So close to vegan - Edit
Why!?! This place has so much potential if they just got rid of the dairy=veal. The food is above average and the place has some fun local art on the walls.
Read morePros: Willing to convert dishes to vegan, Food was goodish, Loved the local art
Cons: Sells dairy=veal, Don’t think the chef has tried Mexican food

Way better than it used to be - Edit
We've been vegan for a long time and for years The Sprout was the only game in town for vegetarian restaurants. The problem with the Sprout was the lack of consistency. Sometimes the food was good, other times it wasn't. Sometimes the staff were kind, efficient, and helpful and other times the service was dreadful.
Read moreThey have since changed to a take-out restaurant with an eat-in option where you order at the counter and take your food to your seat when the food is ready. They've also introduced the Poyo taco menu to their regular menu (Poyo used to only be available late at night weekends). The tacos are amazing. I'm not a big TVP fan so I always get the tacos with black beans. They are delicious. The service is also better. We avoided the Sprout for a long time but have since become regulars again. The food (specifically, the taco selections) are fantastic and the staff they've hired are a lot better and friendlier. Be aware that they no longer take credit cards. It's debit or cash only (and I think that during their late night service it's cash only).
Pros: delicious tacos, lots of soy free options, some things are vegetarian and not vegan
Cons: no more table service, cash only

Nice little cafe, nothing spectacular - Edit
I ate a supper meal here and it was okay. Per reviews, I ordered the Pad Thai and found it was nothing special if you are used to eating Thai food from real Thai restaurants. My mom got the chickpea Curry which was sweet but very good. We also had a vegetable plate starter and were overcharged for it. I would probably visit again, but would definitely check out other spots in St. John's before coming back.

Cons: Slow service, accidentally overcharged us

Amazing spot - Edit
Vegan or not people will love this place! My husband had "the best Pad Thai he's ever had in his life!" We went for supper and back for lunch the next day and plan on going again for supper tonight. We have tried the Poutine with a twist, the black bean burger, the pad Thai and the taco salad. All delicious! They also carry vegan desserts from Tulip Baroo. All of those are also amazing! The dark chocolate brownie was particularly delicious!

Good healthy food - Edit
The Sprout is a vegetarian restaurant offering several vegan options (a little bit limited for the brunch but sufficient otherwise). I ate there twice, one for lunch and one for the brunch. For lunch, I chose the poutine with fried tofu. It consisted of rice, potatoes and a good sauce. The portion was nice and it was tasty. For brunch, I had a dish with mushrooms and tofu with toasts. There was only one or two vegan options but they were good. Prices are fair and the staff is friendly. The food is made daily with good produce, making it sometimes long to have your dishes. I also enjoyed the place that is peaceful and pleasant, even if it can be crowded.

Great Little Place - Edit
I am vegan and my wife is vegan/gf. This is a little piece of heaven for people worried about eating out and having your dietary requirements met. We couldn't decide on what to have for dessert so we bought it all! Highly recommended.

amazing place - Edit
I ate here on my recent trip to Saint John's and was truly impressed. I was surprised to find a vegetarian restaurant of such quality nestled in the heart of a small centuries old fishing town. I had the veggie delight I think, which was a relatively simple dish comprised of roasted potatoes, mushroom gravy, and beet and carrot strings. I added baby spinach to it as well for a small additional charge. It was fantastic, and hardy enough to sate me after a couple of hours of hiking around the coast. This place is not completely vegan, but it does clearly label its vegan options with a heart which makes them easy to identify and limits questions to a minimum. The price for most entrees is around 10 Canadian, which isn't bad for quality veg food, but isn't necessarily cheap either, not for me anyway. The interior seemed nice and cozy but we opted for the outdoor seating because it was such a beautiful today. The patio is a bit small so you might have to wait for a table to open up, but in my opinion it is definitely worth it. The staff was friendly and helpful, but sometimes the service seems to lag a little bit. This is more of an observation than a criticism; overall I had a fantastic experience. I was with my girlfriend's family most of the time, all locals and none of which are vegetarian or vegan and they love the food there. This isn't just a must visit for vegetarians and vegans, it's a must for anyone visiting Saint John's.

awsome food - Edit
I recently visited Newfoundland and thank goodness for "The Sprout." It is truly an oasis in a province of deep fried everything !. Outside of St John's there is nothing to eat for a vegan.Thank goodness for the the suitcase of food i took with me.You will not find fruit or veg and heaven forbid a grain or tofu .
Read moreI went to the sprout 2 and took the black bean burrito $7.75 and the "Olive it" a sandwich of sundried tomato and olive tapanade for the plane ride home.$6.25.
I was only in St John's for 2 days . The day I arrived and the day I left and it was the only hot meal I had in a week.
The black bean chili was sooo tasty, the miso soup was full of chunky veg and delicious .The noodle bowl was yummy and so was the pad thai . My husband had the chickpea curry and he was pleasantly surprised . I do not like coconut so I did not try it.
It was a delightful place to eat.The staff were friendly and helpful .
A MUST VISIT .
Pros: excellent food, healthy, big portions
Cons: none, none, none

A welcome spot in a beautiful city with few vegetarian options.
Read moreGreat location, friendly service, delicious food.
Fills up fast but take away (with returnable containers) an option.
Recommend highly and not just because it is the only vegetarian restaurant in the City -- my omnivorous family members love it too.
Pros: Well located for walking

great! - Edit
i visited this place right before having to leave. Its great! I had the miso soup right there and ordered a Bravocado sandwich (for my plane ride) and the pad thai for breakfast the next morning. The sandwich was really good and filling, the pad thai had a ton of flavors going all at once. The people that helped us were awesome, very friendly just like everyone in newfoundland, hopefully there's another fish conference there so i can go back, i only wish i could have gone a few more times while i was there :(
