not a fan - Edit
I went for their pre-opening event. I won't be back. It was too greasy... and I love grease. The fake fish tasted like the fried sausage. I didn't love it.

Lived up to expectations - Edit
We'd been waiting to go to this place since it opened but hadn't been to the city since it opened and we had high hopes. It's fully vegan and about 75% gluten-free, which is something London vegan chippys fail on (for me at least). I had the salt and pepper squid to start, which I would guess was made of a type of mushroom and had a great 'squidy' texture and really tasty. I also shared a banana blossom and chips and tofish and chips. Both were great, but the banana blossom fish had an amazingly fish-like texture and great flavour. Homemade tartare sauce also very nice. Really friendly people working there and we would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Some things are sensational, others are just ok. - Edit
The southern-fried cauliflower is to die for!!! Great chips and onion rings. The other meat alternatives and Chinese options are good but not amazing. I respect the effort and emphasis here, and hope it will improve under new ownership.
Read morePros: Wide selection, Southern-fried couliflower!!!, Attempt at 'healthy' junk food.
Cons: No delivery, Some options aren't great., They proclaim to be 100% organic but deffo not.

Sadly not great - Edit
Great idea but we had tofu and chips and it was just so oily and also had a chicken burger and it was a strange chewy texture and the salad inside seemed strage, sorry to leave a bad review im just being honest- maybe just an off day for them as lots of good reviews

Okay... - Edit
Not amazing, just average. I have visited around four times, never being too impressed. However I do think it’s fantastic to have an all vegan fast food place like this so local, influencing others and promoting the vegan message.
Read morePros: Organic ingredients., Purely vegan - no cross contamination., Mimics classic ‘takeaway’ options.

Some things could be improved... - Edit
So me and my friends went here last night (I’m the vegan) and we had quite a mix of stuff. By the sounds of it, all the Chinese type foods were really really good. So that gets a 4 star.
Read moreHowever, I went for the legendary tofish and it was alright, I’ve had better tofish before. I had a pea fritter with it and that was not alright. I was hoping for some lush greens in there but I don’t think you could describe it as green inside, bit tasteless too.
Maybe we just got unlucky? But I’d been looking forward to it and was not impressed. Maybe I’ll return for a Chinese though. And update my review.
Pros: A lot of options, Chinese food looked good, Friendly staff
Cons: Not enough vegetables - generally, Some food was not good

Planning my next vist - Edit
I've always been a fan of fast food, despite myself. Thus, the genius combo of a Chinese Chippy has always brought me great joy. So imagine my joy at finding this, a vegan Chinese Chipppy. The future is here and I love it! The Chippy food is comforting and generously portioned, the sauces home-made and frankly delicious. And the Chinese-style selection really packs a punch, without leaving you wondering if you'll be phoning in sick the following day. Great flavour, great selection and a lovely vibe. I'll be back for more, mark my words.

Best Takeaway EVER! - Edit
Seriously epic. We had one portion of tofu fish and chips which was so delicious- tasted fishy without it being too strong and not too rich. Also had a mushroom curry and brown rice which was Incredible- so many flavours! Also really reasonably priced and great service. An absolute must try!

So lucky to have this awesome place in Bristol! - Edit
Love the variety of options at this place, proper food chips, vegan take on the usual chip shop offerings but also with amazing home made sauces, fermented pickles, veggies and some seriously good stir fry - try the sweet and sour crispy tofu! Only thing is I didn’t like the banana blossom fish - I would personally avoid that.

Good attempt but too greasy and lacking some flavour - Edit
We had heard great reviews so we're really excited and ordered a lot of food. The chips, curry sauce, cheeken and chilli 'squid' were really nice, but the battered foods (fish, battered pea fritter and onion rings) had far too much batter and oil and not really any other flavours. For example the fish only had a very small piece of nori so it was mainly just flavourless tofu and batter. We ended up using lots of tartar sauce and chilli mayo to try and make them a bit less sickly, but it just didn't quite hit the mark unfortunately. It is great something like this is available though and everything was really reasonably priced.

Chip shop classics that don’t quite hit the mark - Edit
Good attempt at recreating chip shop classics. Fast food fanatics may enjoy, but we found the heavily battered options we tried to be overly greasy, and in need of the accompanying sauces to have any flavour.

Great vegan fast food - Edit
Just took a slight detour whilst visiting Bristol to check this place out and so glad I did. Was naturally drawn to the tofish and chips, but there was so much else on the menu I'd like to have tried. So nice to go to a chippy, and not only not bother about what the chips are fried in/with, but to know you have something to go with it. Delicious crunchy batter round tofu + sheet of nori, with perfect chips all for £5. Friendly staff too. Think I may need to make more detours in future and sample the whole menu. This place is a real treasure.

Incredible niche - Edit
I would never have believed that an all vegan fish and chip shop miles from the centre of Bristol could have survived. How wrong I was. This place provides food like no other. True hearty food, that might not be super good for you, but tastes great and is cruelty free. Top tip: try the battered sausage!

Delicious vegan tofish - Edit
I’ve had takeaway from here about five times and usually get tofish and chips, which are delicious! Although the portion of chips isn’t quite as big as you’d get from a regular chippy, there is still plenty there for a filling meal and the potatoes are organic. Everything is cooked perfectly, and worth every penny!

A Must Eat - Edit
This place is amazing. If you love some takeaway and junk food on occasion then you'll love it here. Having never had fish from a traditional shop, I was desperate to try the tofish and chips here. It's reasonably priced, the curry sauce was delicious and all my vegan chip shop dreams are alive. They also sell battered sausage, stir fries and fried chicken if you're after that, but I was far too excited about the tofish. It was rather busy (though it is a chip shop on a friday night), but the staff were lovely and attentive and service was quick. My only regret is not getting the tartar sauce.

Absolutely worth a massive detour for! - Edit
Had read about this place online and was driving past Bristol so decided to call in; so glad I did. Super friendly helpful staff and oh so much choice. As a gluten free vegan, I'm just not used to having practically a whole menu to peruse; I possibly did a little dance of joy! The tofish was great and the homemade tartare sauce wow! It sounds silly but the chips tasted clean- totally yummy and naughty but- clean! Over excited clearly as words are failing me!

Ridiculously good vegan chippy. - Edit
Been here a whole load of times since it opened. The owner is a really lovely guy, the food is absolutely amazing and I couldn't recommend it enough.
Read moreHave had the to-fish and chips which is banging but the sausage in batter is my favourite. Chips are proper chippy chips too.
Have taken a number of omnis for dinner there and they've given the chips, tofish, sausage in batter, stir-frys and curry sauce amazingly positive reviews to me.
Stop reading this and go and eat at Matter! You'll love it!
Pros: Delicious proper chippy chips, Super friendly service, Not stupidly expensive

Yum - amazing vegan chippy! - Edit
I love this place - every time I've had takeaway from here it's been amazing. The chips are proper chip-shop chips, the tofish and battered sausages are great, and the Chinese style dishes are amazing - I recently had the chilli to-beef and I think it's probably going to be an all-time favourite of mine. It was amazing!
