prices, tasty food and friendly staff - Edit
I've been meaning to visit Roots for a while now and finally went in for lunch yesterday with my partner and mum. We all choose different options (chilli and nachos, vegan moussaka, sun dried tomato linguine) and all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Needless to say we'll definitely be in for another visit soon!

What A Find - Delicious Vegan Options - Edit
On a trip to Morecambe, I decided to stop off in Lancaster on the way, after I found Roots Vegetarian Cafe, whilst looking for places to stop for a coffee and cake. Roots is bright, airy and modern inside, with a lovely relaxed feel to the place and an open kitchen, which I really like. The menu includes breakfast and lunch choices, with vegan and gluten free options, as well as takeaway and a specials board.
Read moreI had an Americano coffee and a piece of vegan, gluten free carrot cake, it was absolutely delicious, so moist, yet so light, I could do with the recipe it was that good.
I had a quick chat with owner Dawn, a very friendly lady, who was busy preparing that day's lunchtime salads and soups, so everything is made fresh on site. I will definitely return, as I would like to try some of the other vegan options. Highly recommended.
Pros: Vegan Options, Delicious Cakes, Great atmosphere

Nice place to relax, eat lunch & have tea - Edit
A very friendly place, nice to chill out. The daily changing menu of soups, lunch & cakes is written on the board, so choices are limited but everyone in our group found something they were happy with. The food tasted nice, though a bit bland for me. The cakes were delicious!! Good selection of teas, too. I also liked that you can choose between small or large size plate, to suit your appetite and budget.
